四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Big data (大数据) is a lot of sets of information that are put together so they can be used by a computer program. The computer program looks for different kinds of answers or patterns in the data. Big data can have different kinds of information from many sources, such as information that comes from schools, social media sites, companies and governments. One set of data can have people’s names and addresses. Another set can have what they like, where they go to school, and how much time they spend on the computer.

Big data can be used in many ways. The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. This information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Some schools use big data to understand which children may need extra help in class. The teacher can then give certain students more help or support so those students can succeed in school. Companies use big data, too. It helps them understand who buys their products. For example, one company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice cream.

Big data can be used for good reasons. Some hospitals use big data to predict (预测) if a baby who is born too early will get sick. The hospital can then take extra steps to take care of that baby so he, she does not get sick. Big data can also be used for bad reasons. It can be used to predict which kinds of people are likely to break the law or hurt others, even if they have not done anything wrong.

How can big data be used for good and bad things? It is because the computer programs used to look at big data and understand it are written by people. People think a certain way. Because they think a certain way, they build a model of those ideas. These ideas are then used to look at the data. Sometimes, these ideas are helpful for people or businesses. Other times, bad ideas can cause problems for certain groups of people.

1What is the first paragraph about?

A.What big data is and how it is used.

B.Why we can use big data in a number of ways.

C.Where important data is collected and stored.

D.What big data is and how it is collected.

2How does the writer show that big data is useful from the reading?

A.Big data is widely used in every field.

B.Big data seldom brings any harm to people.

C.Everyone can get information from big data easily.

D.People can make certain right decisions according to big data.

3What can we infer from the reading?

A.If there is plenty of information, it is called big data.

B.Big data provides any information for the government.

C.We should make full use of big data to serve the society.

D.Big data only collects the latest information from the world.

4The overall tone (总基调) of this reading is ________.

A.sad and personal B.personal and scientific

C.informative but silly D.scientific and informative

    Shut Up Zoos, Not Animals

You may think that visiting zoos is harmless fun, but you're wrong because zoos are just prisons for animals. The difference is that prisoners get out after a few years! Animals in cages look bored and sad. After all, we all know what an elephant looks like, and we've seen them on TV. So why make animals hurt by shutting them up for our fun?

    Shut up the zoos instead!

I partly agree. But some zoos aren't there for fun. I've just got back from Jersey Zoo. It saves endangered animals and feeds them. Then it returns the babies to the wild. Not all zoos are the same, you know.

Posted by: Susan on May 8, at 20:55

Quite agree! Every time I go to the zoo, I never look into the poor animals' eyes! Kept in the small and smelly cages, they look so lonely. Hope one day they will return to nature, where they can live happily and freely with their family.

Posted by: Tony on May 9, at 21:05

  • 26、Dear Liz,

My stay in Thailand has certainly been fantastic in my life.

Life is busy and exciting. Bangkok is just like any other big city with a population of 10 million and heavy traffic. I’m very lucky because my host family is in a nice quiet area outside the city. There are Mr and Mrs Phairat, their son Sanan, who is 18, the daughter Chinda, who is 16, and Grandpa and Grandma.

I go to an international school with Sanan and Chinda. The school teaches about 70 percent in English, and 30 percent in Thai. I’ve learned some spoken language, but Thai writing is very difficult. The cooking lesson is my favourite. I’m learning all about Thai food and culture. People don’t use chopsticks here, but spoons and forks. When I come back, I’m going to cook you a real Thai meal.

Last weekend we visited some temples. We also drove to Pattaya beach near Bangkok. I thought it was great. But Sanan and Chinda say that next month they’re taking me to Phuket Island. The beaches there are even more beautiful. The month after next, we’re going to travel to Mr Phairat’s hometown in the north of Thailand. The Phairats own land there, and they have two elephants. I’m going to ride those elephants and even wash them. Sanan and Chinda say it’s really fun.

I’m amazed by everything in this country, especially by the elephants. Elephants are an important part of Thai culture and way of life. They have been a traditional symbol of Thailand for many years in times of war and peace. In the seventh century, a Thai king trained 20,000 elephants for battle (战斗).

I’ll tell you all about my Thai boxing (拳击) lessons next time I write.

    Yours

    Mandy

  • 27、Earlier this year, China achieved a new milestone in space exploration. On Jan 3, Chang’e 4 became the first space probe  in history to successfully land on the far side of the moon, People’s Daily reported.

From Earth, we can only see one side of the moon. The other side has been a mystery. Scientists have long wondered what lies on this side of the moon.

Chang’e 4 has sent back photos of the far side of the moon. It is also being used to carry out experiments, such as growing seeds in a low-gravity environment. The data collected from these experiments could be used to help us build a base on the moon in the future.

The success of the Chang’e 4 mission is a major achievement for China’s space program. It marks a new stage in China’s deep space exploration, said Wu Yanhua, deputy head of China National Space Administration.

China launched its lunar exploration program in 2004, naming it Chang’e. Chinese scientists set three goals – “orbiting , landing and sample returning” – referring to launching probes that could circle around the moon, touch down on its surface and bring lunar materials back to Earth.

Chang’e 4 has realized the second goal. The third will be achieved during the Chang’e 5 mission , which is set to take place before the end of this year, China Daily reported.

Following the success of the Chang’e missions, Chinese scientists are looking even farther into our solar system . China’s first Mars mission is expected to be carried out by 2020, Wu said.

In addition to the first-ever soft landing on the far side of the moon, the Chang’e 4 mission has achieved many other firsts. One of them is international cooperation and joint exploration. The experiments will provide valuable data for the scientists .

    1What hasn’t Chang’e 4 done so far?

    A. It has built a base on the moon

    B. It has landed on the far side of the moon.

    C. It has carried out experiments on the moon.

    D. It has taken photos of the far side of the moon.

2What does the underlined “it” refer to in Paragraph 4?

    A. The Chang’e 4 probe. B. A base on the moon in the future.

    C. China’s space program. D. The success of the Chang’e 4 mission.

    3What is Chang’e 5 expected to do?

    A. Circle around the moon. B. Land on the surface of the moon.

    C. Bring lunar materials back to Earth. D. Send people to the moon.

4What can we infer from the story?

    A. Chang’e 4 has discovered the secrets of the far side of the moon.

    B. China’s space exploration program started 15 years ago.

    C. China has not launched any space probes to Mars so far.

    D. Chang’e 5 will be China’s last lunar exploration program.
