21、Scientists in the Netherlands have trained bees to identify COVID-19 through their sense of smell, according to a press release from Wageningen University. The research was conducted on more than 150 bees in Wageningen University’s bio-veterinary research laboratory.
The scientists trained the bees by giving them a treat — a sugar-water solution (溶液) — every time they were exposed to the scent of a mink (貂) infected with COVID-19. Each time the bees were exposed to a non-infected sample, they wouldn’t get a reward. Eventually, the bees could identify an infected sample within a few seconds — and would then stick out their tongues like clockwork to collect the sugar water.
Bees aren’t the first animals to detect COVID-19 by scent. Researchers have also trained dogs to distinguish between positive and negative COVID-19 samples from human saliva (唾液) or sweat with fairly high levels of accuracy. A small German study found that dogs could identify positive COVID-19 samples 94% of the time. That’s because metabolic changes from the coronavirus make an infected person’s bodily fluids smell slightly different from those of a non-infected person. But researchers still aren’t sure whether animals are the best bet (赌注) for sniffing out COVID-19 cases outside the lab.
“No one is saying they can replace a PCR machine, but they could be very promising,” Holger Volk, a neurologist, told Nature. PCR machines are what lab technicians use to process standard COVID-19 swab tests. At the very least, certain animals could be useful for identifying COVID-19 in places or countries in which high-tech laboratory equipment is scarce or inaccessible.
Wageningen scientists are working on a prototype of a machine that could automatically train multiple bees at once. Then bees can use their skills to test for coronavirus aerosols (气溶胶) in the surrounding environment.
【1】How did the researchers teach the bees to identify COVID-19?
A.By offering bees some rewards.
B.By infecting bees with COVID-19.
C.By raising bees with sugar water.
D.By exposing bees to infected humans.
【2】Why are dogs capable of finding out negative COVID-19 samples?
A.For dogs can sniff out hidden virus of the samples.
B.For dogs can tell the different smell of the samples.
C.For dogs can feel metabolre changes of the samples.
D.For dogs can distinguish saliva from sweat of the samples.
【3】What is the follow-up task of Wageningen scientists?
A.To breed more multiple bees.
B.To detect coronavirus aerosols.
C.To help underdeveloped countries.
D.To develop a new type of machine.
【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A New Way to Cure COVID-19 Disease
B.Bees: Well-trained COVID-19 Detectors (探测器)
C.Bees’ Extremely Accurate Sense of Smell

22、Talking to children about disasters
Natural disasters are terrible events. They are difficult for adults and children. But adults should not be afraid to talk to children about natural disasters.【1】But talking can help children feel safer and less afraid of the future. Here are five things adults can do when children show fear of natural disasters.
First, adults should be willing to talk with children. When children are allowed to talk about their fears, they feel safer. Sometimes, the best thing an adult can do is just listen. 【2】
Second,【3】When answering their questions, it is best to give short, honest answers. If you do not know the answer, you can be honest and say that you do not know.
Third, it is important to wait until a child is ready to talk about a natural disaster. Adults should not force children to talk.
Fourth, help children feel safe.【4】One way is very simple: adults can tell frightened children that they love them. It is also important for children to do the same things they do every day. Simple things like going to school and eating dinner can help children feel normal.
Fifth, use activities to help children communicate their fears. Heshani was 13 when the Indian Ocean tsunami (海啸) ruined her house in SriLanka. One year later, she was still living under the shadow (阴影) of the natural disaster. She did not like to visit her ruined house. And she did not want to talk about the problems her family had. However, she loved to write. 【5】Writing poems was a way for her to share her fears since she did not like to talk about them.
A.let children ask questions.
B.There are many ways to do this.
C.Talking cannot stop natural disasters from happening.
D.learning is of great importance to adults.
E.We should feel safe first.
F.Whatever the fear is, it is important to listen and be patient with the child.
G.And she often shared her feelings about the tsunami in her poems.
23、 The amount of time young children in the United States spend with mobile screens might raise some eyebrows, as a new report found it has tripled in just four years.
Children 8 and younger spent about 15 minutes a day staring at a mobile screen in 2013 and now they spend 48 minutes a day, according to the report by Common Sense Media, a nonprofit organization focused on helping children, parents, and educators navigate the world of media and technology.
The report, released on Thursday, also found that 42% of children 8 and younger now have their own tablet devices, a sharp increase from 7% four years ago and less than 1% in 2011.
Children spending more time on mobile devices comes as no shock to Douglas Gentile, a psychology professor at Iowa State University who was not involved in the new report but has studied the effects of media use on children.
“On the one hand, it's not surprising because it's what we look around ourselves and can see.I can see it at the airport, for example, I can see it at restaurants and I can even see it in my own home where my younger daughter watches almost no television, but she'll watch lots of TV shows on her phone, "Gentile said.
“On the other hand, it's been getting harder for parents to really monitor a lot of what their kids are seeing and doing. At the same time, they're relying on the seeming benefit of being able to quiet the kid at a restaurant with a device,” he said. “We may be building a bit of a Frankenstein’s monster, because we re using that power for our benefit, not for the child’s benefit.”
These changing patterns in how children interact with media appear to be great, said James Steyer, chief executive officer and founder of Common Sense Media.in an email to CNN. “One of the most shocking findings is that mobile devices are now as popular in the home as TVs-98% of households with kids under 8 have a mobile device,” he said. “The ubiquity of mobile is changing childhood.”
【1】The writer uses figures in the second paragraph to_________.
A.prove the reliability of the report.
B.praise the efforts made by Common Sense Media.
C.indicate the popular use of mobile devices nowadays.
D.illustrate the increase of time children spend on mobile devices.
【2】According to Douglas Gentile, parents_________.
A.can totally control children's use of mobile devices .
B.always use mobile devices in favor of their children.
C.partly cause children's increasing use of mobile devices.
D.often discourage their children from using mobile devices.
【3】The underlined word in the last paragraph most probably means “_________”.

24、Sidney Keys,14-year-old, has started a youth-led book club program, with the support and help of his mom, to help empower both himself and many other boys with mental or physical problems through literature.
Keys’ idea to create Books N Bros was born from his own setbacks and struggles. “I used to have a really bad stutter and perform badly in school and I would get laughed at for it,” Sidney Keys, the founder of the book club Books N Bros said. “Reading was kind of my escape from my stutter because in my head I was able to imagine things and play out all the events clearly.” He said, “I wanted to start up Books N Bros so that I could talk to other people, especially boys, about books I love in a relaxing way because it’s like a brotherhood.”
The reading club that he started at just 10 years old now has over 250“bros”aged 7 to 13 from the U.S. and Canada, most of whom are changing actively and positively. Marvel’s Hero Project, which reveals the remarkable, positive change young men make in their communities across the country and turns them into superheroes, selected Keys to be featured in the Disney series.
“I always wanted to read books that had characters that looked like me, but now I see a comic book with me in it,” Keys said delightedly. “It’s really awesome, especially when I hear my friends and teachers call me my superhero name at school.”
As for the future of Books N Bros, Keys and his mom hope to expand the programs reach throughout the country. “Getting Books N Bros in schools across America, we don’t want transportation to be an issue for getting that physical brotherhood and bond. It just benefits so many people, and it keeps me going,” Keys explained.
【1】What caused Sidney Keys to build Books N Bros?
A.His mother’s support.
B.His poor school performance.
