二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   There's no feeling quite like walking alongside the river.

It's the last light in the valley, and the sound of rushing water drowned out all others. I walk the river's edge with my dog, Mosi, whose inability to hear over the waterfall makes him nervous. Despite his impressive size, he runs sheepishly at my feet. At first glance, we walk to fish, but actually we move at the urging of naturalists long since passed—of John Burroughs and of Loren Eiseley—and of my parents, Norman and Paula, who are still alive today but live far from this Kenya valley. Walk in the woods, their voices advise, along the banks of a river where, in the blue end of a day, you may find the rhythms that fascinate you. There, among the fish and the flowers and the forces that bind them, you might make peace with your worried mind.

I began to venture into the highlands of central Kenya in 2013 with the hope that its rivers might throw their _________ power upon me, smoothing my edges as they have, over time, polished the stones in their path. I've never been free of emotional stress, but my years of working as a photojournalist in some of Africa's most conflict-ridden environment left additional barbs in me. With time it became hard to distinguish between the conflicts that existed inside me and the ones that I witnessed through the lens. Gradually they became intertwined, and I felt an expanding sense of tension and discomfort inside me.

Fly-fishing seemed a cure of the pain of photographing people's suffering, as I'd done so often in recent years. I hadn't cast a fishing line since the age of 10 or so, when I used bait to fish the Atlantic waters that surrounded the places I lived at a child, first along the coast of New Jersey and later in Massachusetts. My mother's friend at that time taught me the basics. He was a large, athletic man who'd been in the U. S. Army Special Forces, an experience that left him with his own scars. At dusk by the river, his hand resting comfortably on the rod, he seemed at ease.

Between assignments I began to drive around. The slow-flowing river drifts through protected forests, where a network of paths, used by humans, elephants and lions, cuts through thick vegetation. I came to realize that the river had given me more than I'd asked—I regained the peace inside me, and it seemed that I'd gone back to my childhood when sand sharks and puffer fish made my heart beat with curiosity.

【1】Which of the following statements is true according to the first two paragraphs?

A.The author came to the valley to fish as well as to make peace with his worried mind.

B.The deafening sound of the waterfall made the author and his dog quite scared.

C.The author's parents advised him to discover nature in the depths of the valley.

D.The valley environment is said to have a healing power upon one's heart.

【2】Which of the following is the best word to fill in the blank in the 2nd paragraph?

    A.rushing.

    B.shaking.

    C.transforming.

    D.encouraging.

【3】Which of the following statements is true about the author?

A.His occupation as a cameraman added to his inner frustration.

B.He got to make friends with his mother's friend because of fly-fishing.

C.In his spare time, he often walked through the vegetation along the paths.

D.Finally he was cured by his childhood experience with sand sharks and puffer fish.

【4】Which of the following best serves as the title for the passage?

A.My Job in Photography Led Me to a Valley.

B.A River Heals the Scar Left by a Camera.

C.The Call of Naturalists Pushed Me to Explore.

D.The Fishing Rod Links Nature With My Heart.

  • 22、   Alibaba starts taking the lead in China, simply enough, by connecting big Chinese manufacturers (制造商) with big buyers across the world. Its business-to-business site, Alibaba.com allows business to buy almost everything. Alibaba’s advantage isn’t hard to identify: size. Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards. Its marketplaces attract 231 million active buyers, 8 million sellers, 11.3 billion orders a year — and Alibaba is just the middleman. It encourages people to use its markets — not charging small sellers a percentage of the sale.

If you want a quick look into the influence of Alibaba on daily Chinese life, take my experience. I moved to Beijing almost a year ago and quickly got tired of visiting small stores across the crowded, polluted city of 20 million people in search of new electronics, bathroom furnishings, and anything else my wife wanted. “You’re looking for what exactly? Why not try it?” my Chinese teacher asked me one day. With that, my wonderful new relationship with Alibaba began.

Alibaba’s original business-to-business model now is second to consumer buying. Chinese retail (零售) buying makes up 80% of Alibaba’s profit, and leading that group is Taobao, with 800 million items for sale and the most unbelievable selection of things you’ll ever find. TMall.com is Alibaba’s other big site, where you can find brand name goods from Nike and Unilever near the lowest prices. What I have a hard time explaining to friends and family back in the U.S. is how China has gone beyond traditional shopping — big-box retailers especially — in favor of online purchases on Taobao and a few other sites. In smaller towns than Beijing, where big retailers have not yet traveled, shopping online is shopping, and shopping is Taobao.

I have a list of some of my recent purchases on Taobao for a sense of how wide the marketplace is. Almost everything arrived a day or two after ordering with free shipping. I’m not even a big buyer, because I need friends to help me search the Chinese-language site. When I was searching my purchase history on my Chinese teacher’s iPad, which helps me buy goods, I looked through with great difficulty about 10 of her purchases for every one of mine.

