二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The most important life lesson I’ve learned from running is to run at my own pace. This lesson has guided me in many ways. In particular, it made me challenge the fixed expectations of retirement and aging.

Running is a metaphor (隐喻) for life. I realized this while training for a marathon to celebrate my 60th birthday. All the other runners being faster than me made me embarrassed, but my coach shared some valuable advice: run at your own best pace — setting a goal or target time could be a limitation. He was right. Over time I ran more easily and faster. I also enjoyed the experience much more.

I have applied this principle to other areas of my life. Finding a rhythm is not about efficiency or how many things I can get done in a day. It has more to do with what I decide to do at this stage in my life. Running carries its own set of expectations, including what people at certain life stage should be doing or not doing. Expectations at my age can center on how leisure time is spent, decisions about employment, and even the role of a grandparent.

I used to think it was young people who bore the impact of peer pressure, but older adults can experience it too. This is ironic, because often later in this life is a time when we tend to care less about the opinions of others.

I’m not suggesting we postpone dreams. Of course, we should do what matters to us, but it’s easy to view retirement as another occupation with benchmarks (基准) to be met. It’s a comparison trap that makes what someone else does the reference point.

Forget what others are doing. Their pace is not necessarily the pace you should run at. Run at your own way. Our bodies know what they need. Our hearts know what they need. In living life on our own terms, we will likely feel stronger in body, mind and spirit.

【1】What motivated the author to participate in marathon?

    A.Her eager interest in running.

    B.Her strong curiosity for marathon.

C.Her keen wish to celebrate her birthday.

D.Her urgent need to enhance her strength.

【2】What do the underlined words “this principle” in paragraph 3 probably refer to?

    A.Setting a target time.

    B.Finding your limitation.

    C.Challenging fixed idcas.

    D.Running at your own pace.

【3】How does the author feel about being retired?

    A.Nervous.

    B.Confused.

    C.Optimistic.

    D.Grateful.

【4】What can we know about the author?

A.She benefits from the coach’s words.

B.She used to be a professional runner.

C.She sees the value of a reference point.

D.She’s suffering a lot from peer pressure.

  • 22、   Here’s a new reason to be an optimist. 1 Pessimists, of course, might have suspected this all along-but now there’s actual research behind it.

Boston-area scientists found the most optimistic people live an average of 11 to 15 percent longer than their more pessimistic peers.

In previous studies, researchers have found that more optimistic people tend to have lower risk of diseases and early death, said Lewina Lee, the lead researcher and a psychiatry professor at Boston University School of Medicine. “2

Optimists generally expect good things to happen in the future and feel like they can control important outcomes. They tend to stay positive whatever comes their way.

3 There’s good news: The mind-set is about 25 percent hereditary (遗传的). Lee said, meaning people have some control over their level of good thoughts. She said people can become more optimistic by imagining a future in which their goals have been reached.

To conduct their research. Lee and the other scientists compared results from two independently conducted studies-one that followed nearly 70,000 women for a decade and another that followed about 1,400 men for 30 years. 4 They ranked themselves on statements including in uncertain times, “I usually expect the best” or “I'm always optimistic about my future.”

The conclusion that optimistic people tend to live longer holds true regardless of other factors, Lee said.

The study leaves one question unanswered: 5 Although it's unclear, the researchers believe optimists may be better at regulating stressors and bouncing (反弹) back I from upsetting events. Optimists also generally have healthier habits, like exercising more and smoking less.

    A.Not a natural optimist?

B.Our study took it one step further.

C.Why are optimists likely to live longer?

D.Why do women generally live longer than men?

E.An optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.

F.People self-reported their optimism on questionnaires.

G.Those who see the glass as half full, according to a new study, live longer.

  • 23、   The second little pig was unlucky. He built his house from sticks. It was blown away by a wolf. His brother, by contrast, built a strong house from bricks to prevent the wolf’s attack. However, in the real world it would help reduce pollution and slow global warming if more builders copied the wood-loving second pig.

Governments in the rich world are now trying to promote greener behavior by forcing developers to build new projects to “zero carbon” standards. These standards are less green than they seem. Wind turbines (涡轮) and solar panels on top of buildings look good but are much less productive than wind and solar farms. And the standards only count the emissions from running a building, not those given out when it was made. Those are thought to account for between 30% and 60% of the total over a structure’s lifetime.

Buildings can become greener. They can be made of more recycled wood and parts of them can be prefabricated in off-site factories, greatly reducing truck journeys. But no other building material has environmental certificates as exciting and overlooked as wood. The energy required to produce a wooden beam is one-sixth of that required for a steel one of comparable strength. When a mature tree is cut down, a new one can be planted to replace it, capturing more carbon. After buildings are pulled down, old wooden beams and boards are easy to recycle into new structures. Wood is also a good insulator (隔热材料). A softwood window frame provides nearly 400 times as much insulation as a plain steel and over a thousand times as much as an aluminium () frame.

