二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It seems as if social media platforms have taken over our lives. According to a study, there were over 3. 6 billion social media users in 2021. And that number is only expected to grow.

Although social media platforms have helped to keep friends and family connected, there is also a dark side to social media. To put it simply, it is a money making machine. This is partially because of social media influencers. A social media influencer is someone “who can shape audience’s attitudes through blogs, tweets, and the use of other social media”. You may be asking yourself, “Why would they want to do this, though?” The answer is simple: to make money. Social media influencers make money by promoting brands among their followers. In fact, influencer marketing is so profitable that the study reported that the industry is expected to reach $15 billion in value in 2022.

Social media influencers are now being called out because some of their actions have started to negatively impact the environment. One man in particular, who goes by Steve to remain anonymous(匿名的), noticed that some online influencers failed to follow rules when they went to national parks or public places. This included things like leaving garbage behind, or using drones(无人机) to take pictures from the sky.

Because of this, Steve made it his mission to stop social media influencers from hurting the environment with their bad behavior in order to get the “perfect shot”. In 2018, he made the account “Public Lands Hate You” to name and shame influencers who failed to follow the rules made to protect the environment. The account now has over 85 thousand followers.

He hoped that it could help some influencers find the light and right their wrongs. Steve said, “If everybody thought just a little bit more about their small actions and the impact those actions have on the environment and the people around them, I think that a lot of our bigger problems would be much more easily solved.”

【1】What feature of social media influencers is mainly shown in paragraph 2?

    A.Good communication.

    B.Chasing profits.

    C.Creative shows.

    D.Volunteering service.

【2】How does the writer present his idea in paragraph 3?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By offering data.

    C.By making comparisons.

    D.By explaining reasons.

【3】Why was “Public Lands Hate You” made?

A.To win wide attention and attract more fans.

B.To get the influencers aware of their wrong deeds.

C.To make public places inaccessible to influencers.

D.To inform the influencers of the places for perfect shots.

【4】What is implied from Steve’s words in the last paragraph?

    A.Well begun is half done.

    B.Practice makes perfect.

    C.Every bit of effort counts.

    D.Actions speak louder than words.

  • 22、An invisible smile

Mr. Dawson was an old grouch (脾气坏的人), and everyone in town knew it. Kids wouldn’t go into his yard to pick a delicious apple, even off the ground, because old Dawson, they said, would come after you with his ball bullet gun.

One Friday, 12-year-old Janet was going to stay all night with her friend Amy. They had to walk by Dawson’s house on the way to Amy’s house, but as they got close, Janet saw him sitting on his front porch (门廊) and suggested they cross over to the other side of the street. Like most of the children, she was scared of the old man because of the stories she’d heard about him.

Amy told her not to worry, for Mr. Dawson wouldn’t hurt anyone. Still, Janet was growing more nervous with each step closer to the old man’s house. When they got close enough, Dawson looked up with his usual frown (皱眉), but when he saw it was Amy, a broad smile changed his entire face as he said, “Hello, Miss Amy. I see you’ve got a little friend with you today.”

Amy smiled back and told him Janet was staying overnight and they were going to listen to music and play games. Dawson told them that sounded fun, and offered them each a fresh apple picked off his tree. They gladly accepted. Dawson had the best apples in town.

When they got out of Dawson on earshot, Janet asked Amy, “Everyone says he’s the meanest (吝啬) man in town. How come he was so nice to us?”

Amy explained that when she first started walking past his house, he wasn’t very friendly and she was afraid of him, but she pretended he was wearing an invisible smile and so she always smiled back at him. It took a while, but one day he half-smiled back at her.

After some more time, he started smiling real smiles and then started talking to her. Just a “hello” at first, then more. She said he always offers her an apple now, and is always very kind.

    “An invisible smile?” questioned Janet.

“Yes,” answered Amy, “my grandma told me that if I pretended I wasn’t afraid and pretended he was smiling an invisible smile at me and I smiled back at him, that _____________. Grandma says smiles can spread.”

If we remember what Amy’s grandma said, that everyone wears an invisible smile, we too will find that most people can’t resist (抵制) our smiles after a while.

【1】Kids were scared of Mr. Dawson because ______________.

A.he didn’t allow them to get into his yard

B.he would beat them with a gun

C.he was mean with his apples

    C.grew nervous

    D.became excited

【3】Which of the following sentences can be put in the blank in the last but one paragraph?

A.he would get angry with any passer-by

B.he would give in to have a forced smile

C.sooner or later he would really smile

D.he would pick a fallen apple to share it

【4】We can infer from the passage that ______________.

A.Dawson had the best apples in town

B.It was Grandma’s advice that helped bring Amy and Mr. Dawson together

C.When Amy first started walking past his house, he was very friendly to Amy

D.The reason why Amy and Janet got fresh apples was that Janet always wore an invisible smile

【5】Which of the following is the theme that the passage conveys?

    A.Practice makes perfect.

    B.Great minds think alike.

    C.Actions speak louder than words.

D.Smile can shorten the distance between people.

  • 24、Away from the bright lights of the city, if you look up at the night sky you will see an ocean of bright stars. But in the illuminated concrete jungles we humans have built ourselves, it’s a different story.

This year, Earth Hour was observed on March 26. The annual tradition, started by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, was created to raise awareness for climate change. Those celebrating turn off all their electrical appliances for one hour. It also draws attention to another serious problem that the world is currently facing — the threat of light pollution.

Light pollution happens when too much man-made light harms nature. Scientists have found that it is especially harmful to nocturnal animals. These creatures rely on the natural light cycle provided by the movement of the sun to help coordinate their sleep cycles. When this is disturbed by constant bright lights from man-made structures, it can seriously disorientate the animals and harm their physical health. “Wildlife species have evolved on this planet with biological rhythms — changing that has profound effects,” said Travis Longcore, a biogeographer with the Urban Wildlands Group in Los Angeles, US. A lack of darkness at night can also cause difficulties for animals in other ways.

Newly hatched (孵化) baby sea turtles rely on the brighter horizon over the ocean to guide them from the beach to the sea. However, with artificial lights next to the oceans, the small animals are easily led away from the right path. “Hatchlings are attracted to lights and crawl inland, or crawl aimlessly down the beach, sometimes until dawn, when predators or birds get them,” said Michael Salmon, a biologist at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.

Artificial light has caused a “drastic change” to the natural environment of animals, research scientist Christopher Kyba told the International Dark-Sky Association. “Predators use light to hunt, and prey (猎物) species use darkness as cover,” Kyba explained. If a predator has such an extra advantage in hunting its prey, this can lead to an imbalance in the ecosystem as the hunted species are no longer able to maintain their population when they become over-hunted.

    【1】Why was Earth Hour created?

A.To raise awareness of air pollution.

B.To call on people to get closer to nature.

C.To draw public attention to environmental issues.

D.To reconsider the necessity of electrical devices.

【2】How does light pollution affect nocturnal animals?

    A.It slows their growth.

    B.It changes their sleep cycles.

C.It lessens their dependence on the sun.

D.It reduces their difficulties caused by darkness.

【3】What trouble does artificial lighting cause baby sea turtles?

A.It can prevent them from reaching the ocean.

B.It can affect their biological rhythms.

C.It makes them lose their way to the beach.

D.It exposes them to predators in the sea.

【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.The argument over artificial lights.

B.Animals that benefit from artificial lights.

C.The impact of artificial lights on environment.

D.The dangers of an imbalance in the ecosystem.
