二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Someday, umbrellas may do more than just keep people dry. A researcher in the Netherlands has designed a simple sensor(传感器) that “listens”to rain. And that sensor can turn an umbrella into a rain-measuring expert.

Tools like this can let anyone gauge the weather. That can help scientists make sure that satellites and radar(雷达)systems that track storms are doing a good job.

“Rain radar is a beautiful way of seeing where rainfall is up in the air. But you never know where it hits the ground, "says Rolf Hut. He designed the umbrella sensor.

Researchers want to know how much rain makes it to the planets surface. Not all rain that falls from a cloud reaches the ground. And it can be difficult for radar and satellites to measure that rain, particularly in cities. A host of big buildings can change how air and rain move during a storm. “It also explains why a single, expensive sensor-the kind that might be found at an official weather station-won’t give accurate( 精确的 )city-wide data, Hut says. But by putting a low-cost rain measuring tool into people's hands, scientists can learn more about how much rainfall differs in these and other hard-to-measure places.

On the inside of the umbrella is a small, yellow disk (磁盘). It is the rainfall sensor. The sensor is attached to a black Bluetooth headset that sends the collected data to a smartphone.

Hut came up with the idea to stick the same type of sensor on an umbrella when he was talking to kids about science. He showed them a photo of a policeman who was holding an umbrella and talking to a crowd in a microphone. Why not put the two together? He thought it could make a cool rainfall sensor .

When a storm came through, Hut compared the umbrella’s new“ear”for rain to official rain measuring equipment. And to his delight, he found the umbrella's measurements were“pretty good. ” His next step is to improve the umbrella sensor to be more accurate

1The purpose of this passage is to_______

    A. promote a unique umbrella B. inform us of a new invention

    C. make readers interested in science D. praise a researcher for his Invention

2The underlined word“gauge”in Paragraph 2 most probably means______

    A. change B. control

    C. measure D. sense

3Why can it be hard for official weather stations to measure the rain in cities?

    A. Big buildings influence the move of air and rain

    B. They are lacking in weather measuring equipment

    C. Rainfall differs hugely depending on various areas

    D. Their collected data cannot be sent to smartphones

4What do we know about Huts new invention?

    A. Hut is not satisfied with his new invention at all

    B. Hut's invention is something useful but expensive.

    C. He got the idea when talking to kids about science

    D. A policeman in the rain helped Hut with the invention

  • 27、   A four-year-old girl sees three biscuits divided between a stuffed crocodile and a teddy bear. The crocodile gets two; the bear one. “Is that fair?” asks the experimenter. The girl judges that it is not. “How about now?” asks the experimenter, breaking the bear’s single biscuit in half. The girl cheers up: “Oh yes, now it’s fair. They both have two.” Strangely, children feel very strongly about fairness, even when they hardly understand it.

Adults care about fairness too---but how much? One way to find out is by using the ultimatum(最后通牒)game, created by economist Werner Guth. Jack is given a pile of money and proposes how it should be divided with Jill. Jill can accept Jack’s “ultimatum”, otherwise the deal is off, and neither gets anything.

Suppose Jack and Jill don’t care about fairness, just about accumulating cash. Then Jack can offer Jill as little as he likes and Jill will still accept. After all, a little money is more than no money. But imagine, instead, that Jack and Jill both care only about fairness and that the fairest outcome is equality. Then Jack would offer Jill half the money; and Jill wouldn’t accept otherwise.

What happens when we ask people to play this game for real? It turns out that people value fairness a lot. Anyone offered less than 20-30% of the money is likely to reject it. Receiving an unfair offers makes us feel sick. Happily, most offers are pretty equitable; indeed, by far the most common is a 50-50 split.

But children, and adults, also care about a very different sort of unfairness, namely cheating. Think how many games of snakes and ladders have ended in arguments when one child “accidentally” miscounts her moves and another child objects. But this sense of fairness isn’t about equality of outcome: games inevitably have winners and losers. Here, fairness is about playing by the rules.

