二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Drive through any suburb in the U.S. Today, and it’s hard to miss the recycling bins that have become companions to America’s trash cans. Recycling has become common, as people recognize the need to care for the environment. Yet most people’s recycling consciousness extends only as far as paper, bottles, and cans. People seldom find themselves facing the growing problem of e-waste.

E-waste rapidly increases as the techno- fashionable frequently upgrade to the most advanced devices, and the majority of them end up in landfills (垃圾填埋地). Some people who track such waste say that users throw away nearly 2 million tons of TVs, VCRs, computers, cell phones, and other electronics every year. Unless we can find a safe replacement, this e-waste may get into the ground and poison the water with dangerous toxins (毒素), such as lead, mercury, and arsenic. Burning the waste also dangerously contaminates the air.

However, e-waste often contains reusable silver, gold, and other electrical materials. Recycling these materials reduces environmental problems by reducing both landfill waste and the need to look for such metals, which can destroy ecosystems.

A growing number of states have adopted laws to ban dumping e-waste. Still, less than a quarter of this waste will reach lawful recycling programs. Some companies advertising safe disposal in fact merely ship the waste to some developing countries, where it still ends up in landfills. These organizations prevent progress by unsafely disposing of waste in an out- of- sight, out- of- mind location.

However, the small but growing number of cities and corporations that do handle e- waste responsibly represents progress toward making the world a cleaner, better place for us all.

1What can we infer from the first paragraph?

    A. Many Americans now have access to recycling bins.

    B. E-waste cannot be put into trash cans in the U.S.

    C. Most Americans have realized the dangers of e-waste.

    D. Most of America’s trash cans are made of recycled material.

2What can best replace the underlined word “contaminates” in Paragraph 2?

    A. pollutes.   B. heats.

    C. absorbs.   D. reduces.

3How does the author feel about burying e-waste in landfills?

    A. It’s important.   B. It’s unsafe.

    C. It’s acceptable.   D. It’s uncommon.

4What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text?

    A. To tell us how to recycle e-waste.

    B. To talk about the future of e-waste.

    C. To discuss if it’s necessary to recycle e-waste.

    D. To encourage us to deal with e-waste properly.

  • 23、Soil creates life from death. The production of more than 95% of the food we eat relies on soil. But this precious resource is eroding (侵蚀) at a global average of 13.5 tons per hectare per year. Instead of nourishing crops, fertile topsoil is washed and blown away, ending up in inconvenient places such as ditches and oceans.

Jo Handelsman and Kayla Cohen try to make readers care about soil in A World Without Soil. Their prologue (前言) takes the form of a letter to the government. With the letter, they hope to make soil management a federal priority. The following chapters cover the basic science of soil as well as the causes and consequences of its erosion. In the last part of the book, the authors turn to possible solutions—many of them simple, and some centuries old. They describe about traditional soil management techniques, including planting diverse crops in rotation (轮种), increasing organic content, ploughing as little as possible, etc. With these techniques, farmers are able to produce rich agricultural production while maintaining deep banks of fertile soil.

Why, then, is fertile soil being allowed to be washed and blown away? The answer, not surprisingly, rests in global capitalism. Farmers' profit is thin, forcing farmers to plant the highest-profit crop from field to field every season. To ensure food security, Handelsman and Cohen urge the world to demand a real top-down change in how agricultural production is managed. "The burden of protecting soil cannot be shifted to farmers and environmental activists," they note. Governments must begin to move towards a model in which farmers are less independent business people growing and selling food, and more government-supported land workers managing both food production and soil protection. This should be the core of agriculture.

Our land and soil are too precious to be destroyed by the market price of crops. We must invest deeply and thoughtfully in our farmers so that they can invest deeply and thoughtfully in the land. This is the future of farming.

【1】What is paragraph 1 mainly about?

A.The gradual process of losing soil.

B.The worrying situation of soil erosion.

C.The alarming decrease of food output.

D.The great significance of soil protection.

【2】What do we know about the book A World Without Soil?

A.It targets federal officials as its main readers.

B.It puts forward some practical solutions to soil loss.

C.It advocates changing traditional farming techniques.

D.It blames governments for not taking care of farmlands.

【3】What do Handelsman and Cohen suggest farmers do?

A.Invest in the most profitable crops.

B.Grow and sell food all by themselves.

C.Shoulder the burden of protecting soil.

D.Work the land with government support.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.A Call to Save Soil

    B.Tips to Reshape Agriculture

    C.Ways to Enrich Farmland

D.An Appeal to Guarantee Food Supply

  • 24、   If you think about it, work-life balance is a strange ambition for a fulfilling life. Balance is about stasis: if our lives were ever in balance-parents happy, kids taken care of, work working-then our overriding thought would be to shout “Nobody move!” and pray all would stay perfect forever. This false hope is made worse by the categories themselves. They imply that work is bad, and life is good. And so the challenge, we are told, is to balance the heaviness of work with the lightness of life.

Yet work is not the opposite of life. It is instead a part of life-just as family is, as are friends and community. All of these aspects of living have their share of uplifting moments and moments that drag us down. The same is true of work. Treat work the same way you do life: by maximizing what you love.

We have interviewed several anesthesiologists (麻醉师) about the thrills they feel in their jobs. One said he loved the thrill of holding each patient hovering at that one precise point between life and death. Another said she loved the bedside conversations before the operation aiming to calm the panic that affects many patients. Another was drawn mostly to the anesthetic mechanism and has devoted himself to defining precisely how each drug does what it does.

Think of your life’s many different activities as threads. Some are black and some are white. But some of these activities appear to be made of a different substance. These activities contain all the tell-tale signs of love: before you do them, you find yourself looking forward to them; while you’re doing them, time speeds up and you find yourself in flow; and after you’ve done them, you feel energetic. These are your red threads, and research by the Mayo Clinic suggests that doctors who weave the fabric of their life with at least 20% red threads are significantly less likely to experience burnout.

The simplest way for you to do this is to spend a week in love with your job. During the week, any time you find yourself feeling one of the signs of love write down exactly what you were doing in the column “Love”. And any time you find yourself feeling the inverse write down what you were doing in the column “Loathe”. By the end of the week you will see a list of activities in your “Love” column, which create in you a positive feeling, one that draws you in and lifts you up.

Our goal should be to, little by little, week by week, intentionally unbalance all aspects of our work toward the former and away from the latter. Not simply to make us feel better, but so that our colleagues, our friends and our family can all benefit from us at our very best.

1What is the author’s attitude towards work-life balance?

    A.Doubtful. B.Disapproving.

    C.Supportive. D.Neutral.

2The author uses three anesthesiologists as examples to ________.

    A.prove people benefit from work

B.indicate doctors take pride in their work

C.show people gain joy from different situations

D.imply doctors reduce the pressure of work successfully

3“Red threads” in Paragraph 4 refer to the activities that ________.

A.arouse your passion B.satisfy your desires

C.improve your motivation D.require your efforts

4Which of the following does the author probably agree with?

A.Red threads are necessary for a balanced life.

B.Recording activities helps create positive feeling.

C.Find love in work instead of keeping work-life balance.

D.Maximize what you love to remove the heaviness from work.
