Shree Bose is one of the most impressive kids graduating from Fort Worth Country Day High School this year. Bose has a large circle of friends, and there’s one who you may have heard of: President Obama. He has twice publicly recognized her achievements in cancer research and spoken with her in the Oval Office.
If that isn’t enough, Bose recently gave a TED Talk about her work with the cancer drug Cisplatin, which also won her first prize at the Google Science Fair and recognition as one of Glamour magazine’s Young Amazing Women of the Year.
After watching her grandfather struggle with liver cancer, Bose was determined to help out in any way she could. As a high school student though, her scientific choices were limited. She reached out to various hospitals and research centers, but doctors turned down her requests because they felt she was too inexperienced medically.
Only the North Texas Science Health Center respected her determination and chose to guide her. The results were amazing.
Bose chose to study a protein (蛋白质) and its reaction with the cancer drug Cisplatin. She noticed that when she prevented this protein from growing, Cisplatin was allowed to begin destroying cancer cells once again.
“My project not only contributes to the understanding of the relationship between the protein and Cisplatin, but also suggests a newer, more effective treatment for patients who resist Cisplatin,” Bose said.
Bose’s achievements aren’t limited to the lab, though. She was also captain of her swim team and editor-in-chief of her school paper.
Bose is currently getting practical experience at the National Institute of Health and she’ll be attending Harvard in the fall. She plans to study molecular biology and go to medical school. Eventually, she would like to be a doctor.

28、 Recalling their college days, friends Miguel Amaro,Ben Grech and Mariano Kostelec all say that their biggest problem was finding somewhere to live in the first place.
As an international student from Argentina,Mariano had to pay 12 months’ rent in advance to get his place in London.Dutchman Miguel booked some super-expensive residence in Nottingham because he didn’t know any better.Ben from the UK was looking around the streets of Nottingham knocking on doors trying to find a place.
A year after graduating from their own separate universities, the three men realized that there was a business opportunity. They came up with a plan to create an online marketplace matching students with accommodation(住处)。So in 2011 the three started work on their business and website Uniplaces.
They invested around E50,000.Later that year they won first round funding of 200,0000 euros led by the founder of UK property website Zoopla.
From there it was down to business, getting a permanent office in Lisbon,Portugal and persuading landlords(房东)to join the site and checking properties(房产)。The Uniplaces website was then officially launched in 2013,with an initial 50 properties in the Portuguese capital listed on the site.
Mariano,28,says,”We picked Lisbon as our first city as it totally made sense to stay here It is a low cost, good location with access to great talent such as good engineers, and people with excellent language skills, which is great when dealing with so many international students.”
Students using Uniplaces pay one month’s rent in advance via the website, and the sum goes through to the landlord 24 hours after they move in.I hereafter they pay directly to the landlord.Uniplaces takes a service fee of 20%-25%of the student’s first month’s rent
Since its launch, three million nights have been booked through the platform.which currently lists over 40,000 properties. The company has now employed 132 employees

29、 American high school students are terrible writers, and one education reform group thinks it has an answer: robots. Or, more accurately, robot-readers—computers programmed to scan students’ essays and spit out a grade.
Mark Shermis, professor of the College of Education at the University of Akron, is helping to hold a contest, set up by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation (WFHF), which promises $ 100,000 in prize money to programmers who write the best automated grading software. “If you’re a high school teacher and you give a writing task, you’re walking home with 150 essays,” Shermis said. “You’re going to need some help.”
Automated essay grading was first proposed in the 1960s, but computers back then were not up to the task. In the late 1990s, as technology improved, several textbooks and testing companies jumped into the field. Today, computers are used to grade essays on South Dakota’s student writing assessments and a handful of other exams, including the TOEFL test of English fluency, taken by foreign students.
The Hewlett contest aims to show that computers can grade as well as English teachers—only much more quickly and without all that depressing red ink. “Automated essay scoring is objective,” Shermis said. “And it can be done immediately. If students finish an essay at 10 pm, they will get a result at 10: 01 pm.”
Take, for instance, the Intelligent Essay Assessor, a web-based tool marketed by Pearson Education, Inc. Within seconds, it can analyze an essay for spelling, grammar, organization, and help students to make revisions. The program scans for key words and analyzes semantic (语义的) patterns, and Pearson claims that it can understand the meaning of text much the same as a human reader.

A. Rewrite essays
B. Underline the mistakes in red ink

NASA is on a journey to Mars, with a goal of sending humans to the Red Planet in the 2030s. That journey is already well under way.
For decades, the agency and its partners have sent orbiters, landers and rovers(探测器), 【1】 increasing our knowledge about the Red Planet and paving the way for future human explorers. The Curiosity rover has gathered radiation data to help us protect future astronauts, and the upcoming Mars 2020 rover will study the 【2】 of Martian resources, including oxygen.
Building on the robotic legacy(遗产), the human exploration of Mars crosses three thresholds(门槛), each with 【3】 challenges as humans move farther from Earth: Earth Reliant, the Proving Ground, and Earth Independent.
Earth Reliant explorations is 【4】 on research aboard the International Space Station. The orbiting microgravity laboratory serves as a world - class test bed for the technologies and communications systems needed for human missions to deep space. Astronauts are learning about what it takes to live and work in space for long periods of time, improving our understanding of how the body changes in space and how to protect astronauts' health.
Next, we move into the Proving Ground, 【5】 a series of missions near the moon called “cislunar space” to test the capabilities we will need to live and work at Mars. Astronauts on the space station are only hours away from Earth, but the proving ground is days away, a(n) 【6】 stepping stone to a Mars mission, which will be months away from home.
Also in the 2020s, we’ll send astronauts on a year-long mission into this deep space proving ground, confirming habitation and testing our 【7】 for Mars.
Finally, we become Earth Independent, building on the knowledge 【8】 on the space station and in deep space to send humans to low-Mars orbit in the early 2030s.
This phase will also test the entry, descent(降落)and landing techniques needed to get to the Martin surface and study what's needed for in-situ resource utilization or "living off the land". NASA is already studying the 【9】 "Exploration Zones" on Mars that would offer compelling science research and provide resources our astronauts can use.
There are challenges to 【10】 Mars, but we know they are solvable. We are well on our way to getting there, landing there, and living there.
