二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、I was putting on my boots just now in what the novelists call “a brown study.” There was no urgent reason for putting on my boots. I was not going out, and my slippers were much more comfortable. But something had to be done. I wanted a subject for an article. Now if you are accustomed to writing articles for a living, you will know that sometimes the difficulty is not writing the article, but choosing a subject. It is not poverty you suffer from, but an embarrassment of riches.

But what has this to do with putting on my boots? It is a reasonable question and I will tell you. For an hour I had paced my room in my slippers in search of a subject. I had looked out of the window over the sunlit valley, and watched the smoke of a distant train disappearing towards the west. I had sharpened every pencil I had on me with great care. But the more I sharpened my pencils, the more anxious I grew about the theme for an article.

It was at this moment that I remembered my boots. The act of bending my body changed the current of the blood. You saw things in a new light. So I fetched my boots and sat down to put them on.

The thing worked like a charm. For in my preoccupied condition I picked up my right boot first. Then mechanically I put it down and seized the left boot. And then the fact flashed on me that all my life I had been putting on my left boot first. If you had asked me five minutes before which boot I put on first, I should have said that there was no first about it; yet now I found I was in a habit so fixed that the attempt to put on my right boot first affected me. The thing couldn’t be done. And then came into my mind that fascinating book of Samuel Butler’s on Life and Habit. Yes, certainly, here was a subject that would “go.” I took out a pencil, seized some writing paper, and sat down to write on “The Force of Habit.”

【1】By “It is not poverty you suffer from, but an embarrassment of riches.” in paragraph 1, the author means _____.

A.some subjects are too complicated or embarrassing to write on

B.poverty is no longer a problem nowadays, but embarrassment is

C.poor people don’t encounter as many embarrassments as the rich

D.there’re so many subjects that it’s hard to decide which to choose

【2】Why did the author sharpen his pencils with great care?

    A.To help himself promote thinking.

B.To draw what he saw out of the window.

C.To write his article more smoothly.

D.To relieve himself of anxiety about writing.

【3】Putting on the boots helped the author _____.

A.get rid of his fixed habit

    B.lower his blood pressure

C.see things from a new angle

    D.free his preoccupied mind

【4】The passage is mainly about the author’s _____.

    A.personal attitude towards habits

B.daily routines as a professional writer

C.writing process of a special article

  • 28、I am reading a novel at the moment, a story set in Britain and India in the 19th century. It was written by an Indian author who now lives in Denmark, but neither in the language of Hindi nor Danish. Although the paperback edition I’m holding was published in New Delhi, India, four years ago, I (an American) purchased it recently from a second-hand bookshop in Tokyo, Japan.

That’s quite a history already. But there’s more.

The novel is a tale of various mysteries, all expertly put into a well-structured story by a very skillful author. Yet my particular copy presents even more mysteries than the tale.

One summer morning in the year of my paperback’s publication — on July 15, 2012— someone else was reading it while eating breakfast in a restaurant in Mumbai, India.

I know this because I found a receipt of coffee and bread inside. I also know that this person was not the owner of the paperback immediately before me.

In fact, the owner before me was not Indian at all, but Japanese.

I know this because in the book there are handwritten notes in Japanese —translations of English words with which the reader was unfamiliar.

Japanese being a language of characters, not letters, it is not easy to determine if the note writer was a man or a woman. But the care taken to write the translations neatly in the limited spaces available on each page indicates a woman’s hand clearly, and probably a university student, who would keep a dictionary at hand while reading a novel.

But why did she suddenly stop reading? The last translation in my paperback appears on Page 83, less than a third of the way through the novel. Did she give up because the book was proving too difficult? Or was there some other reasons?

Many a novel presents mysteries, all of which are solved by the end of the tale. The mysteries presented by my little paperback, however, remain mysteries, all expertly put into a well-structured story, not by a skillful writer, but this time by the numberless vagaries(变化莫测)of life itself.

【1】What can we learn about the novel?

A.It is about a world trip.

