二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The new president of Harvard University is the son of an Eastern European refugee and Auschwitz (奥斯威辛) survivor — Lawrence S. Bacow. His father worked full time while attending a state college in Detroit at night to earn his degree.

Bacow, the former president of Tufts University, has taken over Harvard at a time when higher education is under attack for being financially out of reach to many Americans. But Bacow said his family’s journey had reflected the power of college education to transform generations and the opportunities that have historically been available in the United States.

“My parents came to this country with almost nothing,” Bacow said. “I wouldn’t be here if this country had not been open to people like my parents at that time. Nor would I if my father hadn’t had the opportunity to get the college education.”

Bacow grew up in Pontiac, Michigan. His father’s family fled anti-Jewish (反犹太的) violence in Minsk, then part of the Soviet Union, before the start of World War II and went to the United States. His mother arrived in Brooklyn at age 19, having survived Auschwitz concentration camp. She was the only Jew from her town to have survived the war. Yet Bacow, who is married with two sons, said that while growing up in Michigan, he had a happy childhood, entering science fairs as a child and building radios like his dad.

Bacow has spent most of his professional career at MIT, Harvard and Tufts. He was a professor of environmental studies at MIT, and later a principal at the university. He led Tufts from 2001 to 2011. At Tufts, Bacow earned a reputation for shaking up a sleepy university that was being overshadowed by its peers in Boston. He is also credited with leading it through both 9/11 and the 2008 financial crisis.

As the Tufts president, Bacow traveled around the country, reaching out to alumni (校友), and he urged his faculty and deans to do the same, in an effort to boost donations to finance Tufts’ academic ambitions. He raised more than $20 million for faculty recruitment, attracting up-and-coming professors by offering junior faculty perks (福利), such as long academic leaves that they couldn’t get elsewhere.

Under Bacow’s leadership, Tufts spent millions on labs and libraries. He also made addresses nationally about the need to make higher education more accessible and affordable to low-income students.

1The reason why Bacow appreciates college education is that   .

    A. college education is out of reach to many Americans

    B. his family changed their fate due to college education

    C. few opportunities were available when his father came into the country

    D. a college degree helped his mother survive Auschwitz

2What can we infer from the passage?

    A. The fellow townspeople of Bacow were all killed besides his mother.

    B. Bacow’s mother stimulated his interest in science.

    C. Bacow’s father was good at working with electronics.

    D. Bacow’s father came to the U.S. after World War II broke out.

3The underlined word “shaking up” in paragraph 5 probably means   .

    A. reactivating B. causing C. damaging D. taking over

4What is this passage mainly about?

    A. How to be admitted to Harvard University. B. The history of Bacow’s family.

    C. The art of Bacow’s leadership in Tufts. D. Bacow’s way to individual success.

  • 22、Dogs need regular exercise to stay healthy and to stop them from getting bored. But the amount of time dogs need outdoors varies based on their age, size and breed.

    Based on their age

While puppies are often bundles of energy, it is important not to over-exercise young dogs. A good rule of thumb for puppies is that they should enjoy five minutes of a movement twice a day per month of their age; so, for example, if your puppy is 12 weeks old, keep walks or play sessions to around 15 minutes each.

Elderly dogs may struggle to take long walks, but should still be given the opportunity to go outside and move around at their own pace at least twice daily.

    Based on their size

All dogs should be let outside for exercise twice a day, but how intense that exercise should be depends, partly, on the size of the dog. Larger breeds need more space to wander around so, in addition to regular play in the house or garden.

Smaller dogs often require less space of a workout, so letting them out for a runaround, in addition to their daily walk, can be an appropriate form of exercise.

    Based on their breed

Some breeds, such as border collies, springer spaniels, German shepherds and Siberian huskies, have been bred as “working dogs”, so are suited to covering long distances. Dogs such as labradors and poodles have bundles of energy, so they are also great companions for a long walk.

Brachycephalic breeds, such as pugs or bulldogs, are more likely to struggle with intense exercise. For these breeds, two shorter walks each day may be the best option; make sure to incorporate some rest breaks, and plenty of drinking opportunities, too.

【1】How long exercise is suitable for a 4-month-old puppy?

    A.10 minutes.

    B.15 minutes.

    C.20 minutes.

    D.25 minutes.

【2】What might be the major concern in terms of the dogs of different sizes?

    A.Location.

    B.Time.

    C.Space.

    D.Frequency.

【3】Which of the following breeds is suited to workouts of low intensity?

    A.Labradors.

    B.Bulldogs.

    C.German shepherds.

    D.Siberian huskies.

  • 23、   Some people say that dogs are human’s best friend-good companions, loyal and lovable. Of course, they can be more than just a pet as some are excellent working dogs. More recently, a new role has been found for the animals-working as therapy dogs in universities.

Research, conducted by Washington State University, has found that spending time with dogs can help stressed-out students. Patricia Pendry from the university said that a study of 300 undergraduates had found weekly hour-long sessions with dogs brought to the university by professional handlers (训狗师) had made stressed students who were at “high risk of academic failure” or dropping out, “feel relaxed and accepted”. The dogs helped them to concentrate, learn and remember information.

