24、   I was very happy to be with my family again. But I am a traveller by nature and after only two months I looked for another job as a ship's doctor. I left my wife and children with a nice new house and enough money for them to live comfortably. I was lucky that my wife is an excellent mother and can organize all the family alone.

And so on 20th June 1702 I set off for Surat, in India, on a ship called the Adventure. And indeed “adventure” was an appropriate (恰当的) name for that ship, and for everything that happened on that journey.

Surat is on the other side of the world and the first part of our journey went well. But when we sailed through the Indian Ocean there were some terrible storms. The winds were so strong that they sent our ship completely off course (偏离航线). We had no idea where we were.

Finally, when the storms stopped, we saw an island. We had no more drinking water so the captain sent me to find some fresh water on the island. I set off with some other men in a small boat. And when we arrived I explored the island by myself while the men looked for water.

That was a big mistake. When I returned there were no men and no boats! Then I saw them. Rowing desperately (绝望) back to our ship with an enormous giant following them in the sea! They were very frightened.

I ran as fast as I could in the opposite direction. I then climbed a big hill and when I looked around I saw fields and fields of very long grass. Then I saw other giants working in the fields.

"So this is my destiny," I told myself "On my last journey I was a giant on an island of tiny people and now I am a tiny person on an island of giants!" It was not a nice feeling.

I was desperate and hid behind an enormous tree. I had to think of a plan but at that moment one of the giants saw me.

"This is the end." I thought for the second time in my life, as the giant approached (靠近) .

"Why did I leave the comfort of my home and family to travel again?" I asked myself.

The giant bent down and picked me up and I felt like one of the tiny Lilliputians.

"Please don't hurt me," I called to the giant.

27、Between eight and nine o’clock in the morning, a dark leaden-colored mass is creeping over the sky towards the sun. Red zigzags(之字形) of lightning gleam here and there across it. Terenty comes out of the garden and, lifting high his long legs, begins striding (大步走) down the village street. He walks quickly without stopping or looking from side to side, as though he were shoved(推搡) from behind. Fyokla can hardly keep up with him.

The clouds have by now covered the sun, and soon afterwards there is not a speck of blue left in the sky. It grows dark. The first raindrops, big and heavy, leave dark dots on the dusty road. A big drop falls on Fyokla’s cheek and glides like a tear down her chin.

“The rain has begun,” mutters(嘟哝) Terenty, kicking up the dust with his bare, bony feet. “But that’s fine, Fyokla, old girl. The grass and the trees are fed by the rain, as we are by bread.”

As soon as the rain begins, the wind drops. The only sound is the patter(噼啪声) of the dropping rain. It runs down their necks and they soon get soaking wet. Their feet are covered with lumps of heavy, wet clay. It is slippery and difficult to walk, but Terenty strides on more and more rapidly. The weak little beggar-girl is breathless and ready to drop.

At last, they arrive at the woods, where they see Danilka, a little red-haired fellow of eight, leaning against a tree with one hand hidden in an old lime tree. The wood had broken at the edge of the hole and jammed Danilka’s hand. Terenty snaps off the broken piece, and the boy s hand, red but complete, is freed, much to Terenty’s relief.
