1、I think it is important for children to learn how to do chores and help their parents with housework. It is not enough to just get good grades at school. 61Children these days depend on their parents too much. They are always asking, 62“你能给我拿一下这个吗?”or “Could you help me with that?” Doing chores helps to develop children’s independence and teaches them how to look after themselves. 63It also helps them to understand the idea of fairness. Since they live in one house with their parents, they should know that everyone should do their part in keeping it clean and tidy. Our neighbors’son got into a good college but during his first year,64他不知道怎样照顾自己.As a result, he often fell ill and his grades dropped.65.The earlier kids learn to be independent, the better it is for their future.

25、 Los Angeles is known as a driving town. As the Missing Persons’ song goes, “Nobody walks in L.A.” In the city, people are so busy driving to work. Even for the usual shopping, it’s hard to see people walking in the street.
Chuck McCarthy wants to change it! The actor gave up the job of earning money. And he has a new special job now—“people walker”. The idea for the business came when he wanted to make some more money. “I thought about walking dogs at first, but I didn’t want to pick up dog poop(粪便). That’s less interesting.” Many customers need the special service because they are lonely, or they enjoy the feeling of being safe. “My words are full of friendship and warmth, but I can tell you that they are conversations, not one-sided monologue(独白).”
Just walking and talking and knowing that someone is listening can be helpful for most people. They were very pleased with McCarthy’s job because he listened to them. He walks with others for $7 per mile (around 50 yuan per kilometer).
McCarthy is happy to lend his ear to the people of L.A. and listen to what they have to say. He now has his own company that offers this walking service. He has about 35 walkers working for him. Would you like to try this service?

26、 The winner of the fifth season of the China Central Television's Chinese Poetry Conference (中国诗词大会) was shown on Feb 9. Peng Min, who has fallen at the final hurdle twice before, finally won the crown (王冠) for himself.
The competitors vary in age, from teenagers to adults. Peng, 36, an associate senior editor (副主编) of a poetry magazine, is one of the most familiar (熟悉的) faces of the show. He can recite around 1,000 poems.
With a master's degree in literature, Peng is always the hot favorite to win the prize, but, surprisingly, he's lost two finals in a row-the second season he lost to a 16-year-old high school student, Wu Yishu, and in the third season he was beaten by deliveryman (送货员) Lei Haiwei.
He cried after losing the season three final, “I realized that if I compete and fail again, at least I've tried, but if I don't sign up, that means I'm more of a failure because I'm afraid of trying. Therefore, when season five came around, I decided to give it another go,” Peng recalls.
The season five final came down to Peng and 11-year-old Han Yaxuan-again he was facing a much younger rival. This time, though, there was to be no mistake and victory was finally his.
“I want to tell people who have a similar experience that, even though you go through all kinds of misfortune (不幸的) or difficulties, as long as you are brave enough to look up, there will always be a light in the sky to guide you out of the darkness,” Peng said in his speech. “Thousands of years later, all of our shadows will vanish, only the beauty of poems will last.”

“Here” is a summer camp that’s only an hour from New York City—but a world away. This camp is run by the Fresh Air Fund(基金会). Since 1877, the fund has helped poor children from New York City spend summers in the country. Each year, over one thousand children, age 6—18,take part in the program. Some stay at the camp; others live with host families. The fund pays all money.
The camp is for 8 to 15-year-olds. At camp, children can learn about the stars, see deer and cows and other animals, and go hiking, fishing, and of course swimming. The children learn responsibility(责任) by helping out with chores like making beds and waiting on tables. They also learn a lot from teachers, who are often college students from around the United States and from other countries.
Host families from thirteen states and Canada offer to have children spend the summer with them. Many of these families have their own children. The visiting children become part of the family. They go with the family on picnics, to the pool or beach, and on trips. The children are from 6 to 12 years old when they make their first visit, and most are invited back. 29、 If you look around the streets of London, you'll see the many methods people use to move around. Whether ifs a way to work, a trip to the shops, or a sightseeing trip, there are people on buses, the underground, cars, motorbikes, bicycles and even roller skates. The roads are already ______ : and now there's a new addition: electric, or "e-scooters".
This traditional children's vehicle has become more welcomed over the years. And now, with a small electric motor, it's become a cheap and easy way of ______ . Scooting around town can be fun and doesn't need much effort, so they're becoming increasingly welcomed in cities around the world. But following some serious accidents caused by an electric scooter in the UK, questions are being asked about their safety and ______ traffic laws should be changed.
Some scooter riders have been seen on pavements; others on the road jumping red traffic lights, adding to traffic jams on the road. In the UK, the law says that riding one on the public highway or pavement is not ______ . Riders now face a £300 punishment and six points on their driving license for doing so. But, still e-scooters can be seen ______ . And now users are calling on rules to be changed.
The UK government is looking at how safely they can be used on the road and is examining the law again. But the official said, "It is an ______ product. We know there is need among people. There are dangers in riding a two-wheeled scooter. Some of them can drive at high speed, over 30mph. They sometimes only have one brake (刹车) and no lights. It seems more work needs to be done to give e-scooters a safe and right space to travel in.
