    RUN FOR A BETTER LIFE

The sport of running offers many advantages. First, it is a great way to get in shape. It also helps relieve stress, gives you more energy, and makes you proud of what you are accomplishing. Most runners are happy with just these few items:

●A comfortable pair of running shoes that has good arch and ankle support and allows your feet to breathe properly.

●A good quality stopwatch such as Penta, ATLAS, or Life Time.

    ●A water bottle.

If you are a beginner, try following these steps:

    1. Walk slowly for 30 minutes.

    2.Add short running sessions(一段时间)into your 30-minute walk.

    3. Try a 30-minute run when you feel ready, but never become so breathless that you could not carry on a conversation.

You will soon discover benefits from running that you will not want to give up. You will feel more relaxed and focused. Your concentration will improve and you will find that, even though you are taking 30-minute running each day from your busy schedule, you will get more done.

  • 27、   October 15th is the Global Hand washing Day. Activities are planned in more than 20 countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap. For exampledonors(捐赠者) will give 150000 bars of soap to schools in Ethiopia.

Experts say people around the world wash their hands every day, but very few use soap at so-called important moments. These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.

Global Hand washing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for hand washing with soap. Partners include the United Nations Children's Fund, American government agencies, the World Bank and soap makers Unlever and Procter and Gamble. The organizers say all soaps are equally effective at removing disease-causing germ(细菌). They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub(揉搓) it into all areas, including under the fingernails(指甲). Rub for at least twenty seconds. Then rinse well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth or wave them in the air.

The Partnership for Hand washing says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend in washing hands. Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell. The Partnership for Hand washing also says washing with soap before eating or after using the toilet could save more lives than any vaccine(疫苗)or medicine. Hand washing could also prevent the spread of other diseases. When people get germs on their hands, they can infect(感染)themselves by touching their eyes, noses or mouths. Then they can infect others.

1What's the best title for this passage

A.Say no to washing hands in the wrong way.

B.Find out why washing hands carefully is so important.

C.Hand washing so important-it gets a day of its own.

D.Want to live a longer life-wash your hands.

2The last paragraph mainly tells us _______.

A.how to wash your hands correctly

B.why washing hand with soap is so important

C.the dangers of washing hands without soap

D.when we should especially wash our hands with soap

  • 28、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Surveys in Britain and America consistently show that the biggest worry parents have for their school-age children is that they will be bullied. In Japan more pupils commit suicide on September 1st, just before the start of the new term, than on any other day. 1. Many victims are too ashamed to tell a teacher. One former victim who recently finished high school in Vancouver says he kept the pain to himself for several months, worried that teachers would “judge” him.

Children who are from ethnic minorities, short, obese, disabled, gay or have poor social skills are at higher risk. In America bullies pick on “nerds”. In China and South Korea, by contrast, those with poor grades are at higher risk. A study in 2013 of the Arab world found that the best predictor of being bullied was having crooked teeth. 2. A graduate student at Oxford University says he was “emotionally scarred for at least five years” after being tormented in middle school in Hong Kong.

    3. In Britain all state schools have since 2006 been required to adopt a school-wide anti-bullying policy. By 2015 every state in America had anti-bullying legislation, States with the strictest laws, such as Massachusetts, require school officials to report all bullying to the head, who must “promptly conduct an investigation”.

Central to tackling bullying in schools, argues Christina Salmivalli of the University of Turku in Finland, is to encourage bystanders to intervene. 4. By teaching bystanders to speak up, or at least not to laugh at the victim, the “social rewards” of bullying can be reduced, she says.

Other approaches abound. The International School of Beijing has security guards in every changing room. Many school-bus drivers in North America assign seats, keeping suspected bullies close to the front. Every classroom at Rhiw-Bechan School in mid-Wales has a “worry-box” for pupils to report bullies anonymously.

    A. The main motivation for bullying is the drive for social status.

    B. Victims of bullying may in turn bully others.

    C. But bullied children everywhere risk long-term health effects.

    D. But educators struggle to spot bullying, let alone to stop it.

    E. Cultural differences complicate the picture.

    F. Most rich countries have anti-bullying laws.

  • 29、   Can you imagine digging in your yard one day and finding a life-sized soldier made completely of clay? That’s what happened several decades ago when farmers in Xi'an, China, were digging wells.

Archaeologists(考古学家) have since found about 6,000 more of these soldiers, along with horses, weapons, tools, and other artifacts. The huge army was meant to protect the tomb of the first ruler of China. The first emperor of China, Qin Shihuang, accomplished a huge amount during his rule. Between 221 and 210 B.C., he started the construction of the Great Wall. He built a large network of roads. He introduced a new writing system, currency(货币), and a set of measurements. The emperor also ordered the construction of a huge army of life-sized terracotta soldiers. These, he hoped, would protect his tomb after his death.

The soldiers in Xi'an's terracotta museum are today light brown, but they weren't always. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple. Sadly, most of the colors did not last to the present day. After being exposed to air during excavation(挖掘), the coating under the paint began to fall off. The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking with it important pieces of history.

Now new techniques are starting to reveal the army's true colors. Archaeologists have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes. Chinese and German researchers have developed a special liquid to help preserve the soldiers’ colors. After they find a soldier or other artifacts(手工艺品), archaeologists spray it with the liquid. They then cover it in plastic. Archaeologists are also finding colors in the dirt around the soldiers. It’s important not to disturb the dirt, so the colors won’t be lost. “We are treating the earth as an artifact,”says archeologist Rong Bo, the museum’s leading chemist. The next challenge, says Rong, is to find a way to apply the colors to the army again. Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin's army back to life in full, vivid color.

1The terracotta soldiers were constructed to _________.

    A. show the outside world about China’s greatness

    B. be enjoyed by everyday people

    C. frighten China’s enemies

    D. protect Emperor Qin’s tomb

2What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

    A. The soldiers lost their colors very quickly.

    B. The soldiers’ paint fell off because of the high temperature.

    C. Visitors to the museum are not actually seeing the real soldiers.

    D. Being exposed to water is bad for the soldiers.

    3What have archaeologists recently discovered?

    A. A place with over a hundred soldiers.

    B. A written description of the soldiers’ true colors.

    C. A special liquid in the tomb to preserve the soldiers’ colors.

    D. A new tomb for Emperor Qin.

4Which statement would Rong Bo probably agree with?

    A. The soldiers should stay in their current, brown color.

    B. Artists should be able to paint the soldiers in any color they want.

    C. Archaeologists can only guess at the soldiers’ original colors.

    D. We should try to restore the army’s vivid colors.
