  • 27、I have a younger brother. To me, he is a fourteen-year-old kid named Joe, with blond hair and blue eyes. To others, he is different. Where I see a kid who just needs a lot more attention, others see a mentally disabled boy, a kid who cannot walk or talk or think for himself. I see someone who just makes daily routine a bit less routine. Others see an annoyance, I a bother.

This is not to say that I have never felt resentful (怨恨的) toward Joe. He is my brother, and with that comes responsibility. “Gina, could you stay in tonight and watch your brother?” “Gina, do me a favor and feed him dinner and change his diaper (尿布) later, please?” “Could you come home right after school today and get Joe off the bus?”

These are phrases that I have heard since I was twelve. And sure, they have made me resent my brother to a certain extent. I would think: that’s not fair! Everyone else can stay after and be a member of this club, or get extra help from that teacher. Or, all my friends are going out tonight, why can’t I? And, how come I have to feed him? He is not my son!

However, the small amount of resentment I feel toward my brother is erased a thousand times over by what I have learned from him. Besides making me responsible from a young age, and helping me be more accepting of all kinds of people, he has taught me to be thankful for what I have.

I know that there are moments in my life that I should cherish and that Joe will never experience. He will never laugh so hard that he cries. He will never feel the glory of a straight-A report card. He will never comfort a best friend crying on his shoulder. And he will never know how much his family love him.

Because he will never know, it is up to me to know, every second, how lucky I am. It is up to me to realize that life should be lived to its fullest, and that you should always, always be grateful that God, or whoever are the powers that be, gave you the ability to live your life the way you were meant to live it.

【1】We know from the first paragraph that Gina’s brother __________.

    A.causes trouble to neighbours

    B.pays more attention to others

    C.lives with mental disability

    D.considers daily routine a bother

【2】If Mother asks Gina to look after her brother now, what will she probably answer?

    A.I'm afraid not.

    B.No problem!

    C.It depends.

    D.It’s not fair!

【3】The passage intends to tell us that we should _____________.

    A.value the glory of success

    B.appreciate what life gives us

    C.comfort unfortunate people

    D.treasure meaningful moments

  • 28、   When people travel abroad, they may get the anxiety and feelings of surprise and confusion(困惑) felt when they have to operate within a different cultural and social environment. Besides, maybe when they come back to their own country, they will meet the reverse cultural shock. There is no doubt that people are experiencing cultural shock. So, what is cultural shock? And what causes cultural shock? We interviewed John Robb, Cristal and Jim about their feelings of facing cultural shock abroad.

John has been in China for 24 years. In his opinion, he thinks people wail a long time to make decisions in China. And in his culture, they usually make most decisions far in advance. So, that's a big difference.

Cris has been in Australia for 2 years. He thinks people from different countries speak different languages. And he usually speaks English with them. In learning, there are many people who are willing to communicate with him about different regional cultures. Australians eat more meat and high-calorie foods. And some raw vegetables go with their diet.

Jim has been in Britain for 7 years. He liked that freedom very much at first in Britain And he traveled to a lot of places and met a lot of people. But over time he found he had to say goodbye to them. Therefore, he became sad little by little. After wandering for a long time, he really looked forward to finding a sense of belonging.

As John said, " Every culture does things differently. So, you have to learn the new ways. ” Facing differences, the most important thing is to make changes. After staying in China, John enriched his experience, learned to think about his future and wanted to open a new life. After studying in Britain, Jim became independent, sensible and learned many life skills.

1Which is one of the feelings of culture shock?

    A.Being sorry. B.Being homesick. C.Being free. D.Being puzzled.

2How is Jim's experience of culture shock different from John's and Cris's?

A.He stayed abroad for the longest time. B.He experienced the reverse culture shock.

C.He was the one who felt homesick, D.He was the youngest among the interviewees.

3What's the author's attitude towards John's experience of culture shock?

4What's the last paragraph mainly about?

A.The conclusion of culture shock. B.The introduction to culture shock.

C.The cause of culture shock. D.The process of culture shock.

  • 29、Waking up dizzy never feels right. And how we wake up can not only affect our mood and the day’s outlook, but also our cognition (认知) and mental performance.

In some instances, dizziness after waking has the potential to be dangerous several hours later, by reducing our performance in pivotal decision-making such as in health settings, emergency responses, security, or while driving. This cognitive state of reduced alertness is referred to as “sleep inertia”. It’s a growing concern as it can have serious consequences while performing high-risk tasks, including driving.

But when it comes to choosing an alarm, what exactly is the best choice? A growing body of evidence suggests different alarm sounds can positively influence human performance after waking.

Our systematic review published in 2020 showed temporal frequencies around 500 Hz are better at arousing young children than 2000+Hz varieties. Voice notifications such as a person yelling “wake up!” work better than higher frequencies. However, they are not as effective as 500 Hz tonal beeping (哔哔声) alarms-similar to those preinstalled in most mobile phones. Our research also explores how qualities of music, and specifically melody (旋律), play a role in encouraging alert wakefulness.

We found that the way in which people interpret their alarms “tunefulness” also reflects how dizzy they feel after waking. Here, people who use alarms that carry a tune they will readily sing along to will experience less dizziness than those with a standard “beeping” alarm.

With this in mind, we developed a custom rhythmic melody that led to significantly better performance upon and after waking. when compared to standard beeping alarms.

Other studies have also found popular music, which can be interpreted as being melodic, is good to counteract sleep inertia after a short nap, and even more yet if it is music the listener personally enjoys.

【1】What does the underlined word “pivotal” mean in the second paragraph?

    A.Crucial.

    B.Severe.

    C.Cautious.

    D.Sensible.

【2】According to the passage, a perfect alarm must sound something like this:

    A.it is fast and loud

B.it is a standard beeping alarm

C.it has a melody you can easily sing to

    D.it has a dominant frequency around 2000+HZ

【3】How does the author develop the passage?

    A.By listing figures.

For many years, I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.

“Hurry, you'll be late for school,” my mother called to me.

“I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books?”

Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all 1 longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.

But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn't afford tuition. My hope of getting a diploma(毕业证书) was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I thought: “There goes my diploma.”

Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn't want her to live her life with regret. I didn't give up hope of her being back to school in some way.

One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. “That's the answer,” I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I'll just sign her up for night school.

Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said: “Mrs. Schantz, why don't you come back to school?”

I laughed: “There's no way! I'm 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. “This is only an experiment,” I warned him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.

    Paragraph 1:

It was exciting to go to school again but it was no game.
