  • 26、The effect of having no friends

A study has found that people who are lonely have more physical and mental health problems than those who feel connected with others. It affects your health in four ways.

You are more likely to be depressed (抑郁的).

1 Researchers have shown that when you’re lonely, brain hormones associated with stress such as cortisol (皮质醇) become active, which can cause depression. The previous research has found that the more positive social interactions (交流) people with depression have, the more improvement in symptoms they experience.

    2

Research has shown you’ll eat less healthily if you frequently dine alone. Researchers have pointed out that if you are cooking for other people, you are more likely to prepare a healthier meal that contains a range of foods—meat, starch (淀粉) and vegetables. 3 People who are lonely are also more likely to be physically inactive.

You are more likely to suffer from heart disease.

Research has repeatedly shown lonely people have a higher risk of heart disease, and it’s for many reasons. Since they don’t have social support, they’re more likely to be affected by stress. 4 If they’re lonely, they’re less likely to be physically active or eat properly. If they don’t feel well, they’re much less likely to go to see a doctor.

    5

Research has found that loneliness can affect the immune (免疫的) system. People who are lonely produce more inflammation (发炎)related proteins in response to stress than folks who feel more socially connected. Inflammation is linked to numerous health conditions including heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease.

A.You are likely to eat more food.

B.You had better get on well with others.

C.You are less likely to take care of yourself.

D.You could have a weaker system to fight off disease.

E.This increases the possibility of getting heart disease.

F.Otherwise, you’re just throwing something together for yourself.

G.The more lonely you feel, the more likely you are to be depressed.

  • 27、   Consider the tomato: easy to grow, healthy to eat, tasty in just about any dish and pleasant to look at. And come late summer, in steady supply. Though you can find it during the coldest winter months,

August is the tomato's season to shine. Farmers' markets and stores are bursting with less known but tastier varieties, including purple cherries and big heirlooms.

"Heirlooms ripened on the vine() are the tastiest of all tomatoes," says Amy Goldman Fowler, author of The Heirloom Tomato. "I think their beauty is more than skin-deep." Heirloom seeds have been around for at least 50 years, often passed down from generation to generation. You may hear cherry or heirloom used to describe a tomato at hand, but there are many different kinds of tomatoes, and growers have fun giving fancy names to varieties: Mortgage Lifters, Beefsteaks, Oxhearts, Early Girls.

And all of them come with health benefits. Tomatoes are a good source of the antioxidant lycopene (抗氧化番茄红素), which is thought to help lower a person's risk for heart problems and cancer. Tomatoes also contain healthy vitamins A and C. For the best fruit, choose tomatoes with shiny, firm skin and a little give, and store them at room temperature away from direct sunlight. Keep them out of the fridge, since cold temperatures can affect the original taste.

"They satisfy something more than just taste," says Fowler. "Tomatoes feed your soul."

1In which season do tomatoes sell best?

    A. Spring. B. Summer.

    C. Autumn. D. Winter.

2What can you learn from the passage?

    A. Tomatoes are the tastiest vegetables.

    B. Direct sunlight helps to store tomatoes.

    C. Tomatoes go bad more quickly in the fridge.

    D. Heirlooms are tastier than the other tomatoes.

    3Why do tomatoes benefit people?

    A. They can produce most antioxidant lycopene. B. They may prevent some diseases.

    C. They can be used as medicine. D. They may make people's skin shiny.

4What does Amy Goldman Fowler think of tomatoes?

    A. They will survive in cold winter months. B. They are less known than other foods.

    C. They taste best but look ugly. D. They also make us pleasant.

  • 28、How to Make a Complaint in English

Most of us do not enjoy complaining. But sometimes we must do it to get a solution.1. An effective English complaint often has the following three steps.

    Explain the problem

To do it effectively, you must use polite and respectful language.2.For example, if you are at a restaurant and the server forgets to bring your drink, saying “You didn’t bring my drink” may be too direct. It may sound critical and cause the server to become defensive. So you can use phrases to politely explain your problem.

    State your feelings

This step is often not necessary.3. Some problems have easy and quick solutions. For example, politely telling people that they forgot something or overcharged you usually leads to a speedy solution. But imagine that you are receiving poor service.4. In these cases, you need to politely express how you feel.

    5

The third step is to ask for action to be taken on the problem. This is an important step. Depending on who the listener is, you or they may need to ask someone else to take action.

    A.Ask for action

    B.Blame the problem on them

    C.You should avoid complaining

D.It will depend on how bad the problem is

E.In English, polite language is usually indirect

F.Today,we will tell you how to make a complaint in English

G.Or,maybe there is a continuing problem in your apartment building
