二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The tons of plastic we’re dumping in the oceans is finding a new home—the stomachs of our beautiful marine animals. Yet another reminder of this fact washed ashore in Eastern Indonesia this week. A large amount of waste, including drinking cups and flip-flops, was found in the stomach of a whale that died off the coast near Kapota Island.

The 9.5-metre sperm whale (抹香鲸) was found by rescuers from the Wakatobi National Park. The whale had swallowed 5.9 kilograms of plastic waste containing 115 plastic cups, four plastic bottles, 25 plastic bags, and more than 1,000 other kinds of pieces of plastic, park chief Heri Santoso told the reporter.

“Although we have not been able to  deduce the cause of death, the facts that we see are truly awful,” said Dwi Suprapti, a marine species conservation co-ordinator at WWF Indonesia. She said it was not possible to determine if the plastic had caused the whale’s death because of the animal’s advanced state of decay (腐烂). But this is only the latest.

Four Asian nations—Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand—account for 50% of the plastic waste in the oceans, according to a report by environmental campaigner Ocean Conservancy and the McKinsey Center for Business and Environment. The Philippines is second to Indonesia when it comes to putting away plastic waste in the oceans, according to a study published in the journal Science in January. Of the 3.2 million mismanaged waste it produces every year, 1.29 million ends up in the ocean.

A report released earlier this year stated that the amount of plastic in the ocean is likely to increase.

1What can we know about the sperm whale?

    A. Its stomach is the home of plastic waste.

    B. It died of swallowing lots of plastic waste.

    C. It was the first whale to eat plastic waste.

    D. It had eaten much plastic waste before its death.

2Which can best replace the underlined word “deduce” in paragraph 3?

    A. confirm B. cause

    C. approve D. contain

3Which country dumps the most plastic waste into the oceans?

    A. Thailand B. Indonesia

    C. Vietnam D. Philippines

4What’s the main idea of the passage?

    A. Philippines puts away 1.29 million tons of plastic.

    B. A sperm whale was found dead near Kapota Island.

    C. Much dumped plastic waste was found in a dead whale.

    D. We should take measures to reduce the waste in whales.

  • 22、   'How lucky you are to be a doctor...' Anyone who's a doctor is right out of luck, I thought. Anyone who's studying medicine should have his head examined.

You may think I want to change my job. Well, at the moment I do. As one of my friends says—even doctors have a few friends——it's all experience. Experience! I don't need such experience. I need a warm, comfortable, undisturbed bed all my own. I need it badly. I need all telephones to be thrown down the nearest well, that's what I need.

All these thoughts fly round my head as I drive my Mini through the foggy streets of East London at 3:45 a.m. on a December morning. I am a ministering angel(救死扶伤的天使)in a Mini with a heavy coat and a bag of medicines. As I speed down Lea Bridge in the dark at this horrible morning hour, the heater first blowing hot then cold, my back aching from the car-seat, I do not feel like a ministering angel I wish I were on the beach in southern France. Call me a bad doctor if you like. Call me what you will. But don't call me at half past three on a December morning for an ear-ache that you have had for two weeks.

Of course, being a doctor isn't really all bad. We do have our moments. Once in a while people are ill, once in a while you can help, once in a while you get given a cup of tea and rock-hard cake at two o'clock in the morning- then you worry if you have done everything. But all too often 'everything? is a repetitious(重复的)rule: look, listen, feel, tap. Pills, infection(注射),phone, ambulance(救护车),away to the next.

And then there is always the cool, warm voice of the girl on the switchboard of the emergency bed service who will get your patient into hospital for you—the pleasant voice that comes to you as you stand in the cold, dark, smelly, dirty telephone box somewhere in a dangerous section of town. Oh, it has its moments, this life does.

A.we doctors are called at a moment's notice to see people who need medical treatment

B.usually we are glad that we can do something to help the sick

C.sometimes we find people are thankful for our help

D.there are chances that doctors find their work rewarding and satisfying

A.is a bad doctor, unwilling to make a house call during the night-time

D.thinks a doctor can enjoy certain special rights whether he felt lucky or not

【5】How does the writer show the doctors work is very tiring and hard?

C.By comparing the job of being a doctor with other jobs.

D.By drawing a conclusion that being a doctor is unwise.

  • 23、   To anyone else, it was just a simple white cotton bag, but to me, it was a canvas(油画布) for my latest masterpiece. I laid it flat on the six-foot-long wooden table in my kitchen. With one hand I held down a corner of the bag and with the other I dipped my brush in the paint and touched it to the canvas; slowly an image took shape, waves crashing on a sandy beach, seagulls flying above, fishing for a meal. I put down my brush and rubbed my neck. It was hard work, but I enjoyed it.

