二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Dear Sir/Madam,

As you know, next month will see the Have a Heart activity, which is a part of the heart research. As part of support for it, several students here at Trent High School have decided to organize a half-marathon event on August 1st. All the money that we hope to raise by doing this will go to Have a Heart.

In order to raise as much money as possible, we are doing two things: a) asking members of the public to sponsor (赞助) individual runners in the race, and b) looking for companies to help raising money. It is for this second reason that I am writing to you now.

As the leader of Trent High School’s half-marathon committee, I am writing to ask if your company would be willing to consider providing sponsorship for our event. What we had in mind, if you are agreeableis to put the sponsor’s name on the numbers of each runner, and to have the sponsor’s name on banners (横幅) along the way as well as at the finish line. We believe that our sponsor will get a lot of positive publicity.

It is difficult, of course, to make a request for a specific amount of money, but we are hoping that the company which sponsors us would do so to the amount of £1,000 or more, and would perhaps also contribute to the making of banners etc. We do hope that more people and companies can give your love to the heart research.

Should you be interested, please get in touch with us at the above address.

Thank you for giving our request your attention. We look forward to hearing from you.

    Yours faithfully,

    James MacDonald

    2The half-marathon committee promises to ________.

A.provide money to the public B.help the runners finish the race

3The main purpose of the letter is to ________.

A.ask the company for sponsorship B.invite people to the committee

  • 22、African countries have retrieved some historic relics(遗物), which reflects the important development of human society, from European countries. Recently, Germany signed a deal for the return of hundreds of valuable artworks from the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 19th century, in what is today Benin.

But many artifacts(手工艺品) are still unluckily missing and some are on their way back. One is an eight-legged seat from the old kingdom in Uganda. The important artifact now sits at a museum thousands of kilometers away in Britain. The wooden seat is housed at the University of Oxford. It is one of at least 279 relics there taken from the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom.

Apollo John Rwamparo is a leader of Uganda. He really values the country’s cultural relics. He requested the British to return the artifacts. Ugandan leaders are preparing to meet with the University of Cambridge in Britain about the return of such historical artifacts. The school has an unknown number of artifacts from Africa. Through many efforts,an artifact was returned to its home.

The British Museum holds a large collection of artifacts from Africa. Rose Mwanja said she had been trying hard on it and believed it could have some good effects. She is a director of Uganda’s museums. She added she could start with those that are more willing to cooperate.

Many of the artifacts from Africa cannot even be found. That led to an organization started by late Congolese art collector Sindika Dokolo. The organization offers to buy African art from collections in foreign countries, By 2020, when Dokolo died, his group had successfully recovered 15 items. However, for African governments, the recovery of artifacts remains a struggle and will take much time.

  • 23、Around the world, honeybee groups are dying in huge numbers: About one-third of nests collapse each year. For bees and the plants they pollinate (授粉) as well as for beekeepers, farmers, honey lovers and everyone else who appreciates this marvelous social insect this is a catastrophe.

Honeybee collapse has been particularly worrying because there is no one cause, but rather a thousand little cuts. The main elements include the mixed impact of pesticides (杀虫剂) applied to fields, as well as pesticides applied directly into nets to control bugs, pests and diseases; nutritional shortages caused by vast acreages of single-crop fields that lack diverse flowering plants; and commercial beekeeping itself, which destroys groups by moving most bees around the country multiple times each year to pollinate crops.

The real issue, though, is not the volume of problems, but the interactions among them. Here we find a major lesson from the bees that we ignore at our risk: the concept of synergy (协同作用), where one plus one equals three, or four, or more. A typical honeybee colony contains remains from more than 120 pesticides. Alone, each represents a benign dose (良性剂量). But together they form a poisonous soup of chemicals whose interplay (相互作用) can greatly reduce the effectiveness of bees’ immune systems, making them easier to suffer from diseases.

Observing the death of honeybees should warn us that our own well-being might be similarly threatened, and the widespread collapse of so many groups presents a clear message: We must demand that our regulatory authorities require studies on how exposure to low dosages of combined chemicals may affect human health before approving compounds.

Bees also provide some clues to how we may build a more collaborative relationship with the services that ecosystems can provide. Bees could offer some of the pollination service needed for agriculture. People discovered that crop harvests, and thus profits, are maximized if some cropland are left uncultivated for bees. Meanwhile a variety of wild plants means a healthier, more diverse bee population, which will then move to the planted fields next door in larger and more active numbers.

【1Which of the following is NOT the cause that leads to bees dying?

    A. Lack of nutrition from enough diverse flowering plants.

    B. The pests and diseases of the bees.

    C. The beekeepers’ destroying without intention

    D. The pesticides applied to crops.

【2】By saying “one plus one equals three, or four, or more” in Paragraph 3, the author means that ____.

    A. bees united mean they are much more powerful

    B. bees united mean they are much more poisonous

    C. pesticides mixed mean they are much more poisonous.

    D. pesticides mixed mean they are much more effective.

【3】The lesson people can learn from bees dying is that ____________.

    A. medicine is as powerful as pesticide

    B. our health might be threatened by pesticides

    C. we should protect bees by reducing the usage of pesticides

    D. medicine may be harmful to us when used together

【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A. Keeping a balance with nature is important

    B. More plants mean more and healthier bees.

    C. Bees are very important to agriculture.

    D. Bees can bring in good higher profits to farmers

  • 24、Today, the world's diversity (多样性) of food crops is quickly decreasing. But scientists around the world are taking action. They are building seed banks. At seed banks, scientists store the seeds of many different crops.

There are now about 1,400 seed banks around the world. However, some banks are in warm countries. If the electricity fails, the seeds will get too hot and die.Other seed banks are in countries troubled by war.Sometimes people damage the seed banks. If this happens, valuable seeds can be lost forever!

The organisation   Global   Crop   Diversity Trust decided they wanted to deal with this problem. So, they decided to build a global seed bank. This seed bank would contain a back-up, or extra copy, of all the world's seeds.Smaller seed banks would still collect and keep local seeds. But they would also send copies of their seeds to the global bank.

Scientists from the Global Crop Diversity Trust chose the cold, snowy mountains of Svalbard, Norway to build the global seed bank—the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (斯瓦尔巴全球种子库).Organisations, farmers, or local seed banks store their extra seeds there. And the people who place their seeds in the vault are the only people who can take them out. They pay to ship their seeds to Norway, but it does not cost them any money to store their seeds. The Global Crop Diversity Trust pays for this.

Cary Fowler is a scientist who heads the Global Crop Diversity Trust. He said, “If the Seed Vault simply supplies seed banks with copies of seeds that those banks lost by accident, the Seed Vault will be worth more than it cost.”

【1】What is the purpose of building the seed banks?

    A.To research on seeds.

    B.To produce new seeds.

    C.To protect crop diversity.

D.To increase the number of seeds.

【2】Compared with other seed banks, the global seed bank ________.

    A.was built by the government

    B.is more welcomed by farmers

C.is mainly used by great scientists

D.can provide a good environment for seeds

【3】What can we learn about the Svalbard Global Seed Vault?

A.It helps to pay the shipping cost.

B.No one can take seeds out of there.

C.There are no fees to store seeds there.

D.It mainly receives seeds from farmers.

【4】What is Cary Fowler's attitude towards the Seed Vault?

A.He feels it is very important.

    B.He is surprised at it.

C.He thinks it costs too much.

    D.He is uncertain about it.
