21、Robots often star in popular science fiction movies as the bad guys that take over the world and control mankind. But with the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic (新型冠状病毒), robots are increasingly being employed as helpers, performing often dull, difficult and dangerous tasks and thus reducing humans’ exposure (暴露) to COVID-19.
Across the world, robotics companies are teaming with health care providers and government officials to develop technological solutions for dealing with the global health crisis. In China, robots have rolled down streets spraying disinfectant. In at least one hospital in South Korea, robots are being used to check patients’ temperatures and give out hand wash.
In the United States, two of the major ways in which robotic technology is being used are to disinfect hospital rooms and to act as telemedicine portal (远程医疗门户), allowing doctors and health care workers to communicate via video conference directly with patients without unnecessarily exposing themselves to the virus.
In Boston, doctors, researchers and robotics engineers have cooperated to bring a friendly, dog-like robot named Spot into Brigham and Women’s Hospital, allowing doctors to interact with COVID-19 patients via telemedicine. What sets Spot apart is its four-legged design, which allows the robot to move about easily in different settings, such as the tent set up outside the hospital.
In March, researchers began developing and testing the robot’s design to enable Spot to interact with patients, thus reducing the exposure of frontline health care workers to the virus. In the place of head, Spot has an iPad fixed to stand, allowing doctors to conduct telemedicine sessions with their patients.
Researchers are working to increase the robots’ diagnostic (诊断) abilities, enabling it to test the patient’s temperature and measure his or her respiratory rate.
Dr. Peter Chai, an emergency medicine physician, predicts that hospitals will continue to find ways to use robots even after the coronavirus pandemic is over, whether it may be through delivering supplies to rooms or seeing patients with other contagious (传染性的) diseases.

22、 The Ig Nobel Prize (搞笑诺贝尔奖) hands out awards for “achievements that first make people laugh, then make them think.” Sometimes the world of design can feel the same way: a pen that can detect cancer mid-surgery, for example. But a musical instrument engineered for zero gravity? Perhaps less so. Nevertheless, both are driven by the desire to improve lives.
The pen, musical instrument and more could be found at the Global Grad Show, which has rapidly become a regional networking opportunity with large commercial value, but that hasn’t stopped grassroots innovation from pushing through.
The graduate show, organized by author and designer Brendan MeGetrick, brought together 150 student projects from 100 universities including MIT and Harvard, and countries as diverse as Jordan. Chile and Pakistan. Schools, McGetrick told CNN, are “where one finds design in its purest and most potentially valuable form.”
“Free from the commercial pressures of professional life, the next generation of designers is channeling their craft to improve the world,” he added. “The next generations do not have the luxury to hope that the present issues will be solved. They anticipate the worst and see how they might channel their talents and training to invent tools that we will need before we urgently need them.
This year’s winner of the Global Grad Show, Mirjam de Bruijn said: “I think we should stop thinking that we can do it on our own. I think designers, scientists, technologists and entrepreneurs should start working together. As a designer, I see too many great solutions that are not being used because their design is bad, and I am sure that scientists or technologists think the same with some designs that look better than they actually work.”
【1】A pen and a musical instrument are mentioned to show ________.
A.some designs are ridiculous but meaningful. B.sone achievements are serious but useless.
C.some instruments are supernatural but handy. D.some surgeries are risky bout reasonable.
【2】How will the Global Grad Show benefit the graduates?
A.By leaching skills and knowledge.
B.By offering scientific researches.
C.By providing commercially valuable opportunities.
D.By inspiring the invention ol the urgently needed tools.
【3】According to MeGetrick, the next generation of designers ________.
A.wants to work out the present issues eagerly
B.hates to make their designs on their own
C.feels angry for those solutions not being used
D.tends to find design in its purest form
【4】Which or the following statements might Mirjam de Bruijn agree with?
A.Where there is a will, there is a way. B.Two heads are better than one.