Other research has shown that petting animals like dogs can reduce stress hormone levels and anxiety. Around 1,000 campuses in the US already use therapy pets and it’s becoming more common in the UK. For example, The University of Middlesex has employed some dogs to help stop lonely students dropping out. Fiona Suthers, head of clinical skills at the university, says that five Labradors had a “stringent assessment” to ensure they had the right temperament (性情). But she adds, “It’s hard to describe the impact of just having a dog lying down in the corner of a class.”

Using dogs for therapy can also help the dogs themselves. In Wales, Swansea University Students’ Union has used rescued Greyhounds to help students unwind between exams. Sessions allow mistreated and abandoned dogs to interact with humans and begin to trust them again. Student Union education officer Chloe Hutchinson said, “A lot of students have dogs at home and might be a bit homesick, especially around exam time when it is stressful and you just want your home comforts.”

So if you’re a student who’s been working like a dog, but you still feel like you haven’t a dog’s chance in passing your exams, maybe introducing a four-legged friend into your life might be the help you need.

1What can we learn about therapy dogs in universities?

    A.They can reduce students’ anxiety.

    B.They can help blind students.

    C.They can work with students.

    D.They can keep students safe.

    2What does Fiona Suthers imply?

A.Dogs play a part in class in universities.

B.The right temperament is needed for a therapy dog.

C.The impact of therapy dogs is clear.

D.It’s hard to describe how dogs will help with the students.

3How do the abandoned dogs themselves get help?

A.By finding a new family to live in.

B.By helping students with some exams.

C.By lying down to the ground in a room.

D.By making more chances to meet humans.

4What is the best title for the text?

    A.Dogs helping stressed-out students

    B.College students are stressed out

    C.Why dogs are perfect helpers

D.How to keep a therapy dog

  • 24、On May 1, 1926, Ford Motor Company became one of the first American companies to adopt a five-day, 40-hour week. It was something workers and labor unions had been calling for. However, the five-day workweek was to increase productivity. With more time and money, workers were expected to buy and use the products they were making. Manufacturers soon followed Ford’s lead, and the Monday-to-Friday workweek became standard practice.

Since then, everything has changed but the hours. Many people worked longer, which severely influenced health and well-being, as well as the environment. Until the Second World War, it was common for one person in a family, usually the oldest male, to work full-time. Women gradually made up 42 percent of the world’s full-time workforce. Later, technology made lots of work unnecessary, with computers and robots doing many tasks previously performed by humans.

Well into the 21st century, we continue to work the same long hours as 20th century laborers, using up more of Earth’s supply to produce more goods that we must keep working to buy, use and replace in a seemingly endless cycle of hard work and consumption. It’s time to pause and consider better ways to live like shifting from fossil-fueled lifestyles with which our consumer-based workweeks are connected.

The UK New Economics Foundation argues that a standard 21-hour workweek would address a number of interconnected problems: overwork, unemployment, over-consumption, high carbon emissions, low well-being, and the lack of time to live sustainably, to care for each other, and simply to enjoy life. Economic systems that require constant growth on a finite (有限的) planet make no sense. It’s time for a change in our economic thinking.

【1】Why did Henry Ford shorten the workweek?

    A.To increase efficiency.

    B.To cut workers’ salaries.

    C.To end conflicts with workers.

    D.To create more job opportunities.

【2】What happened in the workforce after World War II?

A.The oldest male had to work longer.

B.Technology let people work more flexibly.

C.Job positions were created due to technology.

D.Full-time vacancies were filled by more women.

【3】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

A.Companies shouldn’t produce more than people can use.

B.The 21st century has witnessed the longest working hours.

C.The cycle of longer workweek and consumption should be changed.

D.Longer workweek definitely leads to stronger consumption capability.

【4】Which would be possible if a 21-hour workweek should be adopted?

    A.Companies would be closed down.

    B.Economic growth would be stopped.

    C.Economic systems would break down.

D.People would be encouraged to enjoy life.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Any Problem with New Job Titles?

CEO, marketing director, lead writer, sales associate… Employees’ roles have generally been defined with these straightforward terms. They communicate essential employee details such as job function and seniority and make sense to employees and employers alike. But now new titles are found in the changing world of work. Fancy but unclear labels like “chief visionary officer” or “business development guru” come into our view, making the traditional system seem rigid. Will there be problems?

In general, traditional job titles are clear and indicative of the employee’s seniority and responsibilities. For example, it’s largely accepted that assistants are below associates, who are below directors, who are below vice (副的) presidents, who are below CEOs. But these new job titles are meaningless outside an organization, at least in some people’s view. A recruiter (招聘人员) may not be able to identify the right candidates based on their previous working experience. Besides, having an extremely uncommon word in a title may give a job hunter difficulty in explaining his past job to future recruiters, according to Adrjan, director of an economic research. That means both employees and employers could suffer.

Yet, from another perspective, altered job titles can help make an employee feel more valued and better empowered in a company. “They massively boost your confidence,” says Hughes, who works as “head of hype and culture” at an advertising agency. “They put faith in your competence, creating an environment in which you can grow and develop.” And from the companies’ standpoint, they want to convey the message that they are trying to treat their staff in a more respectful way. For example, if they use “people” instead of “human resources” in a title, they signal that they value individuals as customers and partners rather than resources to exploit.
