  • 24、   Hobbies are also a way of making friends. Starting a new school term is always exciting. It is a chance to see your friends again. But the most exciting of all is that the new term is a chance to take up new hobbies. It is common in Britain for students to take up new hobbies after the Christmas holidays.

Most schools offer different kinds of hobby classes. Students take them in their free periods or after school. You have to pay for some classes and other classes are free. For example, I once took a free Wednesday evening gymnastics class my school offered. But when I learnt how to play the drums, my parents had to pay for the lessons.

The most popular extra classes at my school were piano lessons and drama club. Both classes offered exams that students could take. Students with many hobbies sometimes felt more stressed than those without any. But the students with hobbies left school with many extra skills.

You just need to make clear what you are looking at. “I spend about half an hour reading newspapers every day,” said 15-year-old Gao Ming from Beijing. “I’m interested in things happening at school.” School news is just one kind of news story in newspapers. There’s also world news from international problems to pop stars. Read the newspaper carefully, we’ll find different types of articles on the pages.

News stories — these stories are about events. Reporters try to show all points of a story to help readers understand what happened. Reporters try to speak to as many people as possible. When we read them, we learn more about the facts, not the writers’ ideas.

Go to “Speak Out” on Page Two for an example of opinion writing in Teenagers.

Once a circle lost a piece of its own. The circle wanted to be whole, so it went around, looking for its m1 piece. But because it was not complete , it could only roll  ()  very slowly. It enjoyed the flowers and the sunshine a2the way. It talked with worms. It found lots of different pieces, but n3 of them fit. So it left them all by the side of the road and kept on l4 for the lost piece. Then one day the circle found a piece that fit p5. Sometimes we are perfect when we lose some thing. A man who o8  everything is poor in some ways. He will never have hopes, dreams or something better. He will never know some one loves him or someone is giving him something he has always wanted or never had.

We couldn't be perfect. But we must be brave e9 to love, strong enough to forgive, kind enough to s10 happiness with others and clever enough to know there is enough love around us and then we can always have a wonderful time in our life.