    B.It is well written.

C.It was written in an American restaurant.

D.It was first published in the 19th century.

【2】The author assumes the Japanese owner of the book was a woman based on ______.

    A.the pretty handwriting

B.the food written on the receipt

C.the good condition of the book

D.the effort taken in writing the notes

【3】Which of the following can best describe the author?

A.He is a great reader of historical fiction.

    B.He is a hard-working university student.

C.He is a productive writer with sensibility.

D.He is a careful observer with imagination.

【4】What’s the best title for the next?

    A.The tale of a Paperback

    B.Different Life Experiences

    C.Unsolved Mysteries of Life

    D.A Book’s Exciting Adventure

  • 29、   Kids in primary schools in Bellaire, Ohio, have something to sing about. For the past eight years, public primary schools in that town didn’t offer music classes. They didn’t have the money to pay for them. But the school district got some support to bring back music this school year.

Many school officials across the country say music classes get students excited about going to school. And studies have shown that music classes may boost brainpower. For example, researchers from the University of Southern California recently released the results of a fiveyear study. They found that the brains of 10and 11yearolds who learned to play a musical instrument developed faster than the brains of kids who didn’t.

Though most people aren’t against teaching music in schools, not everyone says it’s necessary. Many school officials argue (争论) that learning music means less time spent on maths, writing, and science, all of which may be more useful to students later in life.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

Music should be taught in school for the simple reason that it makes learning more fun. We have music classes at my school, and I love them!

Taking music lessons can also build character. In 2015, a research company called Grunwald Associates did a survey on music education. More than 60 percent of parents whose kids took music classes in school said their child became more focused (集中注意力的).

    —Noah Falcon, New Jersey

At my school, we don’t have music classes. I think that’s OK because it gives us more time to focus on main subjects, like reading and maths. It’s more important to learn these subjects than it is to learn how to play an instrument or sing.

If someone wants to take music lessons, he or she can do it outside of school. Once I took a mariachi (墨西哥流浪乐队音乐) class after school, so it didn’t take time away from my other classes.

    —Sophia Salazar, California

1What change has happened in primary schools in Bellaire this year?

    A.Music classes are offered.

    B.The school year is shortened.

    C.Singing is allowed in schools.

D.Kids can get prizes if they learn music.

2What does the underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Create.

    B.Prevent.

    C.Increase.

    D.Discover.

3What does Noah Falcon think of music education?

    A.It is unnecessary.

    B.It is very important.

C.It is a waste of money.

    D.It is easy to continue.

4What can we learn about Sophia Salazar?

A.She didn’t like music at all.

    B.Music brings her more fun.

    C.Music helps her keep focused.

D.She took a music class after school.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following paragraphs by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once.

Note that there is one word more than you need.

    A Bad Idea

Think you can walk, dive, take phone calls, e-mail and listen to music at the same time? Well, New York's new law says you can't. And you'll be 1 $S100 if you do it on a New York City street.

The law went into force last month, following research and a(n) 2number of accidents that involved people using electronic gadgets when crossing the street.

Who's to3 ? Scientists say that our multitasking abilities are limited.

"We are under the impression that our brain can do more than it often can," says Rene Marois, a neuroscientist in Tennessee. “But a major limitation is the inability to4on two things at once".

The young people are often considered the great multitaskers. However, an Oxford University research suggests this idea is open to question. A group of 18-to 21-year-olds and a group of 35-to 39-year-olds were given 90 seconds to translate5into numbers, using a simple code. The younger group did 10 percent better when not interrupted. But when both groups were interrupted by a phone call or a(n) 6message, the older group matched the younger group in speed and 7.

It is difficult to measure the productivity8by multitaskers. But it is probably a lot. Jonathan Spire, chief analyst at Basex. a business-research firm, estimates the cost of interruptions to the American economy at nearly $650 billion a year.

The9is based on surveys with office workers. The surveys conclude that 28 percent of the workers' time was spent on interruptions and10time before they returned to their main tasks.
