  • 22、   Hi, I’m Tom. When I was about 12 years old, a girl in my class liked to point out my problems. I was too thinI wasn’t a good studentI talked too muchI was too proud and so on. At last, I became very angry and ran to my father.

He listened to me quietly. Then he asked, “Are these things true or not? Do you know what you are really like? Go and make a list of what she said and find the things that are true.”

I did as he told me. To my great surprise,I found that about half of the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin). But there were things I could and wanted to change. For the first timeI got a clear picture of myself.

I brought the list back to Dad. He didn’t take it. “That’s just for you, ” he said. “You know the truth about yourself better than anyone else. When people say something that is true about youyou should find it helpful.”

Our world is full of people who think they know your problems. Don’t be angry and feel hurt. Listen to them.

    根据短文内容,判断下列句子正(T)误(F)。

1Tom was angry because a girl in his class pointed out his problems.

2Tom’s father wasn’t interested in what he said.

3Tom found that about half of the things the girl said were true.

4Tom was very proud so he didn’t want to change at all.

5No matter what people say, you should think it helpful.

  • 23、All over the world, people are planting trees, caring for them, and learning about their value. A special day was set aside for planting trees.

Here in the United States, we call this tree-planting festival Arbor Day. In Japan, it is called Greening Week. In Israel it is called the New Year’s Day of the trees. Korea has a Tree-loving Week. Iceland has a Student’s Afforestation Day. This means “to change open land into forest”. People in India celebrate a National Festival of Tree Planting. Whatever people call this special time of year, they are saying that trees are important to us all.

Arbor Day began in the United States in 1872 in Nebraska. J.Sterling Morton, a newspaperman, knew how important trees were to the land so he began the idea. The state offered prizes to the groups and people who planted the most trees. On that first Arbor Day, the people of Nebraska planted more than one million trees. Today, Arbor Day is celebrated in all 50 states and around the world.

Why trees are so important to us all:

Trees give us shade(荫蔽) to keep us and our homes cool on hot summer days.

Trees give off oxygen(氧气) which you and I and animals need to breathe.

    Trees reduce(减少)noise pollution.

Trees provide a home and food for wildlife.

Trees are beautiful to look at, nice to listen to, fun to explore(探索), exciting to climb, and great to dream under.

1In Israel, the tree-planting festival is called _______.

    A. Arbor Day B. the New Year’s Day of the trees

    C. Greening Week D. Tree-loving Week

2We can infer from the article that the writer is from _______.

    A. America B. Japan C. Israel D. Iceland

3Which is true about the first Arbor Day?

    A. It began in Nebraska, India.

    B. A book writer first thought of the idea.

    C. The people who planted the most trees got the prize.

    D. J. Sterling Morton planted the most trees that day.

4What is the importance of trees?

    A. They keep us cool on hot days. B. They give off oxygen we breathe.

    C. They provide a home and food for wildlife. D. All of the above.

5According to the passage, which of the following is wrong?

    A. The trees can reduce noise.

    B. All over the world, all the people are planting trees.

    C. In America, Tree Planting Day is called Arbor Day.

    D. A newspaperman called on people to start Arbor Day.

  • 24、   What is celebrity (名人)? The word is mostly used for the famous people in the world of entertainment (娱乐图). Film stars and pop musicians become celebrities if they are very popular or successful. In most (but not all) cases, they become famous by being good at what they do. Their names and faces are familiar (熟悉的) to most people, who have either seen them on stage or read about them in the newspapers and magazines.

Over the years, other groups of people have become eligible for celebrity status (地位). These include sportsmen and sportswomen (such as footballers, tennis players and racing drivers), especially if their success makes them rich. Things are a little different now. It seems that anyone can become a celebrity, no matter whether they have any skills or talent. In fact some usual people have become famous just for performing badly on TV shows.

I do not envy (羡慕) these people. They may be rich. but they have no private (私有的) time and they are not that happy. No matter where they go, they will always be followed by some people, waiting for the opportunity to take an ugly picture that they can share with all over the world.

1What do we know about celebrities?

    A. They are all in the world of entertainment.

    B. Their being good at what they do makes them famous.

    C. They are all film stars and pop musicians.

    D. People don’t know their names and faces very well.

2What can we learn from the second paragraph?

    A. Sportsmen and sportswomen become famous easily now.

    B. Rich people become famous by performing badly on TV shows.

    C. It is much easier to be a celebrity now.

    D. One must have some skills if he wants to be a celebrity.

3The author does not envy the celebrities because ________.

    A. they are not very rich

    B. they are not known by many people

    C. they cannot do the things they are good at

    D. they do not have their private time to relax