Both fairness-as-equality and fairness-as-no-cheating matter. Which is more important: equality or no-cheating? I think the answer is neither. The national lottery(彩票), like other lotteries, certainly doesn’t make the world more equal: a few people get rich and most people get nothing. Nevertheless, we hope, it is fair---but what does this mean? The fairness-as-no-cheating viewpoint has a ready answer: a lottery is fair if it is conducted according to the “rules”. But which rules? None of us has the slightest idea, I suspect. Suppose that buried in the small print at lottery HQ is a rule that forbids people with a particular surname let’s say, Moriarty. So a Ms Moriarty could buy a ticket each week for years without any chance of success.

How would she react if she found out? Surely with anger: how dare the organizers let her play, week after week, without mentioning that she couldn’t possibly win! She’d reasonably feel unfairly treated because ___________________.

To protest(抗议)against unfairness, then, is to make an accusation of bad faith. From this viewpoint, an equal split between the crocodile and the bear seems fair because normally, at least, it is the only split they would both agree to. But were the girl to learn that the crocodile doesn’t like biscuits or that the bear isn’t hungry, I suspect she’d think it perfectly fair for one toy to take the whole. Inequality of biscuits or anything else isn’t necessarily unfair, if both parties are happy. And the unfairness of cheating comes from the same source: we’d never accept that someone else can unilaterally(单方面地)violate agreements that we have all signed up to.

So perhaps the four-year-old’s intuitions(直觉)about fairness is the beginnings of an understanding of negotiation. With a sense of fairness, people will have to make us acceptable offersor we’ll reject their ultimatums and stick by thereasonablerules, or we’ll be on the warpath. So a sense of fairness is crucial to effective negotiation; and negotiation, over toys, treats etc, is part of life.

1From Paragraph 2 to 4, we can conclude______.

A.a 30-70 split is acceptable to the majority

B.fairness means as much to adults as to children

C.something is better than nothing after all

D.people will sacrifice money to avoid unfairness

2Which of the following does fairness-as-no-cheating apply to?

A.divisions of housework B.favoritism between children

C.banned drugs in sport D.schooling opportunities

3Which of the following best fits in the blank in Paragraph7?

A.the lottery didn’t follow the rules B.she was cheated out of the money

C.the lottery wasn’t equal at all D.she would never have agreed to those rules

4The chief factor in preventing unfairness is to ______.

    A.establish rules B.observe agreements

    C.strengthen morality D.understand negotiation

  • 28、   Peggy Whitson's job demands a daily twohour workout in a gym where weight has no meaning and the view changes at 17,000 miles an hour.

Whitson makes it look easy. At 57, she is the oldest woman to fly in space, breaking the record last November, 2016, when she began her third longterm stay at the International Space Station. After returning home in September, 2017, the NASA astronaut felt matter-of-fact about the age milestone.

“It wasn't a record I was seeking for,” Whitson said. “I was 42 and 48 for my first two space flights. I feel lucky that I was able to get to do another one in my 50s. I don't think people should let age discourage them, even on those jobs that require some amount of physical fitness. The oldest man is John Glenn (at 77), and we've had male astronauts in their 60s before, so it's just a matter of time before women start flying in space at this age”.

On the earth, she stays fit by weightlifting, biking, playing basketball and water skiing. She shared what it's like to live in microgravity: “It's like you're in a swimming pool, but you don't have to worry about breathing. If I push off from one side, I'm going to float to the other side. Every direction feels exactly the same, which is really hard for your brain to grasp, but it's amazing how fast you adapt.

It's a big shock for the body to come back to Earth—everything is so heavy. We spend a lot of time getting used to being back in gravity again. Back pain was really the most dramatic for me this time. For me, coming home is harder than going up into space.”

【1】How long did Peggy Whitson spend for her third stay in the International Space Station?

    A.About 300 days.

    B.About 708 days.

    C.About 107 days.

    D.About 57 days.

    B.Not surprising.

    C.Enthusiastic.

    D.Unbelievable.

【3】According to the passage, which of the following is true?

    A.Peggy Whitson likes swimming most.

B.Peggy Whitson is the oldest person to fly in space.

C.Peggy Whitson had been in space in 2002 and 2008.

D.There had been female astronauts over 60s flying in space before.

【4】Which of the following will Peggy Whitson probably say?

A.You can still be successful and do physical things when old.

B.I spent quite a lot of time getting used to the life in space.

C.The moment we reached the earth, we felt so relaxed.

D.I feel lucky that I am physically well after the whole journey.

