  • 26、With the development of the tourist industry, traveling has become a fashionable way for people to spend their holiday. Most people like traveling with friends or families.【1】 Here are some advantages of traveling alone.

    【2】

If you travel alone, you are the boss of yourself. You can do things according to your own timetable. You can decide freely whenever you go, wherever you visit and whichever transport you take. You don't need to wait for your partners. You can decide how long you stay at a place and which hotel you live in. Traveling alone gives you more freedom in making decisions.

Gaining more confidence, strength and learning new skills.

It is a great challenge to be alone on the road.

When you travel alone you might face some problems, make decisions and even meet some dangers on your own. All these challenges will make you stronger, braver and much more confident.【3】

    Getting to know more people.

Traveling alone does not mean that you will always be alone. In fact, both other tourists and local people will be friendly to you. In order to know more about the places you are traveling to, you have to communicate with strangers. In this way, you can know more people. 【4】 Instead, the guide or your group members will talk with you all the way.

    Finding out your shortcomings.

【5】 When you are traveling with your friends and family members, it’s hard for you to find out your shortcoming. While traveling alone, you'll find that you can't achieve many things without others' help. After traveling alone, you are sure to become better by leaving your shortcomings behind.

    A.Having more freedom.

    B.Enjoying what you like.

C.However, it's also a good idea to travel alone.

D.The purpose of traveling alone is to make friends on the way.

E.Traveling alone is a great chance for you to discover your disadvantages.

F.If you travel in groups you'll have very little need to communicate with strangers.

G.When traveling on your own you can also learn many skills, for example, making plans.

  • 27、For every one article on some positive aspect, some positive element of life, wellbeing, satisfaction, joy, happiness, you get 21 articles on depression, anxiety and so on. Ratio of 21 to 1. Studies focus primarily on what doesn't work. And this is not a new phenomenon. The science of psychology(心理)has been far more successful on the negative than on the positive side. It has revealed to us much more about man's shortcomings, his illnesses, but little about his potentialities, his virtues or his psychological height. We study a lot of depression and anxiety, misjudgments and errors, very much focusing on this aspect and very little on the positive. If you had a person who 21 hours in a day was depressed and one hour in a day felt good or one day feeling good and then 21 days feeling anxious and depressed, you would say that this person would need help. And I think psychology needs help.

Today depression is 10 times higher than it was in 1960. Now part of it is because there's more awareness, because we measure better. But that's not all. It's also simply because objectively there's more depression. The average age for depression today is less than 15. Kids at very young age are introduced to the "information highway". And very often, they are not prepared, not able to deal with it in an effective way. So when we look at this data, we say we do need more research to help people overcome depression or anxiety. And there seems nothing wrong about that.

According to the studies, 47% Harvard students over the past year have experienced depression to the point of not functioning. So they couldn't leave home. They were really struggling to just basically get through the day. Now this is not unique to United States. We have a global epidemic here. And once again going back: Is the 21:1 ratio good? How can we even think about studying happiness and well-being and love and joy?

What I'm going to argue for is that we do need to also focus on the positive. I am going to talk about three reasons why we should do that. The first reason is that it is important to focus or what works, because what works or what we focus on rather creates reality. If we focus on what is working, we'll have more working in our world, more working in ourselves, more working in our relationships. The second reason why positive psychology as an independent field of study is important is that being happy is not just the negative statement of depression. It doesn't mean just getting rid of depression or anxiety that I am experiencing so I spontaneously(自然而然)become happy. That's not the case. That's not how it works. And finally, prevention, which is the most effective way of preventing hardship, is actually realized by focusing on and cultivating the positive. So for these three reasons, we need positive psychology.

【1】By using the ratio of 21 to 1, the author means in fact that__________.

A.on an average a person is depressed 21 hours a day and feels good one hour

B.most articles and studies focus primarily on what goes wrong

C.the science of psychology has revealed human's nature

D.nearly half of Harvard and nationwide students suffer from depression

【2】Which is the main reason why depression is 10 times higher than it was in 1960?

A.Simply because people are more aware and we measure better

B.Mainly because teenagers are too weak to fight it.

C.Objectively because there's more depression in the present world.

D.Possibly because we lack effective way to deal with depression.

【3】What is NOT closely related to positive psychology?

A.Preventing depression or anxiety by focusing on and cultivating the positive feelings.

B.Offering various ways of overcoming the negative feelings.

C.Focusing on what is working to have more working in our life.

D.Being happy is not equal to avoiding being unhappy.

【4】What might the author agree with in this article?

A.It is essential for our research to focus more on the bright side

B.There is no need for the science of psychology to deal with the negative side.

C.The conflict between the negative psychology and positive one can't be avoided.

D.We have to remove depression completely in order to be happy.

