22、The idea of life in outer space has been talked about for a long time. Some scientists say that life development on Earth was far too unlikely for it to have happened anywhere else. Things had to be perfect for us to make it on this planet.
Other scientists say that space is too big. Stars and other planets are far too numerous for there to be no other life in the universe.
For many years, there have been reports of visitors from other planets. People all around the world have claimed to see alien spaceships or even aliens themselves.
There have been glimpses of these so-called UFOs (unidentified flying objects) flying through the air and they have even ben captured on video. Some Americans believe that the U.S. Army found an alien spaceship crashed in the desert and then lied to the press about it. Although these sightings may be true, scientists have not found significant evidence that aliens exist.
If you go out into the countryside on a clear night and look up, you can see thousands of stars. Those stars make up a tiny part of our universe. There are more stars, planets, and galaxies than we can count. Even the smartest scientists can’t even come close to defining how big space is. The number of possible stars and planets out there is bigger than our ability to count. If we are really on the only planet that can sustain life, then we are very special in a universe full of amazing things.

23、 We use apps to order takeout, learn English and shop online. But have you ever imagined that we could deal with rubbish by using an app?
Dou Zheng, 15, a ninth-grader at The High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University designed(设计) such an app. People can sell recyclable waste (可回收垃圾) like bottles to rubbish collectors. Just like ordering takeout, people can simply make an order on the app and enjoy door-to-door service. This March, Dou won the first prize at the 36th Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition with the app.
The idea for her app came from a real-life experience. On her way home, she always saw roads that were blocked ( 堵 住 ) because of rubbish collectors. “ There are lots of water bottles and cardboard on the roads. It’s a total mess ,” she said.
After doing research on surrounding communities ( 社 区 ), she found that the answer to the problem was to change the way people and rubbish collectors trade.
Last summer holiday, she ordered a lot of takeout, which gave her the idea to design the app. To believe that it would work, she did surveys on WeChat and in the streets. The results showed that eight out of 10 people supported the idea.
However, she didn’t know how to program apps. She read many books and watched videos to learn about programming on her own. “It’s hard. I have to know what a series of complicated codes (代码) mean and then write my own,” she said. Later, with the help of an app called AppMakr, she finished it! “This app made designing my app easier,” she said.
Her app may go online next year. “I’m working on contacting companies to promote (推广) it,” she said.

25、 When you're sitting in class, have you ever drawn pictures in the margins(边缘) of your notebooks? If so, your teacher may have told you to stop 【1】 them. Many people think of doodling (涂鸦)as distraction(精神涣散) from more important things 【2】 it might be just the opposite.
Some people realize that drawing may help you remember things you hear. In 2019 researchers asked two 【3】 of people to listen to a phone message and then gave them the same task of remembering the information from it. The researchers encouraged one group to doodle, but not the 【4】 . At last, the group that doodled remembered 29 percent more.
Other people have found other uses for doodling.
Jesse Prinz, a professor who studies doodling, says it can help you think creatively. Walking away from a problem to draw might actually help you 【5】 it. When you come back, you will have a fresh idea and work out an answer more quickly.
Two years ago, an author named Sunni Brown wrote a book on doodling. Many people regard doodling 【6】 doing nothing, but 【7】 she doesn't think so. She argues that in fact, doodling is a tool that can help people think, it isn't useless at all. Through doing experiments(实验), Brown shows doodling incorporates (整合) many ways of learning. You use four ways seeing, hearing, reading or writing through doodling. The 【8】 ways you use, the better you learn. And when you doodle while you are listening to lecture(讲座), you use all four.
You might think that being good at drawing is important for doodling. But if doodling is to help you think, it doesn't matter what the picture looks like. So next time you need help to focus, pick up pen and doodle away.
