If you meet a British person in the street, it is very likely that he or she will apologize whether it is his or her fault (过错)or not.
It seems that Britain is becoming a nation where everyone is saying sorry. Almost each person says sorry about eight times each day—and one in eight people apologizes as many as 20 times a day.
As you may have seen, the British apologize more often than members of other cultures. Research shows that in many cases, people’s love of saying sorry in Britain goes a little further than it does for Americans. For example, about 15 British people would say “sorry” while only 10 from the US would do this if they sneezed, if they corrected someone’s mistake or if someone knocked into them.
In the old days, “sorry” was used to express regret and sadness for having done something wrong. But now British people use the expression as a way of showing good manners. For example, they might say “sorry” instead of “excuse me”, “pardon”, “what” or “whatever”.
People in Britain also use sorry when they share the same feelings with others—so they might say “sorry about the rain”.
However, British people’s use of “sorry” may make things very confusing and difficult for foreigners who are not familiar with their ways. But actually, people in Britain pay much attention to the feelings of others. This is the reason why they apologize every day.
【1】What does the passage mainly talk about?

25、 Polar bears(北极熊) are in great danger. And human beings are possibly the cause of the danger. As we burn gas to produce electricity or get us around town in our cars and trucks, we create tons of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳). This is causing global warming.
Polar bears need sea ice to live because the ice is their hunting ground. The bears’ main source of food is the meat of seals(海豹). These animals come to surface holes in the ice to breath. It is there that the polar bears catch the seals. Without any ice, there is nowhere for bears to hunt. The seals hardly come onto the land and spend their time out on the sea ice.
In recent years, the seal ice has disappeared in the Arctic during the late summer. This is dangerous for the polar bears, as they depend almost only on seals for food. Unlike brown and black bears, polar bears do not hibernate(冬眠) during the winter. Only female polar bears will go into a “little house” and stay for a long time if they are giving birth to baby bears.
It may be strange to think about, but winter is the time for polar bears to get food while summer is the time of hunger. The bears have got used to a cold world, and they need the low temperatures in order to stay alive. If the world continues to warm up and sea ice is absent for longer and longer periods of time, polar bears might unluckily go the way of dinosaurs (恐龙).
【1】Because of human beings, all the bears in the world are facing great danger now.
【2】If there are no seals on the sea ice, polar bears may have no food to eat.
【3】Unlike brown and black bears, only female polar hibernate in winter.
【4】Polar bears can get much more food in summer than in winter.
【5】Global warming may make polar bears die out in the future.
26、 Research proves that nearly half of the cancers diagnosed(诊断) in the UK each year—over 130,000 in total— are caused by life choices that include smoking, drinking and eating the wrong things.
Tobacco(烟草) is the biggest factor, causing 23% for cases in men and 15.6% in women, says the Cancer Research UK report. Next comes a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables in men’s diets, while for women it is being overweight. Lead author of the report, Professor Max Parkin, said: “Many people believe cancer is related to fate(命运) or ‘in the genes(基因)’, and that it depends on luck whether they get it or not. Looking at all the evidence, it is clear that around 40% of all cancers are caused by things we mostly have the power to change.”
For men, the best advice appears to be: stop smoking, eat more fruit and vegetables and cut down on how much alcohol you drink. For women, again, the best advice is to stop smoking, but also watch your weight.
In total, 14 lifestyle and environmental factors, such as where you live and the job you do, cause 134,000 cancers in the UK each year.
Some risk factors are well founded, such as smoking’s link with lung(肺) cancer. But others are less well realized. For stomach cancer, a fifth of the risk comes from having too much salt in the diet, data suggests. Some cancers, like mouth and throat cancer, are caused almost mainly by lifestyle choices. But others, like gall bladder cancer(胆囊癌), are largely not related to lifestyle.
Public Health Minister, Anne Milton, said: “By making small changes you can cut your risk of serious health problems—giving up smoking, watching you drink, getting more exercise and keeping an eye on your weight.”

27、 Getting paid to stay in bed all day sounds pretty good, but what if someone pays you $23,000 to stay in bed for two months? That’s the deal that a medical research team in France is offering to 24 volunteers.
The researchers are looking for volunteers to help them study the effects of weightlessness (失重状态) on the human body and find ways to stop problems. Lying in bed isn’t exactly the same as being weightless, but the effects are alike.
When astronauts spend a long time in an environment with no gravity (重力), their bodies change in many ways. After a couple of months, their hearts don’t beat as hard. Their muscles (肌肉) become smaller and weaker. Their bones may be broken more easily. There may also be changes in the astronauts’ immune systems and sleep habits.
The study will take 88 days. During the first two weeks, the volunteers will be tested to make sure of their levels of fitness. Then they will spend 60 days lying in bed with their heads lower than their bodies. They will have to do everything while lying down, including eating, brushing their teeth, and going to the bathroom. The rule is that they must have at least one shoulder touching the bed at all times. The last ▲ of the study will be spent trying to build up the volunteers’ fitness again.
Volunteers must be men between the ages of 20 and 45 who are in perfect health. The researchers has completed one study in April.
