二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   At your next meeting, wait for a pause (停顿) in conversation and try to measure how long it lasts.

Among English speakers, it is probable that it will be a second or two at most. But while this pattern may be universal, our understanding of silence differs greatly across cultures.

What one culture considers a confusing or embarrassing pause may be seen by others as a valuable moment of thought and respect for what the last speaker has said. Research in Dutch (荷兰语) and also in English found that when a silence in conversation lasts four seconds, people start to feel uneasy. However, another study of business meetings found that Japanese people are happy with silences of 8.2 seconds—nearly twice as long as in Americans’ meetings.

In Japan, it is recognized that the best communication is when you don’t speak at all. It’s already a failure to understand each other by speaking because you’re repairing that failure by using words.

In the US, it may originate from the history of colonial (殖民地的) America as a crossroads of many different races (种族). When you have difference, it’s hard to reach common understanding unless you talk and there’s understandably a kind of anxiety unless people use words to establish a common life. This applies also to some extent to London.

However, when there’s more homogeneity, perhaps it’s easier for some kinds of silence to appear. For example, among your closest friends and family it’s easier to sit in silence than with people you’re less well know.

1Which of the following people might have the longest silence in conversation?

    A.The Dutch

    B.The American

    C.The English

    D.The Japanese

2What might the Japanese agree with in a conversation?

A.Speaking more gives the upper hand.

B.Speak out what you have in your mind.

C.Great minds think alike without words.

D.The shorter talking silence, the better.

3What can we learn from the text?

A.A four second silence in conversation is universal.

B.It’s hard for American to reach a common agreement.

C.English speakers are more talkative than Japanese speakers.

D.The closer we and our family are, the easier the silence appears.

4What does the underlined word “homogeneity” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Similarity

    B.Difference

    C.Disagreement

    D.Misunderstanding

  • 27、   Would you carry around an electronic ID, not in your pocket, but in your body? Does this idea scare you or make you feel safe?

The first computer ID chip(芯片) that could be planted under a person’s skin might be marketed very soon.

Developed by Applied Digital, an American technology company based in Florida, the device(发明物) could meet the need for public security(安全) after the September 11 attacks.

For airports, nuclear power plants(核电站) and other high security facilities, the immediate effects are obvious.

The technology could help put an end to false ID cards, because it would be difficult to remove and copy a tiny computer chip. The chip is as small as a grain of rice.

The technology would also allow satellites to track a person’s every movement and store medical records.

These uses are already attracting interest for tasks like fighting against kidnappings(绑架), or helping with medical operations.

But some people are afraid of the loss of privacy(隐私).

“You always have to think about what the device could be used for tomorrow,” said Lee Tien, a senior privacy lawyer in the United States.

“At first a device is used for applications we all agree are good, but then it slowly starts being  used for more than it was intended,” he said.

However, Applied Digital says it will soon apply for government permission for the device. It says that the first people to use the chip will be volunteers.

Getting the implant(需移植的芯片) would go something like this:

A person or company buys the chip from Applied Digital for about US $ 200. And the company encodes(编码) it with the desired information.

The customer then takes the chip to their doctor, who can plant it with a large needle.

The device has no power supply, rather it is activated(使活动, 使运行) by a scanner(扫描仪)  running across the skin above it. Without a scanner, the chip cannot be read.

Even with the privacy concern, some are already eager to use the product.

Jell Jacobs from Florida hopes to become the first buyer of the chip to store his medical records. Suffering from a serious illness, he wants to make sure doctors can help him quickly.

Eight Latin American companies have also shown interests in the device. It could help to find any tourists who are kidnapped.

1The best title for the passage is _______.

A.Why Is the New ID Necessary B.Getting a New Kind of ID Under Your Skin

C.An Advertisement for Chips D.Where to Buy the Chip

2Which of the following is true according to the text?

A.In some airports and factories such device is already being used.

B.The information on the chip can be read when it has its power supply.

C.The technology could help put an end to false ID cards.

D.The first computer ID chip has already come into the market.

3What is the advantage with the electronic ID according to the passage?

A.It can store people’s medical records and help with medical operations.

B.With this people will have no fear of losing privacy.

C.It’s cheap to buy and easy to get.

D.It is developed by Applied Digital in Florida.

4What can we learn about Jeff Jacobs?

A.He’s a worker in Applied Digital, a company in Florida.

B.He’s a doctor who helps plant tile chips on people.

