Bing Dwen Dwen, mascot of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, has become very popular, as its image of a fat and cute panda wrapped in a layer(层)of ice attracts millions of audiences and athletes at home and abroad.
Wearing a full-body transparent shell, with its head surrounded by an “ice ribbon” of five colored rings, the panda mascot looks like an astronaut. The panda is often regarded as a symbol of China. Its helmet(头盔)means the snow and ice of winter sports.
The name “Bing Dwen Dwen” is a combination(组合)of several meanings in the Chinese language, with “Bing” the Chinese word for “ice”,and “Dwen Dwen” meaning robust and lively. That’s also about the sports. The mascot became popular not only because of its design and special Chinese characteristics, but also for its cultural meaning and value.
The mascot was designed by a 14-member team led by Cao Xue, a professor from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. In order to make the image of Bing Dwen Dwen lively, Cao and his team visited Wolong National Nature Reserve in southwest China’s Sichuan to watch the pandas carefully. They found baby pandas’ heads and body ratio(比例)are different from that of adults, making them cuter. So, they improved the image based on the baby panda.
Consumers lined up for hundreds of meters to buy mascot-themed products outside the flagship store in Wangfujing Street on Sunday.
Beijing Winter Olympics organizers will increase product offerings, Zhao Weidong, a spokesman said Sunday in response to the rising need of the mascot.

22、One day a teacher entered her classroom and told her students about a surprise test. The students took their seats and waited for the test to begin. The teacher put a test paper on each student’s desk with the paper facing down. She then asked them to turn the paper over and begin.

The students did what they were told. At the end of class, the teacher took their tests and started reading their answers loudly. Each student tried to describe the black dot—its size, its position on the paper. After the professor finished reading, the class was quiet.
She started to explain. “Don’t worry. It’s not a real test. I only want you to think about something. All of you saw the black dot on this test and wrote about it, but no one wrote about the white area around the dot.”
“Imagine that this paper is your life. The white area is all of your life experiences , the black dot just stands for the bad things you’ve gone through. Life is filled with many things—loved ones, happy moments and so on. But we spend too much time thinking about the bad things.”
