The child went missing on January 22 while playing with friends at his grandmother’s house in the southern state of North Carolina. When the other children returned to the house and Casey did not, the family searched the area for almost an hour before calling the police. Police formed a search and rescue team to look for the young boy in the nearby woods. But two days went by and still-no Casey.

Then on January 24, someone called the police saying they heard a child crying in the woods. Police followed up on the information and found Casey at about 9:30 that night. They pulled him out of some briar. He was in good health. Casey told the rescuers that he had hung out with a black bear for two days, a bear he called his “friend”. Sheriff Chip Hughes spoke with reporters from several news agencies. He said Casey did not say how he was able to survive in the woods for three days in the cold, rainy weather. However, the sheriff said, “He did say he had a friend with him in the woods that was a bear.”

Hundreds of people helped in the search and rescue efforts, including some 600 volunteers, federal police and members of the military. • 28、Humour has been an essential part of human behaviour for thousands of years. There is comedy in the texts of Ancient Greece, and medieval (中世纪的)writings are filled with jokes. While these same jokes might not be as funny to us now as they were then, their authors understood that humour could not only entertain but also throw new light on sensitive or emotive issues.

Closer to modern times, Mark Twain, the American writer, is remembered for his witty(风趣的)words in his everyday interactions with people. For instance, while on a lecturing tour, Twain went into a barber’s. The barber, not recognizing him, told him that if he wanted to go to the event he would have to stand, as there were no seats left in the theatre. Twain’s response was, “That’s just my luck. I always have to stand when that fellow lectures! ”

Like Twain, Lin Yutang, was also noted for his unique brand of humour. Once, having been invited to dinner at a university, he was put on the spot when the president suddenly asked him to give a speech. Thinking on his feet, Lin started to tell a story about a cruel Roman emperor who tried to feed a man to wild animals, first a lion, then a tiger. Each time the man whispered something in the car, after which the animal shook its head and walked away unhappily. “What did you say to my animals?” said the emperor, astonished. “I told them they had to make a speech after eating me for dinner.” Lin’s audience roared with laughter. With this little joke, Lin was able to make people laugh, while gently telling off the president.

B.Both use humor to make life relaxing.

C.Both are cager to cause a roar of laughter.

D.Both combine humor with serious writings.

【3】What does the underlined phrase mean?

    A.Stepping onto the stage quickly.

    B.Thinking carefully about his feet.

C.Standing up as soon as possible.

D.Having quick wits in an emergency.

【4】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The president was Lin’s close friend.

B.The president was a cruel emperor.

C.Lin was willing to give a speech.

  • 29、   Glancing at the large room through her blue eyes, four-year-old Nicole in her oversize short skirt began to cry. "It's okay: honey.” I tried to encourage." Come and play with the other children.” But the more I persuaded, the more tears flowed.

Every week for the past eighteen years, I've spent Tuesdays with a dozen kids dressed in satin ribbons, feathers, butterfly wings and plastic jewelry. These afternoons are free flowing and non-threatening but for some strange reason, Nicole saw this as the final kiss of death.

In her mind, she was going to be left all alone with a strange woman and several other children. Uncontrollable tears rapidly started to flow and there wouldn't be enough tissues in the whole building to mop up the flood.

Tip toeing quickly to the door, I gently called to her father." Just sit in here for a while until she warms up.” I said. Standing next to his first born, Rich took his daughter's hand and led her to the centre of the room. Slowly he pushed, but again the damn broke. "Daddy, don't leave me!" Nicole cried. "Don't make me do this." Bending down on his knees until they were nose-to-nose, Rich gently whispered in her ear, “I'll do it with you. There's nothing to be afraid of." Holding her entire young hand around his middle two fingers, the pair went on to skip around the floor.

“Wow!" I cheered. "You deserve a prize. I've never seen a dad do that before.”

For a brief second, Rich paused, and then with a smile, he replied, "Isn't this part of the job?"'

That wonderful moment was two years ago and I've thought of it often, especially when I see how well Nicole performs in class. More importantly, however, I've remembered it because it takes me back to my own dance beginnings with my father.

From the moment I was born, music spoke to me. The moment the radio or record player was turned on, I moved my arms and legs about the room in wild fashion. Most of the time, I was fine to perform alone, but the minute my dad walked into the room, I'd jump into his arms, hug him tight and place my tiny feet on top of his highly shined shoes.

While this memory is sweet, the real reason I hold it dear to my heart is because of what went behind his action. My father was not the most gifted creature on two legs when it came to dancing, but he'd stepped out of his comfort zone(区域)and danced because he knew how much I loved it. For him, helping his only daughter develop, despite how uncomfortable it made him feel, was part of his job.

As a child, my father did what he was told and lived as expected But when it came to his own children, he allowed us the chance to follow our own path and we were never forced to be like him, live like him or think like him. He provided an environment where my three brothers and I were permitted to explore our own jungle until we found the life that was right for us.

To all the fathers who've influenced your children's lives by stepping out of your comfort zones to dance, whether it is in mind, body or soul--this one's for you! You give a child the courage to stand on the center stage of life.

1Why was Nicole so sad at her first dancing class?

A.She was asked to mop up the floor.

B.She had to be left with the strangers.

C.She didn't like the oversized dress.

D.She was threatened by the older boys.

2What does the father mean by saying "Isn't this part of the job?” in Paragraph 6?

    A.Dancing with their daughter is a father's part-time job.

B.It's a father's job to force her daughter to learn dancing.

C.Fathers are always there to help their daughter if necessary.

D.Fathers are required to accompany their daughter in dancing classes.

3What do we know about the author's father?

    A.He was fond of dancing.

B.He liked to make choices for his children.

C.He required his children to follow his path.

D.He tried to live up to his parents' expectations.

4Why did the author treasure the memory of dancing with her father when she was a child?

A.It was her father who taught her to dance.

B.Her father encouraged her to dance when she was unwilling to do so.

C.Her father tried to please her although he was not comfortable about dancing.

D.Her father was patient enough when he was dancing with her.

The meaning of silence varies among cultural group. Silence may be 1, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every 2 with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs. Many native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of 3 among people, just at some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore when a person from one of these culture is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be 4 is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these culture, silence is a call for 5.

Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with 6 among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show 7between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority(权威)rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.

Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the 8 meanings of silence wen they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own persona and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not 9 too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing 10 of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