C.He fears if he uses the chip he will lose privacy.

D.He’s suffering from a serious illness and wants to buy the chip.

  • 28、   A video of a three-year-old girl being kicked by her own mother during a photo shot went viral on Thursday, indicating China’s underperformance in regulating the emerging child modeling industry.

The girl, known as Niu Niu, was physically abused (虐待) by her mother in several videos. The videos have annoyed Chinese media and Internet users alike. Many netizens and scholars call for local authorities to carry out further investigations into possible child abuse.

In response to the public outcry (强烈抗议), Niu Niu’s mother issued an apology via Sina Weibo on Thursday, condemning accusations of abuse. She noted that she was merely guiding her daughter for better shots and the girl is well looked after.

Despite her apology, many E-shops which used Niu Niu’s images for brand promotion have canceled their cooperation with the mother, while over 110 well-known child garment shops on Taobao have signed up for a campaign to provide better protection for child models.

“It is necessary to adopt comprehensive laws and regulations to further protect the kids, preventing their parents and companies from exploiting them,” Fang Zhiqing, a lawyer and child protection expert, said.

Niu Niu is not alone. In Zhili, a small town in Zhejiang province, thousands of children from across China are taken here by their parents to seize the chance of fame. With a population of 450,000, Zhili has over 13,000 manufacturers of child clothing. In 2017.the town earned over 7 billion yuan by selling clothing for children online, thus providing opportunities for child models.

“China’s current advertisement law isn’t workable with respect to the industry of child modeling, as it lacks clear regulatory measures and clear legal punishment.” Fang added, “It is important to issue new laws which regulate child modeling.”

    1What caused the public outcry?

A.A girl being physically abused by her mother.

    B.Problems in Chinese advertising industry.

C.Several cases of child abuse in recent China.

D.Videos showing how child models work.

2What happened after the public outcry?

A.Local authorities have thoroughly looked into Niu Niu’s case.

B.Niu Niu’s mother admitted abusing her daughter.

C.Shops stopped their cooperation with the mother.

D.The online sales of child clothing are increasing.

3Which opinion may Fang Zhiqing agree with?

A.China’s current advertisement law isn’t workable.

B.There are too many child models in China.

C.New economic laws should be issued in China.

    D.China should regulate child modeling.

  • 29、   It was 3:21 a.m. when nine-year-old Glenn Kreamer awoke to the smell of burning. Except for the cracking (爆烈声) of flames somewhere below there was not a sound in the two-storey house at Baldwin Long Island.

With his father away on night duty at a local factory, Glenn was worried about the safety of his mother, his sister Karen, 14 and his 12-year-old brother Todd. He ran downstairs through the smoke-filled house to push and pull at Karen and Todd until they sat up. Then he helped each one through the house to the safety of the garden. There, his sister and brother, taking short and quick breaths and coughing, fell down onto the lawn.

The nine-year-old boy raced back into the house and upstairs to his mother’s room. He found it impossible to wake her up. Mrs. Kreamer, a victim of the smoke, was unconscious, and there was nobody to help Glenn carry her to the garden. But the boy stayed calm and, as a fireman said later, "acted with all the self-control of a trained adult."

On the bedroom telephone, luckily still working, Glenn called his father and, leaving Mr. Kreamer to telephone the fire brigade and ambulance service, got on with the task of saving his mother.

First he filled a bucket with water from the bathroom and threw water over his mother and her bed. Then, with a wet cloth around his head he went back to the garden.

He could hear the fire engine coming up, but how would the firemen find his mother in the smoke-filled house where flames had almost swallowed up the ground floor?

Grasping firmly a ball of string (线) from the garage, Glenn raced back into the house and dashed upstairs to his mother’s room. Tying one end of the string to her hand, he ran back, laying out the string as he went, through the hall and back out into the garden.

Minutes later he was telling fire chief John Coughlan, "The string will lead you to mother." Mrs. Kreamer was carried to safety as the flames were breaking through her bedroom floor.

1Why did Glenn run downstairs first?

A.He wanted to find out what was happening.

B.He was worried about his mother’s safety.

C.He wanted to save his sister and brother.

D.He went to see if his father had come back from work.

2Who called the fire brigade and ambulance service?

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835-April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which provided the 1 for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. After an apprenticeship with a printer, he worked as a typesetter and 2 articles to the newspaper of his older brother, Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his singular lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In 1865, his 3 story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention, and was even translated into 4 Greek.