C.Great minds think alike. D.Birds of a feather flock together.
23、In less than 2 months, the artificial intelligence (AI) program ChatGPT has become a cultural sensation (轰动). ChatGPT is developed with a technique called Reinforcement (增强) Learning from Human Feedback to train the language model, enabling it to automatically create text based on written prompts (提示). I asked it to rewrite the first scene of the classic American play Death of a Salesman. The output (输出) was an amusing conversation. This is certainly fun, but there are serious implications for generative AI programs like ChatGPT in science and academia.
Many concerns relate to how ChatGPT will change education. It certainly can write essays about a range of topics. I gave it both an exam and a final project. It did well finding factual answers, but the scholarly writing still has a long way to go. If anything, the implications for education may push academics (高校科研人员) to rethink their courses in creative ways and give assignments that aren’t easily solved by AI. That could be for the best.
More worrisome are the effects of ChatGPT on writing scientific papers. In a recent study abstracts created by ChatGPT were submitted to academic reviewers, who only caught 63% of these fakes. That’s a lot of AI-generated text that could find its way into the literature soon.
The text written by ChatGPT is not acceptable. An AI program cannot be an author. Still, according to Editorial Policies, text generated by ChatGPT (or any other AI tools) cannot be used in the work, nor can figures, images, or graphics be the products of such tools. Breaking these policies will be considered scientific misconduct (学术不端) no different from plagiarism (剽窃) of existing works.
The scientific record is one of the human efforts of struggling with important questions in the end. Machines play an important role, but as tools for the people giving the hypotheses (假设), designing the experiments and making sense of (理解) the results. Finally, the product must come from and be expressed by the wonderful computer in our heads.
【1】What does the underlined word “implications” probably mean in Paragraph1?
A.Competitions.
B.Events .
C.Limitations.
D.Effects.
【2】What could be ChatGPT’s benefit for education, if any?
A.It could help better the scholarly writing.
B.It could write essays about varieties of topics.
C.It could be used to design difficult assignments.
D.It could push academics to make improvements.
【3】What can be inferred about ChatGPT?
A.It is welcomed by academics.
B.It may cause scientific misconduct (学术不端).
C.It is basically useless for scientific research.
D.It works greatly to the advantage of education.
【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

24、The Chinese new year begins on 22 January, 2023 and lasts until 9 February 2024.While most of Asia celebrates the year of the rabbit, Vietnam celebrates the year of the cat. In the Chinese zodiac(十二生肖), there are 12 animals, and the 4th animal is the rabbit; while in the Vietnamese zodiac, the 4th position is occupied by the cat. How the cat covered for the rabbit in Vietnam’s zodiac is still the subject of debate.
It was said the Jade Emperor organized a race across a river for all the animals in the world. The first 12 to reach the other side would appear in the zodiac. In the Chinese version of the story, the cat and the rat were riding across a river on an ox when the rat pushed the cat into the water. The rat won the race, turning the two animals into enemies. That is why cats have been hunting rats ever since. However, in the Vietnamese version—which did not have a rabbit—the cat could swim and ended up arriving.
One possible explanation for replacing rabbit with cat might have to do with language. In old Chinese, there is’ a word tied to the sign of the rabbit that is pronounced mao (卯).The pronunciation is similar to mèo, the Vietnamese word for cat.
Quyen Di, a lecturer at UCLA, said the custom has to do with the landscape of Vietnam. “Initially, the Chinese lived in the savanna(稀树草原)area, while the Vietnamese lived in the lowland area. The people of the savanna prefer a nomadic life, close to the wilderness, and they chose the rabbit as an animal that lived in the wild fields. In contrast, the lowland people of Vietnam consider rabbits as animals that are used for food and chose the cat because they believe cats are friends living in their house.
This year, many Vietnamese are buying new cat-themed cases for their mobile phones. And one of the top Google searches in Vietnam is “why there is no cat in the Chinese zodiac”.
