  • 25、   Students from two schools, The City School in Nigeria and Heathland School in the UK, recently took part in a project to compare their education and find out about student life in a very different country. As expected, they found many differences but also a few things that are similar.

The City School is in a district just outside Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. The school is surrounded  (环绕) by big trees and grassy fields that the children use to play football on. Heathland School is in a quiet suburb not far from central Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.

Most of the 580 students at The City School are taught in pleasant one-storey yellow-brick buildings although some building work still needs to be done. Heathland School dates from the 1950s but some new facilities (设施) have been added recently.

Although The City School receives financial (财政的) help from the government, students still

have to pay school fees. It’s hard to find the money sometimes and quite a few parents struggle to keep their children in school. Unlike the Nigerian school, students at Heathland School only have  to buy their uniforms and pay for some extra activities.

Teachers and students at The City School are proud of their library and the science laboratory. They say that there’s not a school in the area that can match it. The school concentrates (专注于) on traditional subjects like Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry because this will make it easier for students to get into a good profession. Practical subjects like Farm Technology are also popular.

Heathland School recently became a performing arts college. This means that in addition to subjects like English and Mathematics, the school also offers lessons in Dance, Drama and Music  as choices for all students. There is a new dance studio which can also be used as a theatre.

  • 26、If you’re in a hard time, a tiny thing may be the greatest help for you. That’s touch. Touch is one of the most important of our five senses. It is one of the first senses we develop. One of the most commonly accepted forms of touch among people is also one of the first experiences we have in the world---A hug!

There is no better way to understand the importance of hugs than to lose them. For those who have experienced the loss of hugs, you will know how important they are to share.

A recent research has shown that when people hug, the brain releases the chemical which increases our willingness to trust and reduces fear. It has also shown that hugs are great for your heart.

In 1995, a pair of newly born twins was being cared for in hospital. While one of the twins seemed quite healthy, her sister was not. After trying different medical treatments, the nurse on duty, Gayle Kasparian, placed the twins in bed together. The twins immediately snuggled (依偎) up to each other. As one placed her arm around the other, the weak baby became better gradually. How great the power of a hug is!

The need for hugs doesn’t disappear as we grow older, though it seems we are less willing to give them. Research on people of all ages has proven that a hug is necessary for physical and emotional health.

Without hugs we can become sad. A hug provides safety and gentleness. A hug provides us with social contact, a sense of health and a feeling of importance and belonging.

1The underlined word "they" in the second paragraph refers to __________.

    A. touches   B. people   C. hugs   D. experiences

2The story of the twins tells us ___________.

    A. twins should be placed in bed together   B. the power of a hug is great

    C. twins can look after each other well   D. medical treatments are important

3Which of the statements is TRUE according of the passage?

    A. A hug is the only form of touch among people.

    B. The loss of hugs can make them more important.

    C. Hugs can get people to trust each other more

    D. We don’t need hugs when we grow older.

4The best title of the passage can be __________.

    A. The great importance of Hugs   B. The different ways of Hugs

    C. The traditional cultures of Hugs   D. The interesting stories of Hugs

  • 27、   Good evening, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends!

Thank you all for coming on this very special day for every student on this stage. I know how proud you must be. As we have grown over the years, there are many steps and stages we all have gone through from learning our shapes and colors, to getting our first kiss in middle school, or how we explained to our parents why we skipped school(逃课)because the headmaster called home. Many of us may think, "This is as good as it gets!" but the future holds a bigger plan for all of us. We will make mistakes along the way, but the key is to learn from our mistakes and never give up. So good luck and congratulations to the class of 2019. We did it!

As a child, I learnt how to make paper masks from newspapers and old magazines. Later I used coloured cardboard. Making masks seemed like a popular art activity. After we made the masks, my classmates and I would put them on and pretend to be people that we were not. By hiding our faces b 【1】 the masks, it did not seem ridiculous to pretend to be an old man or a baby. Immediately, the mask helped us to step into the shoes of a 2  character.

A mask allows a person to take on different characters, to pretend and make-believe. Have you ever w   3 what the actual face of the clown at the circus is like? The clown’s mask, with white smiling mouth and the round red cheeks, covers whatever the clown r   4  looks like.

Masks can also be used to hide what we do not want people to see. For example, the Phantom of the Opera, tells the story of a man who fell in l   5 with a beautiful woman. However, one side of his face was ugly and terrible to show anyone. Thus, he wore a mask to hide that part of his face.

Adults, more than children wear different masks every day. These are not actual masks like the types that are made in art classes in schools. These masks refer to the person’s ability to hide his real thoughts and feelings. He will behave in different ways no matter what he is actually feeling i 6 . Sometimes, we will put on a happy face even though we are s 7 . We wear masks because we do not want people whom we do not know well to know what we are actually thinking and feeling.
