21、People get first impression in seconds, but what exactly are they looking at when they judge you?
A professor Amy Caddy and her group have been studying first impressions for more than 15 years, and have discovered something in common. In her new book Presence, Cuddy says people quickly answer two questions when they first meet you: Can I trust this person? Can I respect this person?
Psychologists translate these questions as warmth and competence (能力), and usually, we want to be seen as having both. Interestingly, Cuddy says that most people, especially in their workplace, believe that competence is the more important one. After all, they want to prove that they are smart and talented enough to do their job well. But in fact, warmth, or trustworthiness, is the most important one in how people judge you. “From an evolutionary (进化的) point of view,” Cuddy says, “it matters more to our survival to know whether a person deserves our trust.”
While competence is highly valued, Cuddy says it is considered only after trust is set up. And focusing too much on showing your strength can backfire. Cuddy says MBA students often care so much about being seen as smart and competent that it can lead them to avoid social events, not to ask for help, and generally to come off as unfriendly. These overachievers (特优者) invite their trouble when they don’t get the job offer because nobody gets to know and trust them as people.
“If someone you’re trying to influence doesn’t trust you, you’re not going to get very far. In fact, you might even be considered not reliable because you come across as bossy (专横的),” Cuddy says. “A warm, trustworthy person who is also strong gets admiration, but only after you’ve established trust does your strength become a gift rather than a threat.”

22、 Cursive(手写体)is about to become extinct. Do we raise the red flag?To teach or not to teach cursive is the question that several state education departments are struggling with.
Before you read the following, do a simple exercise. Pick a pen and paper and start writing in cursive. Yes, that fancy handwriting that you learned in grade school. You may not have forgotten the good times you had while writing loopy Ps and Gs as well as curly Ms and Ns. However, the chances are that you won't be able to write it as excellently as you used to. Some people are good at making the perfect loops and curls, while some are bad. I am still terrible at it.
Cursive is hardly used by kids anymore as even adults don't write in this style, unless they are using it for their signature. Learning this handwriting was a usual practice in school for several decades. However, in 201l, the Indiana Department of Education made it optional for schools to teach cursive writing to the students. In fact, there were 46 more states who have done the same.
There are some who believe that it is high time for cursive to retire from school curriculum. After all, if we don't leave the past behind, we cannot make way for new things. If you walk into any classroom, you would find children using keyboards to communicate in written form. On the other hand, fans of this cursive insist on its usefulness. They remind us if we stop teaching and learning cursive in schools, very soon most of our historical documents will become hard to us.
Where do we stand on this subject? Is it the right time to erase an almost forgotten handwriting and live in the keyboarding world?Or can we do both without compromising on our school curriculum?Let me know your preference on this matter by leaving a comment in the section below.

If you look at a photograph of leopards, would you be able to tell which two were related based on their spots? Unless you’re a leopard expert, the answer is most likely not, says Tanya Berger-Wolf, director of the Translational Data Analytics Institute. But, she says, computers can.
Berger-Wolf and her team are pioneering a new field of study called imageomics (成像组学) which uses machine learning to obtain biological data from photos and videos of living organisms. They have recently begun working together with researchers studying leopards to compare spot patterns of moms and children using efficient algorithms (算法).
Berger-Wolf says the computer uses algorithms to count how many animals are in the image, as well as where and when it was taken, which could contribute to population counts. Not only can AI do this at a much lower cost than hiring people but also at a faster rate. In August 2021, AI analyzed 17 million images instantly.
As Berger-Wolf points out, population size is the most basic indicator of a species’ wellness. AI scanned 11,000 images of whale sharks to create hot spots and help researchers identify individual whale sharks and track their movement, which led to updated information about their population size. This new data made the conservation status of the whale shark changed from “unsafe” to “endangered” in 2016.
AI is still a fast-growing field when it comes to wildlife conservation, but Berger-Wolf is hopeful. For now, the team is cleaning the data of the leopard hot spots to ensure the results are true biologically meaningful information. If meaningful, the data could teach researchers how species are responding to changing habitats and climates and show us where humans can step into help.
【1】What can we know about imageomics?
A.It takes photos for animals.
B.It helps in population counts.
C.It’s started by leopard experts.
D.It collects data from computers.
【2】Why are whale sharks mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To introduce their new conservation status.
B.To stress the importance of population size.
C.To discuss factors for the species’ wellness.
D.To show the value of AI in animal protection.
【3】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Imageomics will further support researchers’ work.
B.These data on leopards are not reliable as expected.
C.Researchers fear AI would change animal behaviors.
D.AI could really replace human effort in animal protection.
