China and Western countries have something different in cultures about certain animals, but when it comes to pigs,we have the same idea—pigs are ugly, lazy and stupid.
Just look at some Chinese sayings such as “Boiling a dead pig” and “A pig looking in the mirror is still a pig.” And in English, there are some expressions like“Eating like a pig”and “Pigs might fly”.None of them are complimentary.
However, pigs have some good qualities(品质).They are even as smart as dogs and elephants. They have good memories. And they know whether people treat them well or not.
A UK cartoon,Peppa Pig is a most popular cartoon. The four members in the pig family teach children from all around the world about love, friendship and the value of family. And a Chinese cartoon film, the Adventures of Mc Dull,is also very famous. In the cartoon, the little pig,Mc Dull, has a heart of gold and always works hard towards his dreams. Most people want quick success, but Mc Dull is slow and patient, and not afraid of failing again and again.
Maybe when we talk about pigs next time,we should think of their good qualities.

Have you ever thought about keeping a pet goldfish? First you need to know how to keep it.
Get a fishbowl(鱼缸)— First get a fishbowl. Make sure the fishbowl is large enough for the goldfish to swim in. You should keep the fishbowl clean. Don't clean the fishbowl with soap. Hot water will clean it well.
Feed a goldfish — Goldfish eat almost any food. And you can also buy some special food for your goldfish in shops. Do not feed it too much food. Feed it as much as it can eat in three minutes one time.
Keep the water clean — Dirty water is not good for the health of the goldfish. If the water is dirty, the goldfish will easily get sick and may die. Change 25% of the water at least once a week. Never change all of the water because it includes something that your goldfish needs.

Most people of the world do not bow(鞠躬) to each other, but Japanese people do. They often bow when they meet. Men bow to men and to women. Men and women may also bow to each other, but usually only if they do not know each other. The younger, or more junior person bows more deeply than the older, or more senior person. The Japanese also bow to say “thank you” for something, or to apologize for something.
Schoolchildren do not bow to each other. Schoolgirls say goodbye to each other by waving their hands and saying “bye bye”. Schoolboys may copy Westerners and pat each other on the back or make “high fives” with their hands.
Many types of hand gestures(手势) have special meanings. You may see Japanese people put their thumb and index finger together to form a circle. This circle represents(代表) a coin and this gesture is the sign for money. If the Japanese want to indicate(表明) “me” without using words, they point to themselves by putting a finger to their noses, but Westerners would point to their chests. All young Japanese children learn to make a “V” sign with their middle and index fingers when someone takes their photograph. In Japan, this sign means “peace”, but in England this sign means “victory”. To say “No”, “I don’t know” or “I don’t understand”, Japanese people wave their hands in front of their faces, so it may be difficult to understand exactly what someone means.
Nodding of the head may also be confusing. When Japanese people nod their heads, it does not mean they agree with what you are saying. It means that they understand what you are saying. You must also be careful not to misunderstand a smile. When the Japanese smile they may not be happy, in fact they may be embarrassed(尴尬的).
As in most countries in the world, Japanese people use a lot of body language. Some of it you will understand and some of it will be new or confusing to you.

24、I travelled to Canada one summer with students from my French class. It was my first trip outside the United States. It was exciting because I could finally speak the foreign language I was learning and I could hear native speakers (说母语的人).
Canada is an excellent place to practice French for two reasons.
First, most people in the French-speaking part of Canada can speak both French and English. I can use French when I’m ready. There wouldn’t be much pressure. If I have something very important to communicate, they can understand me if I speak English.
Second, people there like it when you try to speak French, even if you only speak a little. They hold French in higher esteem (认为……更高贵) than English.
Interestingly enough, although I wanted to communicate in my newly learnt language, I soon found I could hardly use any of the words I have learnt when I tried to use them. We learnt the accent (口音) used in France, but the accent used in Canada is different from what we learnt. It sounded a little strange to me. And many words are completely different.
Although I didn’t get many opportunities (机会) to practice French in Canada, I’m still thankful for this experience.
【1】Where does the writer come from?
A. France. B. Canada.
C. The USA. D. The UK.
【2】Why did the writer think the summer trip was exciting?
A. Because travelling was his favorite hobby.
B. Because he could stay with his friends for a long time.
C. Because he could speak French and hear native speakers.

【3】There wouldn’t be much pressure for the writer to speak French in Canada because ______.
A. he liked talking to people in French
B. French-speaking people there are friendly
C. his friends would help him to communicate
D. people there could speak both English and French
【4】The writer talked about ______ difference(s) between French used in France and Canada in the passage.
A. one B. two C. three D. four

A. The writer spoke French very well in Canada.
B. The writer was thankful for his trip to Canada.
C. Canada wasn’t a good place to practice French.
