21、Our “Mommy and Me” time began two years ago. My next-door neighbor and fellow mother, Christie, and I were out in our front yards, watching seven children of age 6 and under ride their bikes up and down. “I wish I could take one of my children out alone,” said Christie.
Then we worked out a plan: When Christie takes one of her children out, I’ll watch her other three. And when she watches two of mine, I’ll take someone out.
The children were extremely quick to accept the idea of “Mommy and Me” time. Christie’s daughter, McKenzie, went first. When she returned, the other children asked her tons of questions. McKenzie was smiling broadly. Christie looked refreshed and happy. “She’s like a different child when there’s no one else around,” Christie shared with me quickly. With her mother all to herself, McKenzie didn’t have to make an effort to gain attention.
Just as Christie had noticed changes in McKenzie, I also discovered something different in each of my children during our alone times. For example, I am always surprised when my daughter, who is seldom close to me, holds my hand frequently. My stuttering(口吃的)son, Tom, doesn’t stutter once during our activities since he doesn’t have to struggle for a chance to speak. And the other son, Sam, who’s always a follower when around other children shines as a leader during our times together.
The “Mommy and Me” time allows us to be simply alone and away with each child ---talking, sharing, and laughing, which has been the biggest gain. Every child deserves to be an only child at least once in a while.

22、Three Japanese tourists taking a holiday in Australia got stuck when their GPS to1d them they could drive from the mainland to an island, failing to mention the 15 kilometres of water and mud in between.
As they drove their hired car from Moreton Bay to nearby North Stradbroke Island, they started to notice the firm surface they were driving on giving way to the well-known bay mud. However, being confident that their GPS would direct them to a road soon, they decided to drive on,managing to travel around 500 metres before their car was up to its tires in mud.To make matters worse, the tide(潮汐)started to come in and soon forced them to seek help and abandon the vehicle.Just four hours later the car was trapped m two metres of water —to the great amusement of onlookers on the shore and passengers on passing boats and ferries.
Yuzu Noda,21,said she was listening to the GPS and“it told us we could drive down there. It kept saying it would navigate(导航)US to a road. But we got stuck…there's lots of mud”.She and her travel companions Tomonari Saeki,22,and Keita Osada,21,instead had to give up their plans for a day trip to the island and headed back to the Gold Coast of a lift from the RACQ tow truck(吊车)driver who was called to the trapped car. No such luck for the hired car, though—after assessing the situation,no attempt was made to recover it.The students from Tokyo, who are due to return home tomorrow, said the experience would not put them off returning to Australia for another visit. Mr·Tomonari said,“It has rained every day on our six day holiday.Hopefully next time we come back it will be sunny.”
The car was covered by insurance, but the tourists will have to pay up to about $1500 in extra charges.

23、Without less public attention, the nation’s egg producers are in the midst of a multibillion-dollar shift to cage-free eggs that is dramatically changing the lives of millions of hens in response to new laws and demands from restaurant chains. In a decade, the percentage of hens in cage-free housing has soared from 4% in 2010 to 28% in 2020, and that figure is expected to more than double to about 70% in the next four years.
The change marks one of the animal welfare movement’s biggest successes after years of battles with the food industry. The transition has cost billions of dollars for producers who initially resisted calls for more humane treatment of chickens but have since fully embraced the new reality.
Beginning in about 2015, many companies such as McDonald’s, Burger King responded to pressure from animal welfare groups by announcing their commitment to cage-free eggs. That was followed by laws requiring cage-free housing in California and similar rules in at least seven other states. Meanwhile, they widely promoted their move to cage-free as good for their brand’s image.
Animal rights groups have made allowing animals room to move a priority in their campaigns but the results have been mixed. The pork industry is fighting to block the California initiative that required more space for breeding pigs, and a state judge recently delayed implementation of new rules.
Looking years into the future, egg company leaders said they think the demand for cheaper eggs from caged hens will remain roughly 25% or more of the market, but Balk at the Humane Society said he expects it to become a tiny percentage of overall sales. Balk notes that hundreds of national retailers, restaurants, grocers and food manufacturers either have implemented cage-free requirements or plan to do so within a few years. “This is the future of every state in America,” he said.
【1】What’s Balk’s attitude towards the promotion of cage-free eggs?
A.Doubtful.
B.Positive.
C.Objective.
D.Pessimistic.
【2】What does the underlined word in Para 2 mean?
A.Accepted.
B.Abandoned.
C.Changed.
D.Adapted.
【3】Which of the following statements is NOT right?
A.There have been some laws or rules requiring cage-free housing in some parts of the USA so far.
B.Egg producers have to deal with the sharp increase in the exact cost of the switch
C.Animal rights groups have successfully made allowing animals room to move a priority in their campaigns.
D.Many companies like Mc Donald’s widely promoted their move to cage-free as good for their brand’s image.
【4】What’s the best title for the text?
A.Animal well-fare groups’ request will be well achieved
B.More U.S. Eggs Will Soon Be Cage-Free
C.Consumers will have to pay more to eat eggs
D.Egg producers will experience dramatic changes to adapt
24、 The universe is expanding faster than it used to, meaning it’s about a billion years younger than we thought, a new study by a Nobel Prize winner says.
At issue is a number called the Hubble constant, a calculation for how fast the universe is expanding. Some scientists call it the most important number in cosmology, the study of the origin and development of the universe.
Using NASAS Hubble Space Telescope, lohns Hopkings University astronomer Adam Riess concluded in this week’s Astrophysical Journal that the figure is 9% higher than the previous calculation, which was based on studying leftovers from the Big Bang.
The trouble is, Riess and others think both calculations are correct. Confused? That’s OK, so are the experts. They find the conflict so confusing that they are talking about coming up with “new physics”, incorporating (合作) perhaps some yet-to-be-discovered particle or other cosmic (宇宙) “fudge factors” like dark energy or dark matter
“Its looking more and more like were going to need something new to explain this,” said Reiss, who won the 2011 Nobel in physics.
NASA astrophysicist John Mather, another Nobel winner, said this leaves two obvious options, “1. We’re making mistakes we can’t find yet. 2. Nature has something we can’t find yet.”
Even with the discovery, life continues on Earth the way it always has. But to astrophysicists trying to get a handle on our place in this expanding universe, this is a cosmic concern. In fact, the universe is really mystical (神秘的). Scientists have done lots of study about it but there is still much they haven’t discovered.
【1】What is the finding of the new study?
A.The earth is younger than expected.
B.Many universal problems are rising.
C.The universe is growing faster than before.
D.The finding is based on past scientists’ calculations.
【2】What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A.The Hubble constant. B.The faster expanding universe.
C.The development of the universe. D.The scientific research on the universe.
【3】How do the experts respond to the conflict of the finding in Paragraph 4?
A.They want to raise a new theory.
B.They want to explore dark matter.
C.They want to further calculate the finding.
D.They want to mix together both calculations.
【4】What can we infer from John Mather’s words?
A.We cannot find anything useful.
B.Astronomers are making many mistakes.
C.We need to learn about the universe.
D.We cannot find something new from nature.