  • 29、Every year, over 7.72 trillion kilograms of plastic is washed into the oceans. There are five huge areas in the world’s oceans that are a “soup” of floating rubbish. One of these areas, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), is three times as large as France.

Over a year ago, a group called Ocean Cleanup began using a huge floating screen to try to clean up plastic pollution in the ocean. After several failures, the group is now collecting plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. But the plastic is spreading out over a large area, so it's impossible to collect it piece by piece. So, the Ocean Cleanup had a plan. They got a long floating U-shaped tube with a screen hanging below it. As the tube and screen are pushed by the water and the winds, the U is meant to collect plastic rubbish, making it easy for a ship to collect and remove the plastic. The system uses the power of the wind and ocean, so it doesn’t need fuel.

The group began testing the first version, called “System 001”, last September. But it soon became clear that the screen was just moving with the plastic, not collecting it. Sometimes plastic would wash over the top of the tube. Even worse, System 001 got broken by surging seas and had to be towed to Hawaii for repairs.

But Mr. Slat, who got the idea for the Ocean Cleanup system, sees the project as an experiment, which means a failure is a chance to learn. The team collected and studied lots of information about what worked well and what didn’t. Then they changed the design. In June, an improved version, called “System001/B” was towed back to the GPGP.

The new version has a parachute (降落伞) attached to it. This makes the system move slightly slower than the plastic, allowing the plastic to be collected inside, as planned. But this success is still just the beginning of the work of the Ocean Cleanup. They want a better and larger system.

【1】What does the author want to show in Paragraph 1?

A.Humans should try to prevent plastic waste.

B.The GPGP is facing different kinds of pollution.

C.Plastic pollution in the oceans has become a serious problem.

D.A series of problems has been caused by plastic pollution.

    【2】What was the group’s plan?

A.To make use of the water and the winds.

B.To create a ship to collect waste in the oceans.

C.To collect the floating plastic waste piece by piece.

D.To gather up the floating plastic waste in the oceans.

【3】What can we know about the “System001”?

    A.It was a failure.

    B.It was a great success.

    C.It worked with a parachute.

D.It needed to be fueled regularly.

【4】What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 3?

    A.vast

    B.rough

    C.calm

    D.peaceful

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 30、Some of the advantages of bilingualism include better performance at tasks involving brain’s ability to plan and prioritize, better defense against Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默氏病)in old age and the obvious the ability to speak a second language. One advantage was not mentioned, though. Many multilinguals report different   ___. or even different worldviews, when they speak their different languages.

It’s an exciting idea that one’s very self could be_____ by the mastery of two or more languages other than in obvious ways such as________to new friends and literature, A former colleague,   ______, reported being ruder in Hebrew than in English. So what is going on here?

This______is not necessarily linked to the vocabulary or grammar of a second language. Significantly, most people are not symmetrically (对称性地)bilingual. Many have learned one language at home from parents, and another later in life, usually at school. They usually have different________in their different languages, and they are not always best in their first language. For example, when________in a foreign language, people are less likely to fall into a cognitive trap (answering a test question with an obvious-seeming but wrong answer) than in their native language. In part this is because working in a second language________the thinking. No wonder people feel different when speaking them. And no wonder they feel relaxed, perhaps more assertive or funnier, in the language where they were________from childhood.

Thenwhat of those bilinguals raised in two languages? Even for a speaker whose two languages are_______ in ability, there is another big reason that person will feel different in the two languages. This is because there is an important____between bilingualism and biculturalism. Of those bicultural bilinguals, we should be little____that they feel different in their two languages. Experiments in psychology have shown the power of “priming”small unnoticed factors that can affect behavior in big ways. Asking people to tell a happy story, for example, will put them in a better mood. The choice between two languages is a huge prime. Speaking Spanish rather than English, for a bilingual and bicultural Puerto Rican(波多黎各人)in New York, might _____ feelings of family and home. Switching to English might prime the same person to think of school and work.

So there are two very good reasons, asymmetrical ability and ________, that make people feel different speaking their different languages. We are still left with a third kind of________, though. We often see some languages’ inherent(内在的)properties overlap (重叠)with national stereotypes: French, rigorous; German, logical; English, playful. In this case, is there any convincing line of cause from grammar to personality?