  • 28、   Many millions of tonnes of televisions, phones, and other electronic equipment are abandoned each year, partly because it’s cheaper to replace them than fix them, but also because we lack the skills to repair them. A UN report claims the 50 million tonnes of e-waste generated every year will more than double to 110 million tonnes by 2050, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the world.

However, there’s a growing trend for repair events and clubs which could be part of a solution to the growing amount of electrical and electronic junk. The BBC visited a Restart Project in London and one of its volunteers, Francesco Calo, said that “this project allow you to reduce waste, extend the life of objects, and it helps people who cannot afford to get rid of items that are developed a fault.”

As many electrical items contain valuable metals, another idea is e-waste mining. An experiment at the University of New South Wales involves extracting these materials from electronic gadgets. It’s thought that doing this could be more profitable than traditional mining. With phones typically containing as many as 60 elements, this could be part of the solution to our appetite for new technology.

These projects make total sense-collections of e-waste for recycling are “stagnating or even decreasing” according to Ruediger Kuehr, of the United Nations University. And in countries where there is no legislation, much of it just gets dumped. However, the European Union, for example, is trying to tackle the problem by insisting manufacturers have to make appliances longer-lasting and will have to supply spare parts for machines for up to 10 years.

1What does the underlined word “generate” in paragraph I mean?

    A.kept B.invented

    C.produced D.introduced

2Which of the following statements is true?

A.We must fix electronic equipment instead of replacing them.

B.Many electronic items contain more than 60 elements.

C.A Restart Project helps people learn to repair electronic items..

D.E-waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the world.

3Which is the following is the best title for the passage?

A.Solving the problem of e-waste B.Reducing the use of electrical items

C.Recycling electronic equipment D.Getting rid of electrical and electronic junk

4What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Repairing electrical items is the main solution to e-waste.

B.Longer-lasting electronic products will appear in the future European Market.

C.E-waste generated every year has doubled to 110 million tonnes.

D.E-waste mining will gradually take the place of traditional mining.

  • 29、   Like their ancient toga-wearing counterparts, modern philosophers continue to disagree on the nature of freewill. Do we really have any control over the choices we make and the things we desire, and if so, to what degree?

Theories of freewill vary, but the ancient words of Plato still line up with our modern perceptions(概念) of temptation and willpower. The respected Greek philosopher argued that the human experience is one of constant struggle between the intellect and the body, between rationality and desire. Along these lines, true freedom is only achievable when willpower unchains us from bodily, emotional, instinctual slavery.

You can find similar thoughts throughout world religions, most of which offer a particular and often difficult path to rise above our darker natures.

And science? Well, science mostly agrees with all of this. Willpower is all about overcoming your natural desires to eat cupcakes, skip your morning workout, play games on mobile phone, hit the snooze alarm and check your e-mail during a funeral.

Your willpower, however, is limited. If life were a video game, you'd see a glowing "willpower" or "ego"(自我) meter at the top of the screen next to your "life" meter. Successfully resist one temptation, and the meter drains a little. The next temptation drains the "willpower" meter even more, until there's nothing left at all.

Our modern scientific understanding of willpower in large part stems from a 1996 research experiment involving chocolate and radishes(小红萝卜). Psychologist Roy Baumeister led a study in which 67 test subjects were presented with tempting chocolate chip cookies and other chocolate-flavored treats before a persistence-testing puzzle. Here's the catch: The researchers asked some of the participants to withdraw from sweets and snack on radishes instead.

Baumeister's results told a fascinating story. The test subjects who resisted the sweet stuff in favor of radishes performed poorly on the persistence test. They simply didn't have the willpower left to resist slacking off(松懈).

The research inspired more than a thousand additional studies discussing everything from the influence of positive messages to the ego-sapping power of daily decisions.

Studies also show that cognitive capacity also affects our ability to hold out against temptation. Cognitive capacity is essentially your working memory, which you employ when resisting a temptation ... or holding a string of numbers in your head. A 1999 study from the University of Iowa professor Baba Shiv found that people tasked with remembering a two-digit number held out better than people remembering a seven-digit number when tempted with chocolate cake.

1What do you understand by ‘freewill’?

A.The control we have over the choices.

B.The choices we make and the things we desire.

C.The choices that philosophers force us to make.

    D.Our perception of temptation.

2According to Plato, when is true freedom available?

A.Willpower to realize one’s own ego. B.Our ability to overcome temptation.

C.Our ability to remember things. D.The desire to give in to temptation.

3What is meant by ‘cognitive capacity’?

A.When there is a struggle between the intellect and the body.

B.When our willpower helps us to overcome our basic instincts.

C.When we desire that which we cannot achieve.

D.When we have no control over our ego.
