二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Going green seems to be a fad(时尚)for a lot of people these days. Whether that is good or bad, we can’t really say, but for the two of us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle.

On April 22, 2011, we decided to go green every single day for an entire year. This meant doing 365 different green things, and it also meant challenging ourselves to go green beyond the easy things. Rather than recycle and reduce our energy, we had to think of 365 different green things to do and this was no easy task.

With the idea of going green every single day for a year, Our Green Year started. My wife and I decided to educate people about how they could go green in their lives and hoped we could show people all the green things that could be done to help the environment. We wanted to push the message that every little bit helps.

Over the course of Our Green Year, we completely changed our lifestyles. We now shop at organic(有机的)stores. We consume less meat, choosing green food. We have greatly reduced our buying we don’t need. We have given away half of what we owned through websites. Our home is kept clean by vinegar and lemon juice, with no chemical cleaners. We make our own butter, enjoying the smell of home-made fresh bread. In our home anyone caught doing something ungreen might be punished.

Our minds have been changed by Our Green Year. We are grateful for the chance to have been able to go green and educate others. We believe that we do have the power to change things and help our planet.

  • 27、   About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier, only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman!

There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of greena strange world indeed.

Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell the difference between colors.

There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color.

Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes (蚊子) prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible (看不见的) colors around us.

1According to the passage, what can we do with the help of the “cones”?

A.We can tell different shapes. B.We can tell orange from yellow.

C.We can kill mosquitoes. D.We can see in a weak light.

2Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by women?

    A.There are fewer color-blind women.

    B.Women are more careful.

C.Women are fonder of driving than men.

D.Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.

3Which of the statements about the color-blind is true?

A.All of them see everything in shades of green.

B.None of them can see deep red.

C.None of them can tell the difference between blue and green.

D.Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing color.

4What light can we use to attract and kill mosquitoes?

A.A red light. B.A yellow light. C.A green light. D.A blue light.

5What is the passage mainly about?

A.Color and its surprising effects. B.Women being luckier than men.

C.Color blindness. D.Danger caused by color blindness.

  • 28、 According to sociologists(社会学家), every modern industrial society has some form of social stratification(阶层). Class, power and status are important in deciding people's rank in society.

Class means a person's economic position in society. A commonly used classification is lower class, middle class and upper class. While sociologists disagree on how these terms should be exactly defined, they do describe societies like the United States quite well. One study shows that 53% of Americans belong to the lower class, 46% the middle class, and 1% the upper class. Interestingly, a surgeon earning $500,000 a year and a bus driver earning $50,000 a year both regard themselves as the middle class!

Power refers to the amount of control a person has over other people. Obviously, people in positions of great power (such as governors) exercise(行使)big power, but people who take orders from others have less power. Power and class do not always go hand in hand, however. For example, the governor of a state has great power, but he or she may not belong to a corresponding (相应的)economic class. Generally, however, there is a relationship between power and class. To our knowledge, there aren't too many people who aren't millionaires in the US. Senate!

Status is the honor or respect attached to a person's position in society. It can also be affected by power and class, but not necessarily so. For example, a university professor may have a high status but not belong to a high social class or have a lot of power over others.

1What can we learn about “the middle class” from Paragraph 2?

A.People earning $50,000 a year belong to the middle class.

B.Nearly half Americans belong to the middle class.

C.People generally consider bus drivers as the middle class.

D.Sociologists have a clear definition of the middle class.

2According to the text, we know that ________.

A.Power and class do not always correspond with each other

B.Status refers to a person's economic position in society

C.People with high status have a lot of control over others

D.Class is less important in deciding a person's social rank

3Which of the following shows the structure of the whole text?

    A. B.

    C. D.

  • 29、Some people succeed, while others do not.   【1】    The first thing you must remember is that in order to succeed, it is necessary that you should be optimistic. You must have faith in yourself and in your ability to succeed, otherwise you are not very likely to win, or even to try.

【2】. You need to work with every fibre of your being. When you really have a thirst for success, you put your performance under the microscope to make sure that every little thing you do works towards your goal.

【3】 . Most successful people are not as conventional as the people around them. Where others see failure, they see possibility. Where others see a lack, they see a surplus (盈余). 【4】. They are more than just optimistic--- they see the world in a different way than others do, and do things in a different way.

To become successful, you may find it important to read about successful people, to see how they have achieved success. 【5】 .  While everyone's road to success is different, many successful people have the same drive and the same qualities.

Practising is just as important if you want to succeed, because practice makes perfect. This will help you feel confident about what you do.

If you own the qualities above, success is yours for the taking!

A.Where others see a closed door, they see an open window.

B.You need to be able to look people in the eye and be honest.

C.Having proper motivation is not optional--- it is another key to success.

D.This is because some people own certain qualities that others do not have.

E.Their stories will encourage and inspire you as you climb the ladder of success.

F.Practice every day at whatever career you are in, and you will see yourself begin to grow.

G.Another quality that helps people succeed is the ability to do and think about things in new and different ways.
