二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Bedtime on the Orient Express. We stood in the corridor while a woman pulled our bunk beds (双层铺) into place-- there wasn’t room in the carriage for all three of us. Barking the news that she would be waking us at 7 a.m. with a cup of instant coffee and a piece of cheese, the woman left and we retired for the night.

‘ Bunk beds?’ you may be thinking. Small carriage? Instant coffee? This can’t be the real Orient Express! Oh, but it is. This is a very real Orient Express indeed. In search of a long weekend in Vienna, there seemed no more attractive way for my friend and me to get there.

The original Orient Express service was started in 1863. Luxury carriages ran the route from Paris, France to Giugiu, Romania. In 1934, Agatha Christie sent Hercule Poirot on just such a journey in her novel Murder on the Orient Express. However, there was a rise in air travel which was quicker and cheaper and eventually the whole operation was brought to a halt in 1977. The name was reused in 1982, when the Venice Simplon-Orient-Expresss took its first voyage between London and Venice.

Admittedly I would have loved to take the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, with its on-board shop and piano in the bar, but at around £1,700 per person for a four-night one-way journey, it was too expensive for us. So we chose this excellent way of buying into the romance for a small amount of the cost.

But we loved it. Ours was no luxury bedroom, but it had its own rough charm-- not to mention the magic of travelling across international borders overnight. I haven’t slept in a bunk bed since I was seven, and climbing up into it took 25 years off me. For one night only, it was comfortably appealing. Naturally, I took a copy of Murder on the Orient Express to read on the train. I smiled at the descriptions of airy dining cars and fresh coffee.

My weekend in Vienna was wonderful and reunited with the cut-price Orient Express at the end of the holiday, we were rather delighted to see our little carriage again. Good old bunk beds. Terrifying old attendant. And best of all, nobody got murdered.

1What does the underlined word “halt” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Change B. Trouble

    C. Return D. Stop

2What do we know about the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express?

    A. It was first put to use in 1863. B. It runs between Paris and Giugiu.

    C. It referred to a railway line at first. D. It is luxurious and its fare is expensive.

3What made the author choose the ordinary train?

    A. The low price. B. The bunk beds.

    C. The air of romance. D. The shop and the bar.

4Why did the author smile while reading Murder on the Orient Express on the train?

    A. His experience was different from the book’s description.

    B. He felt relieved that nobody got murdered on the train.

    C. The book was very interesting and amusing.

    D. He enjoyed his train journey very much.

  • 22、Iceland is experiencing a book boom(繁荣时期).

It is hard to avoid writers in Reykjavik. There is a phrase in Icelandic, “ad ganga med bok I maganum”, meaning everyone gives birth to a book. Literally, everyone “has a book in their stomach”. One in 10 Icelanders will publish one.

Does it get rather competitive?” I ask the young novelist, Kristin Eirikskdottir. “Yes. Especially as I live with my mother and partner, who are also full-time writers. But we try to publish in alternate years so we do not compete too much.”

Writers are respected here,” Agla Magnusdottir tells me. “They live well. Some even get a salary.” Magnusdottir is head of the new Icelandic Literature Centre, which offers state support for literature and its translation. “They write everything --- modern sagas(长篇英雄故事), poetry, children's books, literary and extraordinary fiction --- but the biggest boom is in crime writing, she says.

So what has led to this phenomenal book boom? I would say it is due to a crop of good writers, telling interesting tales with elegant economy and fantastic characters.

Iceland's black lava(火山岩) riverbeds, its steaming, bubbling earth, with its towering volcanoes and fairytale streams also make it the perfect setting for stories. Solvi Bjorn Siggurdsson, an Icelandic novelist, says writers owe a lot to the past. We are a nation of storytellers. When it was dark and cold we had nothing else to do, he says. Thanks to the poetic works and medieval(中世纪的) sagas, we have always been surrounded by stories. After independence from Denmark in 1944, literature helped define our identity.”

Siggurdsson shows respect to Iceland's Nobel Literature winner, Halldor Laxness, whose books are sold in petrol stations and tourist centres across the island. Locals name their cats after Laxness and pay a visit to his home. “When Laxness won the Nobel Prize in 1955 he put modern Icelandic literature on the map,” Siggurdsson tells me. “He gave us confidence to write.”

【1】The underlined phrase in the passage suggests that ________.

    A. Icelanders love collecting books.

    B. Icelanders love writing very much.

    C. there are a lot of great books in Iceland.

    D. it is competitive to publish a book in Iceland.

【2】What kind of book is the most popular in Iceland?

    A. Poetry. B. Medieval sagas.

    C. Crime novels. D. Children’s stories.

【3】 Which of the following is true according to the passage?.

    A. Siggurdsson won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1955.

    B. Icelanders publish books to increase their income.

    C. Writers in Iceland don’t benefit from its literary tradition.

    D. Iceland possesses some factors to be a perfect setting for stories.

  • 23、A UK college has started teaching students the Danish concept of hygge — said to make homes nicer and people happier. But what exactly is it?

