四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、For thousands of years, people have lived with dogs. Ancient paintings on the walls of caves show people living with dogs. Almost a third of the homes in the United States and England have dogs, and these dogs come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

The largest dog in the world was a dog named Zorba. When Zorba, a mastiff, was seven years old in 1989, he was 94 centimeters (37 inches) tall. In other words, Zorba was more than half as tall as an adult man. At his largest, Zorba weighed more than a heavy weight boxer at 156 kilograms(343 pounds).

In comparison, the smallest bog was a Yorkshire terrier from England. This dog was only the size of a matchbox, measuring 7.1 centimeters(2.8 inches) tall and 9.5 centimeters (3.75 inches) from nose to tail. It weighed about half as much as a common book, and even a young child could easily pick it up with one hand. It passed away in 1945 when it was only two years old.

Some dogs are wonderful, not for their sizes, but for their brains. One incredible (难以制信的)dog is Endal, the companion (陪伴) of a man named Allen Parton who has used a wheelchair since a car accident in 1991.

In 2001, Parton was hit by a car while crossing a road with Endal, and thrown out of his chair. Endal quickly moved Parton into the recovery place, covered him with a blanket(毯子), and pushed his mobile phone close enough for him to reach. Then, once he saw that Parton was all right, Endal ran back and forth to a nearby hotel, barking until people came out to help.

Endal was rewarded for his bravery by being awarded a medal, and he has been the subject of a number of TV documentaries.

【1】Why do people have dogs as pets?

    A. Dogs used to live in caves.

    B. Dogs are easy to be taken care of.

    C. Dogs come in all shapes and sizes.

    D. The passage doesn’t tell us about it .

【3】The world’s smallest dog weighed half as much as_________ according to the passage.

    A. a child’s hand   B. a matchbox

    C. a common book   D. a car

【4】What is the right order that Endal saved Parton according to the passage?

    a. Moving Parton into a recovery place.

    b. Running back and forth to a nearby hotel.

    c. covering Parton with a blanket.

    d. Pushing Parton’s phone close for him to reach.

  • 25、   Once, a man sold his well to a farmer. Next day when the farmer went to get the water from that well, the man didn't agree. He said, "I sold you the well, not the water, so you can't get the water."

The farmer became very sad. And he came to the judge in the office alone. He described everything and asked for help. The judge called up the man who sold the well to the farmer. He asked, "Why don't you let him use the water of the well? You have sold the well to him." The man replied, "I have sold the well to the farmer, not the water. That means he can't get the water from the well."

The judge smiled and said, "OK, as long as you have sold the well to him, and you say the water is yours, then you can't keep your water in the farmer's well. Either you pay for the farmer to keep your water, or you must take it out of his well right away."

The man understood that his idea couldn't work. The story tells us we can't cheat others, though we are smart. We can't win in the end.

1A farmer bought a well from a man.

2The man went to the judge in the office alone.

3The man thought the farmer could get the water from the well at first.

4The judge asked the man to pay for the farmer to keep his water.

  • 26、   The lift door opened slowly when we got to the top floor of the Eiffel Tower. My mom rushed out. She wasn’t interested in the views (风景). She just wanted air. If there’s one thing that scares my mom more than cramped (狭小的) spaces, it’s heights. When I caught up with her, she was pressing her body against a huge steel girder (). I couldn’t help but laugh.

“What?” she said. “I… I’m having a great time.” “Yeah, I can tell. Let’s go,” I said.

But she couldn’t move because she was so scared. Maybe we should have taken the Eiffel Tower off our “to do” list.

“I know, Mom!” I shouted. “We can walk all the way down.” Before she could think about it, I took her arm and led her over to the stairs.

Hoping to make her relaxed, I pulled out our Pairs guidebook and called out facts about the Tower as we made our way down: There are a total of 1,665 steps; the Tower is repainted every 7 years…

Finally, after 30 minutes, we got down. I pushed at the gate. It didn’t move. I pushed again, still no movement. I tried again and again. Out of breath, I would almost cry. I hated being locked in!

“Qu’est-ce que c’est la probleme?” a young French guard asked on the other side of the gate. I didn’t understand French. That made me panic (惊慌失措) more. I pushed at the door really hard—still nothing happened.

The guard smiled now. He pointed up and said in English, “The sign. Read it.”

I saw a sign above the gate. It said: “Tirer.” I looked at the guard. What did that mean? The guard told me, “It says, ‘Pull.’ ”

“I talk to him all the time,” says a seventy-year-old lady. “W5I do, he’ll stay with me. When I’m watching TV, he’ll stay in my arms until he wants down. He has a mind of his own.”

The scientists say they have some a6over live dogs, especially for old people.

Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by e7walking it or playing with it.

“At the beginning, it was b8that no one would like the robot dog because it was metal and not furry.” Beck says. “But it’s amazing how quickly we have given up that belief.” “Hopefully, down the road, these robot p9could become more valuable health helpers.   They will r10their masters’ data of health conditions. They may even one day help older people in many other ways.”