1Alibaba’s advantage mainly lies in _________.

A.its low price B.its big size

C.its not charging small sellers D.its business-to-business service

2What can we learn from the underlined sentence in the passage?

    A.Alibaba will continue to develop.

B.Alibaba stands out as the best online site.

C.Alibaba is of middle size among all the online sites.

D.Alibaba acts as a bridge between the buyers and sellers.

3What can be inferred from the passage?

A.TMall.com provides more profit than Taobao.

B.The author’s Chinese teacher is also an online purchase lover.

C.Taobao has no obvious advantage over other similar online sites.

D.Alibaba’s business-to-business service earns more than retail now.

4What is the passage mainly about?

    A.Shopping online is Taobao.

B.How the author purchases online in China.

C.Alibaba greatly influences people’s daily purchase in China.

D.The influence of shopping online goes beyond traditional shopping.

  • 24、   Even as a young boy growing up in Taos, New Mexico, Michael A. Naranjo, a Tewa Indian, knew what he wanted to be. In his childhood dreams, which were made all the more real as he crafted animal figures from the same clay his mother used to make her pottery, Michael saw himself as an artist, creating with his hands the visions (景象) he held in his mind.

However, Michael’s dreams were nearly broken when a grenade (手榴弹) took away his eyesight and much of the use of his right hand. At twenty-three years of age, with only one good hand and no longer able to see the world around him, it seemed evident that Michael’s life as an artist was not to be. Artists, however, rarely gain complete control over their medium (媒介) simply because of their physical abilities or senses; and what seemed evident to others was not at all evident to Michael.

His eyesight was gone, which was true, but the images he had captured in his early youth, and those yet to be imagined, could not be destroyed. Thus, while recovering from his wounds, Michael asked for some clay and began to shape once again some of the figures he had made as a boy. As he worked with the clay, another creative process was at workMichael Naranjo was shaping himself into the master sculptor he is today. Drawing from the spirit within himself, Michael’s pieces evoke (唤起) the strength of his Indian ancestry. Remembering the feast days of his youth, Michael has represented in his work the Eagle Dance, Corn Dance, Hoop Dance, and Deer Dance, thus preserving in bronze these ancient traditions.

Michael Naranjo is not a great sculptor because he is an Indian or because he is a veteran(老兵), or because he cannot see; he is a great sculptor because he sees so well.

1Why did young Naranjo craft animal figures?

A.His mother asked him to do so. B.He was just imitating his mother.

C.He had decided to become an artist. D.He wanted to help support the family.

2What can we learn about Naranjo from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?

A.He couldn’t accept the fact that he was blind.

B.He didn’t care what others thought of him.

C.He was slow in making up his mind.

D.He was optimistic about his dream.

3According to the text, some of Naranjo’s sculptures ______.

A.represent his own life B.show Native American culture

C.are based on images of veterans D.tell of what his ancestors have suffered

4Which would the author be least likely to agree with?

    A.Naranjo has overcome his disability.

B.Naranjo is successful due to his talent.

C.Naranjo’s works are rooted in his imagination.

D.Naranjo’s background contributed to his success.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    A Workaholic Economy

Although the output per hour of work has more than doubled since 1945, leisure seems reserved largely for the unemployed and underemployed. Those who work full-time spend as much time on the job as they did at the end of World War Ⅱ. In fact, working hours have increased noticeably since 1970. Bookstores now abound with manuals describing how to manage time and cope with stress.

There are mainly two reasons for lost leisure.

Since 1970, companies have responded to improvements in the business climate by having employees work overtime rather than by hiring extra personnel. Some firms are even downsizing as their profits climb. A host of factors pushes employers to hire fewer workers for more hours and, at the same time, compels workers to spend more time on the job. Most of those incentives(诱因) involve the structure of compensation(报酬). The way salaries and benefits are organized makes it more profitable to ask 40 employees to labor an extra hour each than to hire one more worker to do the same 40-hour job. Once people are on salary, their cost to a firm is the same whether they spend 35 hours a week in the office or 70. Therefore, it is more profitable for employers to work their existing employees harder.

For all that employees complain about long hours, they, too, have reasons not to trade money for leisure. “People who work reduced hours pay a huge penalty in career terms,” Bailyn of Massachusetts Institute of Technology maintains. “It’s taken as a negative signal about their commitment to the firm.” He adds that many corporate managers find it difficult to measure the contribution of their employees to a firm’s well-being, so they estimate staff productivity in terms of hours worked. Employees know this, and they adjust their behavior accordingly.