And my friends and family loved the bags. "I get tons of praise for mine," my mother-in-law told me. "People are always asking where they can buy one." Those weren't quite the honor I'd dreamed of when I first picked up a paintbrush as a kid. I used to aim higher. I wanted my work to appear in the Louvre Museum in Paris, right next to the Mona Lisa. But even then, I knew what a wild dream it was.

My parents encouraged my interest, and paid for art lessons. In high school, I joined an art club and showed my work along with other local artists in an exhibition. I started college, majored in fine art and took classes in drawing and design. But the farthest I ever traveled was New York City. The Louvre might as well have been on another planet.

Then things changed. I met and fell in love with Charlie. After we got married, I took a break from art. Making a home together was more important. Art supplies didn't fit into our budget.

When I finally picked up a brush again, I was rusty. I tried a landscape but it was flat. Things in the foreground were the same size as in the background. I'd lost the ability. I threw down my brush in frustration. Maybe I'd never really had any talent at all. Forget the Louvre, my work wasn't good enough to hang in our living room. Charlie turned me around. "You have a talent,"  he told me. "Keep painting." He helped me find room in our budget for paints and brushes. One day, walking through town, I spotted some giant white shells in a store window. What an interesting canvas they could be! I bought a few and began painting them. In Savannah, there was no shortage of inspiration. Charlie took some of my pieces into the electric company where he worked. He came home with the proudest smile. "They want to order them for their wives." he told me.

Lately I'd been painting these bags. It wasn't a money-making project—I barely covered the cost of materials. But seeing others appreciate my art made me feel good. This one, the beach scene, was going to a friend of my mother-in-law's. When it dried, I brought it over to my mother-in-law. "I just know my friend will love it," she said.

Several months later my mother-in-law's friend called me. I'd moved on to other projects and I'd nearly forgotten what I'd made for her, "I went to Paris," she said. “And I brought your bag with me. I have to tell you about the Louvre," she continued. "For two hours, we wandered the museum. Delacroix, Michelangelo, the Venus de Milo, there was so much to see, and of course, the Mona Lisa. But every few minutes, somebody stopped me.' Where did you get that bag? ' they asked. Some folks thought I'd bought it in the gift shop there! I had to tell them it was a Cindy Barnwell original.

Today I'm painting an 11- by-14-inch canvas of bunnies picking flowers, to go in a friend's baby nursery. It may not be a da Vinci, but that doesn't matter. This world was made for artists. I'm convinced of that. And my gift is to share that beauty, any way I can.

  • 24、In August, Jason M. Allen’s piece “Theatre D’opéra Spatial” — which he created with Al image generator Midjourney — won first place in the emerging artist division’s “digital arts photography” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. The definition for the category states that digital art refers to works that use “digital technology as part of the creative process”.

Allen’s award-winning image has led to debates about what, exactly, it means to be an artist and whether AI can truly make art. “It felt bad for the exact same reason we don’t let robots participate in the Olympics,” one Twitter user wrote. “This is the literal definition of ‘pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece’,” another tweeted.

Yet while Allen didn’t use a paintbrush, there was plenty of work involved, he said. First, he played around with phrasing that led Midjourney to generate images of women in elegant dresses and space helmets, in an attempt to mix Victorian-style costuming with space themes. Over time, with many slight changes to his written prompt (提示符), he created 900 different versions of what led to his final image. Then he improved its resolution through Gigapixel AI and finally had the images printed.

Allen is glad the debate over whether AI can be used to make art is attracting so much attention. “Rather than hating on the technology, we need to recognize that it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward,” Allen said.

Cal Duran, one of the judges for the competition, said that while Allen’s piece included a mention of AI, he didn’t realize that when judging it. Still, he sticks by his decision to award it first place. “I think the AI technology may give more opportunities to people who may not find themselves artists in the conventional way,” he said.

【1】Why has Jason’s work led to debates?

    A.It was a copy of a photograph.

    B.He challenged the older artists.

C.It was created with the help of AI.

D.He broke the rule of the competition.

【2】What can best describe Allen’s creating process?

    A.Cooperative.

    B.Energy-consuming.

    C.Straightforward.

    D.Imagination-lacking.

【3】What can we learn about AI from the last paragraph?

    A.It is a double-edged sword.

    B.It attracts conventional artists.

C.It strikes art judges as no surprise.

D.It may open a new world to artists.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.A trend to be AI artists.

    B.An AI-generated art contest.

C.Responses to a winning AI artwork.

    D.Curiosity about an image generator.