Sitting by the fire on a cold night, while petting a dog — probably surrounded by candles. That’ s certainly “hygge”. Eating home-made cakes. Watching TV under a warm quilt. Tea served in a china set. Family get-togethers at Christmas. They’re all hygge too.

The Danish word, pronounced “hoo-ga”, is usually translated into English as “cosiness(舒适)”. But it’s much more than that — it is an entire attitude to life that makes Denmark one of the world’s happiest countries.

Morley College, in central London, is teaching students how to achieve hygge as part of its Danish language course. “We have long, cold winters in Denmark,” says lecturer Susanne Nilsson. “That influences things. Hygge doesn’t have to be a winter-only thing, but it isn’t that fine for much of the year.”

With up to 17 hours of darkness per day in winter, and average temperatures staying around 0℃, people spend more time indoors as a result, says Nilsson, meaning there’s greater focus on home entertaining.

The idea is to feel as at-home as possible, forgetting life’s worries. “Hygge works best when there’s not too large an empty space around the person or people,” Nilsson adds.

The recent growth in Scandinavian-themed restaurants, cafes and bars in the UK is helping to export hygge, Nilsson says. Most customers won’t have heard of the term, but they might get a sense of it.

Similarly, in the US, the wallpaper and fabric firm Hygge & West aims to channel the concept through its cheery designs, as does a Los Angeles bakery, called Hygge, which sells traditional Danish cakes and treats.

Hygge is a deep-rooted tradition in Danes’ life. Helen Russell, author of The Year of Living Danishly: Uncovering the Secrets of the World ’ s Happiest Country, says, “Hygge is so important for those who live Danishly that the other day, I saw a camper car parked by the roadside with lit candles in the windows.”

【1】Which can be used to explain the concept of hygge?

    A.It means success.

B.It is a way to relax.

    C.It requires a large room.

    D.It is a candle-involved moment.

【3】What do we learn about hygge in the UK and the US?

A.It is ignored by the two countries’ people.

B.It is quite different from that in Denmark.

C.It is a new trend in the two countries.

D.It is related to several traditions.

【4】What is the main purpose of the text?

A.To explain the history of hygge.

B.To discuss a UK college course.

  • 24、American scientists say they’ve developed a way to grow wood materials in a laboratory. The method could create different wood products indoors in a single process, greatly cutting the time and money spent on production and reducing damage to the world’s forests.

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) showed a proof of concept by growing wood-like structures from cells taken from the leaves of a flowering plant. The process can hopefully simplify and speed up the production of wood products.

“The way we get these materials hasn’t changed in centuries and is very inefficient,” lead researcher Luis said. “The present process for making any wooden product can take many years. First, a tree has to grow. Then, it must be cut down, transported, processed, etc. Lab-grown wood, however, could combine all those steps into one. If you want a table, then you should just grow a table.”

In the wood experiment, the MIT team collected live cells from the leaves of a zinnia plant. The plant cells were then cultured and kept in a special environment. The experiment was carried out indoors, without soil or sunlight. During the process, the researchers used a mixture of two plant hormones (荷尔蒙) that helped the cells grow a thick, strong wood-like structure. With further development, the researchers say they could use the same process to grow wood in specific shapes, such as a table or chair.

“The process can remove difficulties linked to weather and seasonality in traditional agriculture methods,” Luis said. “Though it is still in early development, our team will be working to learn how to better control the final materials that are produced. And, we will also carry out new experiments to see whether the same results can be reached with other kinds of plants.”

David Stern, a plant biologist and president of the Boyce Thompson Institute told MIT News, “It sounds that this technology is very powerful, but what the researchers ignore is that further development of the method would require major financial and intellectual investments.” He also said new issues would arise when parts of forestry and agriculture are brought into the lab.

【1】What can the method developed by American scientists be described as?

    A.cost-effective

    B.widely applicable

    C.eco-friendly

    D.time-consuming

【2】How does Luis explain the disadvantage of the present process of wood production?

    A.By using specific figures.

    B.By providing definitions.

    C.By making a comparison.

    D.By showing causes and effects.

【3】Why was a mixture of two plant hormones used in the experiment?

A.To make the wood grow in specific shapes.

B.To promote the growth of the live plant cells.

C.To prevent sunlight from hurting the plant cells.

D.To help the plant cells adapt to the special environment.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Trees that grow naturally will be useless

B.The furniture in your office is probably growing

C.Forests made in the lab will change the environment

D.Scientists develop a method to grow wood in a lab

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) perched on the tree near their window.

The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.”

After a few minutes, the father asked his son the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father, I have just now told you ‘It’s a crow.’”

After a little while, the old father again asked his son the third time, “What is this?”

At this time some expression of irritation (恼怒) was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father unwillingly. “It’s a crow, a crow.”

After a little while, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this?”

This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW.’ Are you not able to understand this?”

A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered (发皱的) diary, which he had maintained since his son was born.

On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page.

When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:

“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel irritated, but I rather felt affection for my innocent son.”
