二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、What are pillows really stuffed with? Not physically, but symbolically? The question occurred to me with the photos in the news and social media from the 50 cities around the world that staged public celebrations for International Pillow Fight Day. Armed with nothing more than bring-our-own sacrificial cushions, strangers struck heavily each other in playful feather from Amsterdam to Atlanta, Warsaw to Washington DC. But why? Is there anything more to this delightful celebration?

As a cultural sign, the pillow is deceptively soft. Since at least the 16th Century, the humble pillow has been given unexpected meanings. The Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu tells a famous story about a wise man who meets a depressed young scholar at an inn and offers him a magic pillow filled with the most vivid dreams of a seemingly more fulfilling life. When the young man awakens to discover that his happy 50-year dream has in fact come and gone in the short space of an afternoon’s nap, our impression of the pillow’s power shifts from wonder to terror.

Subsequent writers have likewise seized upon the pillow. When the 19th-Century English novelist Charlotte Bronte poetically observed “a ruffled (不平的) mind makes a restless pillow”, she didn’t just change the expected order of the adjectives and nouns, but instead she made unclear the boundaries between mind and matter — the thing resting and the thing rested upon.

It’s a trick perhaps Bronte learned from the Renaissance philosopher Montaigne, who once insisted that “ignorance is the softest pillow on which a man can rest his head”. On Montaigne’s thinking, intelligence and happiness confront each other forever in a pillow fight that only one can win.

With the words of Tang. Bronte, and Montaigne, we can perhaps more easily measure the attraction of the global pillow fight. Like a ritual of release, the annual international pillow fight amounts to a kind of cleansing, a brushing off of daily worries: an emptying of the world’s collective mind. Rather than a launch-pad for weightless rest, the pillow is a symbol of heavy thought: an anchor that drags the world’s soul down — one that must be lightened.

【1】The example of Tang Xianzu is used to illustrate that ________.

A.pillows symbolically convey the meaning in contrast to their soft appearance

B.people’s impression of pillows changes from wonder to terror

C.dreams are always wonderful while the real world is cruel

    D.pillows give people satisfactory dreams

【2】The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 “ignorance is the softest pillow on which a man can rest his head” most probably means ________.

    A.pillows give us comfort

    B.pillows make people more intelligent

C.people can easily fall asleep when they know nothing

D.people with too many thoughts have less inner peace

【3】According to the author why is Pillow Fight Day so popular around the world?

A.Because it contains a profound meaning of life.

    B.Because it comforts restless minds.

    C.Because it makes life delightful.

D.Because it is a ritual release.

  • 22、   Eyes are significant organs of our body. Having a good eyesight is sometimes a must in applying for a university or a job. So many researches have been done about eyes, especially about near-sight.

Being nearsighted is far more common than it once was. It has gone up by 66 percent in Americans since the early 1970s, according to a 2009 study by the National Eye Institute. In China and other East Asian countries, as many as 90 percent of recent high school graduates are thought to be nearsighted.

Near-sight happens when eyeballs are longer than normal, changing the angle at which light enters the eye and therefore the ability to focus on distant objects. The disorder involves a complex interplay(相互作用)of genetics and environment and usually begins before adolescence, when the eye is growing, but it can worsen in early adulthood.

Some experts connect the rising rates to the many hours young people stare at computers and other screens. But a recent study published in JAMA Ophthalmology suggests that a greater factor may be a side effect of all that screen-watching—it's keeping children inside.

This new study joins a growing body of research indicating that a lack of direct sunlight may reshape the human eye and do harm to vision. Strong correlations(相关性)were found between current eyesight and volunteers' lifetime exposure to sunlight.

Those who had gotten the most sun, particularly between the ages of 14 and 19, were about 25 percent less likely to have developed myopia(近视眼)by middle age. Exposure to sunlight up to the age of 30 can also confer a protective benefit. This relationship held true even when the researchers controlled for education as a marker primarily of time spent reading and gazing at screens.

    1When does near-sight happen?

A.Eyeballs are longer. B.Eyeballs are shorter.

C.Eyeballs are bigger. D.Eyeballs are smaller.

