二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   When I first catch sight of Greta Thunberg, it is eight in the morning, and a small crowd has already gathered. It is a Friday, her day of protest, and the 16-year-old is standing outside the parliament(议会) building, next to a sign saying “School strike for climate” in Swedish.

This is the 26th week of her protest, which has taken place every Friday since school started last August. Her goal is to bring Sweden in line with the 2016 Paris Agreement, which promises to limit global warming to below 2, compared with pre-industrial levels.

Over the past six months, Greta has rocketed to a level of fame and influence that pretty much nobody, including herself, expected. Her protest was quickly highlighted by the media. Then came a TED talk and an invitation to address last December’s U.N. climate talks in Poland.

While Greta may seem an unlikely climate activist, it was not entirely accidental that she became one. Like many children, Greta watched educational films about the melting Arctic and the fate of the polar bears and the marine mammals bloated (肿胀) with plastic. But unlike other children, she couldn’t let them go. “I became very affected. I began thinking about it all the time.” said Greta.

Greta began researching climate change and has been staying on the topic for six years. She has stopped eating meat and buying anything that isn’t necessary. In 2015, Greta stopped flying on airplanes, and a year later, her mother followed her example, giving up an international performing career. The family has started growing their own vegetables on his own garden outside the city. To meet me in central Stockholm, Greta and her father rode their bikes for about half an hour, although the family has an electric car that they use only when necessary.

1What can be inferred from the second paragraph?

A.Industry in Sweden is developing too fast.

B.School climate education remains to be improved.

C.The climate around the world has increased by 2.

D.Sweden should do more to meet the Paris Agreement.

2Why did Greta become the focus of media attention?

A.She was expected to be famous.

B.She was invited to the TED talk.

C.She skipped school for the protest.

D.She was active in the protest as a child.

3What makes Greta devoted to climate activities?

    A.The educational programs.

B.Her speech at U.N. climate talks.

C.Her great concern about climate change.

D.The protest of “School strike for climate”

4What happened after Greta became a climate activist?

    A.She moved to the countryside.

    B.She had an eco-friendly life.

    C.She followed her mother’s example.

D.She gave up her work for her research.

  • 22、Scientists found a single dose of the protein Hila worked on lab rats. They said it showed “great promise as a future stroke treatment” but had not yet been tested in human trials.

The researchers travelled to Fraser Island in Australia to hunt for and capture three potentially deadly Australian funnel web spiders. They then took the spiders back to their laboratory “for milking”.

This involved coaxing the spider into releasing its venom, which can then be sucked up using pipettes(吸管). The scientists make a careful study of a protein in the venom and recreated a version of it in their lab.

They then injected this Hila into the lab rats. They found that the protein blocked acid-sensing ion channels in the brain-something the researchers say are key drivers of brain damage after stroke.

Professor Glenn King, who led the research, said, “We believe that we have, for the first time, found a way to minimize the effects of brain damage after a stroke. Hila even provides some protection to the core brain region most affected by oxygen deprivation, which is generally considered unrecoverable due to the rapid cell death caused by stroke.”

Dr. Kate Holmes, deputy director for Research at the Stroke Association, said, “We welcome any treatment that has the potential to reduce the damage caused by stroke, particularly if this can benefit people who are unable to arrive at hospital quickly.”

A stroke is a brain attack that happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off or there is bleeding on the brain. Every two seconds, someone in the world will have a stoke. Stroke is the second most common cause of death, causing about6.7million deaths each year, one every five seconds. Almost one in every eight deaths is caused by stroke.

【1】Which of the following is the last step of the research?

A.Inject the protein into lab rats.

    B.Obtain the deadly spiders’ venom.

    C.Catch three deadly spiders.

D.Recreate a version of the protein.

B.A promising cure for stroke is probably on the way.

C.Spiders are contributing to the treatment of strokes.

D.Stroke is the second biggest killer of in the world.

【4】What purpose does the last paragraph serve?

    A.To summarize the passage.

    B.To introduce the topic.

    C.To provide the background.

    D.To support the argument.

  • 23、   If you watch nature documentaries, it's easy to come away with the impression that grand tropical forests have been largely undisturbed until modern times. However, in the last two decades, scientific data have shown that, actually, human societies have occupied and changed these environments over many million years.

Patrick Roberts, from the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History, says some of the trees alive in tropical forests are up to a thousand years old. And they're sort of like time capsules, storing a record of past human activity in their tree rings, chemistry and DNA. So he wanted to see how different existing methods might come together to explore past tree populations, tree growth, tree ages by looking at the largest witnesses of the changes in human activity in the tropics—the trees themselves.

For example, native peoples of the Amazon basin planted Brazil nuts for thousands of years. Roberts' colleague Victor Caetano-Andrade analyzed tree rings to determine the age and growth rates of Brazil nut trees near the city of Manaus. He found that many trees were established in the late 1600s, but there was a steep drop-off in new trees around the middle of the 18th century.

As colonial communities came into Manaus and developed the city, they drove the natives out, often killing them. And what Victor found is that, actually, their growth slowed after this period without these traditional management strategies.

Another example is how communities selected for genetic features in a variety of tropical trees, such as the cocoa tree-used, of course, to make chocolate. A more detailed full genome analysis of this plant has shown that humans may have even selected genes that reduced bitterness and improved its resistance to disease for their own economic benefit.

Roberts says recognizing tropical trees as time capsules of cultural heritage gives us yet another reason to protect them. “Not just because of their ecological benefits, which are hugely significant, but also the information that they store about human history, about our past. ”

【1】What does the underlined phrase “time capsules” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Old trees.

    B.Human history.

    C.Human activities.

    D.Cultural heritage.

    A.Natural disasters.

    B.Colonial invasions.

    C.Ecological benefits.

    D.Natural selection.

    【3】How is the text organized?

    A.By providing examples.

    B.By making a summary.

    C.By drawing comparisions.

    D.By producing a classification.

【4】What do we know from the text?

    A.Tropical forests need traditional management.

B.Tropical forests have witnessed human history.

C.Tropical forests have been protected for economic benefits,

D.Tropical forests have been undisturbed until modern times.