Carpenters’ efforts alone will not bring the environmental cost of the world’s buildings into line. But using wood can do much more than what is appreciated. Thus, the second little pig was not wrong, just before his time.

1Why is the story about the pigs mentioned?

A.To bring up the topic of the text.

    B.To prove the author’s argument.

    C.To offer background information.

    D.To inspire the readers’ imagination.

2What can we know about the “zero carbon” standards?

A.It’s impossible to make them come true.

B.They don’t mean no carbon is given out.

C.They are only fit for developed countries.

D.It’s easy for them to meet today’s needs.

3What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.The ways of making buildings greener.

B.The usage of recycled steel in buildings.

C.The findings of new research about wood.

D.The advantages of wood as building materials.

4Which can replace the underlined word “prefabricated” in paragraph 3?

    A.Registered. B.Recycled.

    C.Constructed. D.Compared.

  • 24、   What comes to mind when you think of kung fu? If your mind is filled with images of Shaolin monks, Bruce Lee, or Kung Fu Panda, you wouldn't be wrong. But for Laurence J. Brahm, an American documentary filmmaker, the first thing that springs to mind is the concept of non-violence.

As Brahm explained, if you break down the character "wu" it consists of two characters: one is "ge" meaning dagger-axe; the other is"zhi" meaning to stop. So, the meaning of martial arts in Chinese is not the art of fighting, a concept that many people take for granted. On the contrary, he said, kung fu is the art of stopping fighting.

Brahm's relationship with kung fu dates back to the 1970s when he was a karate student in Hawaii. "My master always told me that if you want to fully understand karate, you have to go to Shaolin in China. That's where the origin is, "Brahm said. In 1981,he managed to visit the Shaolin Temple, situated at the foot of the Songshan Mountain in Central China, for the very first time. He left the mountain, a little disappointed at not finding the martial-arts spirit he expected. But his passion for kung fu and his desire to find out more were stronger than ever before.

Over the years he trained in many different styles, such as tai chi, Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do to understand all of them. "Martial arts can help us connect our body, connect our neural system, connect our blood flow, and also help connect us into our environment to increase our awareness. Martial arts is moving meditation (冥想)," Brahm said, his eyes bright and intense.

But to him, kung fu's charm and values are far more than that. He combined the knowledge from many masters and scholars with his own experience as a practitioner and tutor to extract 12 key principles and values of the martial arts: perseverance, roots, loyalty, respect, harmony, change, balance, centering, emptiness, flow, pragmatism, non-violence.

"Kung fu, in my eves, is a mirror of Chinese culture.” Brahm said “The traditional values of kung fu, actually, are in the minds of all Chinese people.”

【1】What does Paragraph 2 really want to tell us?

A.The character “ge” means “to stop”.

B.Kung fu is the “art of non-violence”.

C.The character “wu” consists of two characters.

D.Martial arts in Chinese means the “art of fighting”.

【2】How did Brahm manage to get the idea of kung fu’s values?

A.He visited the Shaolin Temple in 1981.

B.He trained in many different styles over the years.

C.His master told him about it when he was in Hawaii.

D.He joined his knowledge and his experience together.

【3】According to the passage, which word can best describe Brahm?

    A.Determined.

    B.Energetic.

    C.Confident.

    D.Friendly.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

    The Science of Happiness

Kate is a bright young woman with an intense focus on academics and a long-term goal of becoming a neuroscientist (神经系统科学家). Her path is charted very carefully each day according to schedule. She meets after school with the Brain Club, a group she started that discusses neuroscience and trades academic papers like baseball cards. It’s the kind of group you would never imagine in high school, which is mature beyond their years and led by their own initiative.

It would seem there was no room in Kate’s schedule for fun, let alone helping others. But then she found out about an elementary school hit hard by the pandemic, then inflation, and now a recession (衰退). It sits in the middle of a working-class neighborhood and most of parents were tired out by working physically demanding jobs from dawn to dark. Most families were doing the best but they could just put a few groceries on the table.

Halloween was approaching, and many of the families didn’t participate because they lacked costumes and couldn’t afford to give out candy themselves. So Kate called the headmaster of the elementary school. She was told the families wanted their kids to have fun on Halloween, but they also needed more books in the home.

So Kate went to work. She began with the Brain Club and then branched out to other clubs. They would sponsor a trick-or-treat event featuring games, candy and book giveaways. It was a huge organizational challenge—one that only a very organized person could handle. So Kate put her smarts to use. She arranged for groups of her fellows to decorate their cars and create games. She found a DJ and rounded up boxes of costumes for the kids. She even got the local police to decorate their cruiser (巡逻车). And she went to work getting kids books donated.
