26、 When you work out a carbon footprint(碳足迹),a lot of factors are taken into consideration. For example, driving to the grocery store bums a certain amount of fuel, and fossil fuels are the primary sources of greenhouse gases. But that grocery store is powered by electricity, and its employees probably drive to work, so the store has its own carbon footprint. In addition, the products that the store sells were all shipped there, so that must also be factored into the total carbon footprint. Beyond that, the fruits. Vegetables, and meats that the store sells were all grown or raised on farms-a process that produces methane(甲烷),which has a greenhouse effect 25 times greater than CO. All of those elements must be combined to understand the full carbon footprint of a given activity.
Although adding up one's own carbon footprint can be difficult, online calculators can do some of the work for you, giving a rough estimate(估算)of your carbon footprint based on the size of your household, the efficiency of your machines, how much you drive or fly, what you eat, and how much you recycle
This isn't perfect, but it is a good way to measure your activities so you can know roughly how much CO2 they produce and take steps to reduce your carbon footprint.
Methods of reducing your carbon footprint include driving more efficient vehicles (or making sure that your current vehicles are properly maintained), taking public transportation, using energy efficient machines, building your home with special materials to reduce heating and air conditioning costs. consuming food that doesn't require as much transportation, and eating less meat which has a higher carbon footprint than fruits and vegetables. People and companies can also offset some of their CO2, emissions(排放)by purchasing carbon credits, the money from which can go into projects such as planting trees or investing in renewable energy.
【1】By giving the example of the grocery store, the author wants to tell us that____
A.driving to the store burns a certain amount of fuel
B.the greenhouse effect of methane is greater than that of CO2
C.the fossil fuels are the primary sources of greenhouse gases
D.many factors need to be considered when figuring out a carbon footprint
【2】Which of the following best explains the underlined word 'offset' in the last paragraph?
A.make up for
B.make sense of
C.take control of
D.catch up with
【3】The passage is mainly about____
A.whether it is possible to reduce the carbon footprint
B.what we can do to figure out the carbon footprint
C.how to estimate and reduce the carbon footprint
D.why we should reduce the carbon footprint
27、Jose Adolfo is a banker from Peru. He encourages children to save money and offers his customers cash for recycling plastic wastes. But the remarkable thing is that he is still a child himself.
By the age of 7, he decided to create a bank for children. He was motivated by seeing his classmates skipping lunch because they had spent the little money they had on sweets or football cards. What drove him even more was the poverty he saw among children.
With the support of a local company, the 14-year-old founded the Bartselana student bank which now has more than 2,000 customers between the ages of 10 and 18. Children can withdraw (提取) money from several cashpoints of the bank. They can also monitor their balances online. What makes it different from traditional banks is that it sets savings goals for children. They have to reach those goals in order to withdraw their money.
The student bank really took off when he came up with the “Recycle Plan”, a new way for the children to earn money by collecting recyclable plastic or paper waste. Students can bring recyclable plastic bottles, used school books and old newspapers to the schools and put them into the collecting boxes. The recycling is weighed and the money goes to their bank accounts.
The bank recycles 4.4 tons of material a month and has collecting boxes in seven schools in Arequipa. More are on a waiting list. Increasingly the model is in demand in the rest of Peru and abroad.
His efforts have been noticed by Peru’s environment ministry. “He’s making an amazing change in financial (理财的) education that perhaps many adults could not come up with,” said the Peru’s environment minister, Lucia Ruiz. “He’s achieving a double goal because he’s not just designing a financial opportunity for children and teenagers but also helping to reduce waste in the country.”

28、 Nowadays, people all over the world have various ways of dealing with a common cold. Some take over-the-counter(非处方的)medicines such as aspirin while others try popular home remedies(治疗) like herbal tea or chicken soup. However, here is the tough truth about the common cold:nothing really cures it.
Then why do people sometimes still believe that their remedies work?According to James Taylor, a professor at the University of Washington, colds usually go away on their own in about a week, improving a little each day after symptoms peak, so it’s easy to believe it’s medicine rather than time that deserves to be praised, USA Today reported.
To many of us, it still seems hard to believe that we can deal with more serious diseases yet are powerless against something as common as a cold. Recently, scientists came closer to figuring out why. To understand it, you first need to know how antiviral(抗病毒的)drugs work. They attack the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures of the virus. To do that, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right piece of a jigsaw(拼图), which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3-D model to study its surface before they can develop an antiviral drug that is effective enough.
The two cold viruses that scientists had long known about were rhinovirus(鼻病毒)A and B. But they didn’t find out about the existence of a third virus, rhinovirus C, until 2006. All three of them lead to the common cold, but drugs that work well against rhinovirus A and B don’t work well when used against C.
“This accounts for most of the previous failures of drug trials against Thinovirus,”study leader Professor Ann Palmenberg at University of Wisconsin-Madison, US, told Science Daily.
Now, more than 10 years after the discovery of rhinovirus C, scientists have finally built a highly-detailed 3-D model of the virus, showing that the surface of the virus is, as expected, different from that of other cold viruses.
With the model in hand, hopefully a real cure for a common cold is on its way. Soon, we may no longer have to waste our money on medicines that don’t really work.
【1】What does the author think of popular remedies for curing a common cold?
A. They are really quite effective.
B. They are slightly helpful.
C. They still need to be improved.
D. They actually don’t work.
【2】How do antiviral drugs work?
A. By identifying the viruses and breaking them up directly.
B. By reshaping the top layers of the target cold viruses.
C. By attacking the viruses one after another like finishing a jigsaw.
D. By absorbing different kinds of cold viruses at the same time.
【3】What can we infer from the passage?
A. The surface of cold viruses looks quite similar.
B. Scientists have already found a cure for the common cold.
C. Knowing the structure of cold viruses is the key to developing an effective cure.
D. Scientists were not aware of the existence of rhinovirus C until recently.
【4】What is the best title for this passage?
A. Drugs against cold viruses
B. Helpful home remedies
C. No current cure for common cold
