21、 The team, led by Michael T. Tolley, a professor of mechanical engineering at the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego, details its findings in the Feb 17, 2021 issue of the journal Science Robotics.
“This work represents a fundamental yet significant step towards fully-autonomous, electronics-free walking robots,” said Dylan Drotman, a Ph. D. student in Tolley’s research group and the paper’s first author.
Applications include low-cost robots for entertainment, such as toys, and robots that can operate in environments where electronics cannot function, such as MRI machines. Soft robots are of particular interest because they easily adapt to their environment and operate safely near humans.
Most soft robots are powered by air and are controlled by electronic circuits. But this approach requires complex components like circuit boards, valves (阀门) and pumps -often outside the robot’s body. These components, which make up the robot’s brains and nervous system, are typically large and expensive. By contrast, the UC San Diego robot is controlled by a light-weight, low-cost system of air-powered circuits, made up of tubes and soft valves, onboard the robot itself. The robot can walk on command or in response to signals it senses from the environment.
“With our approach, you could make a very complex robotic brain,” said Tolley, the study’s senior author. “Our focus here was to make the simplest air-powered nervous system needed to control walking.”
In the future, researchers want to improve the robot’s ways to walk so it can walk on natural field and uneven surfaces. This would allow the robot to navigate over a variety of obstacles (障碍). This would require a more complicated network of sensors and as a result a more complex air-powered system. The team will also look at how the technology could be used to create robots, which are in part controlled by air-powered circuits for some functions, such as walking.

22、 I work at a company where there are lots of employees. I can’t say that I know them all by name, but I know my fair share of them. I think that almost all of them know me. It is all based on one simple principle: I believe that every single person deserves to be acknowledged, even though it is only a smile or a nod of the head.
When I was about ten years old, I was walking down the street with my mother. She stopped to speak to Mr. Lee. I was busy throwing stones at the stop sign. I knew I could see Mr. Lee any old time around the neighborhood, so I didn’t pay any attention to him. After we passed Mr. Lee, my mother stopped me and said something that has stuck with me from that day until now. She said, “You let that be the last time you ever walk by somebody and not open up your mouth to speak, because even a dog can wave its tail when it passes you on the street.” That phrase sounds simple, but it’s been a guidepost for me and the foundation of who I am.
At work, I always used to say hello to the founder of the company and ask him how our business was doing. But I also spoke to the people who cleaned the buildings and asked how their children were doing. I’ve become vice president, but that hasn’t changed the way I approach people. I still follow my mother’s advice. I speak to everyone I see, no matter where I am. You will realize how powerful it is just to open your mouth and say, “Hello.” I’ve learned that speaking to people creates a pathway into their world, and it lets them come into mine, too.
【1】Which of the following can replace the underlined word “acknowledged” in Paragraph 1?
A.Accepted. B.Thanked.
C.Greeted. D.Respected.
【2】Why did the author ignore Mr. Lee?
A.The author often met him. B.The author was too busy.
C.The author didn’t like him. D.The author didn’t know him.
【3】What did the author learn from his mother?
A.Everyone should be treated fairly. B.Speak to everyone you see.
C.Polite behavior is important in your life. D.Friends may disappear from your life any time.
【4】What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To show respect for his mother. B.To share how to succeed in work.
C.To show how to approach others. D.To share an important principle.
23、When people hear the news that David Bennett, recipient of the world’s first pig heart transplant, died on March 9, they might believe that the transplant was at fault. But in fact his transplant surgery represents a great step forward in medical history toward xenotransplantation (异种器官移植) success.
His death came just two months after the operation Jan 7. He was ineligible (不合格的) for the heart transplant list and xenotransplantation was, his only option. The fact that he was able to get two more months of life with the surgery proves its success.
Xenotransplantation has been a hot topic in medical research for decades, as doctors and scientists look for ways to solve the transplant waiting list crisis. In the US alone over-100,000 patients are on the transplant list waiting for new organs. Many of them will die before getting their chance to receive a heart or lung or kidney. Therefore, medical science has looked to animal organs as a viable (可行的) alternative.
Doctors have experimented with xenotransplantation since the early 20th century but it has not been widely successful for two main reasons. First, it is incredibly difficult for even human-to-human transplants to be successful due to organ rejection. It is much harder with animal organs. Second, xenotransplantation has been highly restricted due to feat of virus transmissions from primates or pigs. In the late 1990s, some countries placed strict guidelines or outright bans on the use of animal tissue and organs for people.
Aside from Bennett’s gene-edited pig heart, late last year doctors New York University achieved some success in attaching pig kidneys to human blood vessels outside the body in patients on life support. Meanwhile, at the University of Alabama, doctors managed to actually implant (移植) gene-edited pig kidneys into a patient on life support.
Though these recent successes have been short-lived, they show that there may be a way to help more people with gene-edited organs from pigs.
【1】What do we know about the surgery?
A.It was one of the best choices for the patient.
B.It stands for the advances made in xenotransplantation.
C.It was the first successful xenotransplantation in history.
D.Without it, the patient would have lived two months longer.
【2】Why do scientists experiment with xenotransplantation?
A.To help patients recover from organ failure.
B.To find a practical alternative to human organs.
C.To make animal organs more useful to humans.
D.To ease the shortage of human organs for transplant.
【3】What may be the main concern about xenotransplantation?
A.The risk of spreading diseases.
B.The problem of public rejection.
C.The effects on other organs and tissues.
D.The damage to patients’ immune systems.
【4】What’s the author’s attitude toward the prospect of using pig organs for transplants?
A.Positive.
B.Worried.
C.Doubtful.
D.Uncertain.
24、For most people, one of the hardest things to deal with is when someone they love is in emotional pain and they simply don’t know how to help. Actually, it can be a challenge to figure out what to say to your loved ones as they struggle with an emotional blow. But don’t worry too much. 【1】 You can try the following tips.
Focus on the person’s feelings. Don’t mention the time that you went through a similar experience and pulled through it. It won’t help most people. Instead, let them know that you are sad that they are sad. 【2】 Even if your friend just lost their grandma and you lost your grandma several years ago, everything can be different.
【3】 Make a compassionate(有同情心的) statement and then just sit quietly. Let your loved one talk if they want to. Or you can just give them a hug and let them relax, knowing you are there for them. Instead of offering statements that you think are comforting, stay silent and let them start a conversation if they want one.
Don’t add your opinion. Part of learning how to comfort someone is not to give advice. Even if you think you have the perfect solution to the problem, don’t offer it. Every single person is different. Your loved one has different weaknesses and strengths than you or another friend that has gone through the same thing. 【4】
Provide practical help. If you are concerned about how to comfort someone, you can just find some daily stuff to help your loved one. 【5】 Don’t be afraid to consistently offer the same type of help, such as bringing dinner the same night of every week.
A.Don’t focus on you.
B.Just listen and don’t talk.
C.Remember that no two experiences are the same.
D.They want to talk about what’s happening in the present.
E.Therefore, don’t offer advice unless your loved one asks.
F.This is a great way to show your friend that they can count on you.
G.Simply listening and focusing on your loved one can make a big difference.