2What is the main cause of near-sight according to the recent study?

A.Lack of sleep. B.Using smatrphones too much.

C.Reading too much. D.Lack of direct sunlight explosure.

3What does the underlined word "confer" in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Avoid. B.Damage.

    C.Provide. D.Reduce.

4Where is the text most likely from?

    A.A diary. B.A magazine.

    C.A novel D.A notebook.

  • 23、While it's not impossible for birds to fly in the rain, they usually choose not to. You may see birds fly for a few seconds in poor weather, but most of them prefer to stay put on rainy days.

Why does rain make it harder for birds to fly? You might imagine that moving through the air while being pelted by raindrops would be pretty unpleasant. However, it's not the rain itself that makes flying difficult. Instead, birds are influenced by the drop in the air pressure that comes with most rainstorms. When pressure drops, the air is less thick, which makes it harder for birds to fly. Moving through the sky in areas of low air pressure takes a lot of energy.

Most birds need to eat several times a day—rain or no rain. Luckily, most birds' feathers(羽毛)are highly waterproof(防水的), protecting the skin beneath. Many birds can also make oil that they can spread over their feathers to further protect themselves from the rain. Most birds don't like rain. In fact, in a 2010 study, a team of researchers studied birds living in a Costa Rican rainforest. They found that the birds had higher levels of stress hormone(应激激素)on rainy days. That may not surprise you. After all, many animals feel stressed out during storms. Pet owners often find that rain and thunder make their animals nervous. Some animals are so strongly influenced by nature that they almost seem to forecast the future.

No one really knows how many birds die during a storm or series of storms. But the number is certainly higher than usual. They fly into trees or windows; they get lost over the ocean or a large lake; their food sources are made more difficult to get but, at the same time, they need more food to get warm. However, if rain continues for some time, birds will have to challenge the storm.

【1】What makes it harder for birds to fly in the rain?

    A.The wet air.

    B.Food shortage.

    C.Raindrops.

    D.The low air pressure.

【2】What does the underlined word "pelted" in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Cleaned.

    B.Hit.

    C.Frightened.

    D.Protected.

【3】What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

A.Why birds can fly in the rain

B.How birds are influenced by rain.

C.How birds survive long rainy days.

    D.Why birds' feathers are waterproof.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Birds will develop the ability to fly in the rain

B.Birds fly only when necessary on rainy days.

C.Birds have nowhere to hide in rainstorms.

D.Birds need less food on rainy days.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage. Use your own words as far as possible.

    Wearable Data

The classic nightmare of suddenly realizing you're naked in public could soon get a futuristic twist: it might involve the horror of losing not just your modesty but also your codes. Scientists recently created magnetic garments that they say can store data, automatically unlock doors or control a nearby smart-phone with gestures.

The concept of interactive ‘smart clothing’ has drawn attention in the past couple of years. For example, Google and Levi's created a touch-sensitive denim jacket that can operate a smart-phone. This and other smart garment are made with conductive thread and usually require an attached electonic device.

To eliminate the need for such attached gear, researchers at the University of Washington recently took advantage of what they say is previously untapped property of conductive thread: its ability to be magnetized. Using magnetic instead of electric properties of the thread ‘may seem like a small difference, but it's what makes this work interesting and exciting,’ says Chris Harrison, a computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon University, who was not part of the research. The new technique allowed the researchers to do something they say is unique among wearables: turn them into storage devices. The Washington team magnetized a patch of fabric embroidered with conductive thread, giving different parts of the cloth a north or south orientation that corresponded to binary 1's or 0's. This step allowed the researchers to store us to 33 million different combinations—such as pass codes for doors—on a shirt cuff.

The graments still stored data after washing, drying and ironing, but they could not escape time's eraser; after about a week, the thread's magnetic fields had weakened by around 30 percent. The researchers suggest that using custom made thread designed to hold stronger magnetic fields might work longer. But for now the clothes may be best suited for storing temporary codes, such as those found on hotel key cards or clothing tags in stores. Harrison says that it is Very unlikely you're ever going to achieve a comparable density to magnetic hard drives with data-storing fabric, however.
