二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   As we live longer and technology continues its rapid development, we can imagine a future where machines will enlarge our human abilities and help us make better life choices, from health to wealth. Through our dialogue and digital pieces, AI will understand our life goals and wishes, our duties and limitations. It will help us plan different life events, so we can spend more time enjoying life’s moments.

The ability for artificial intelligence to understand the complexities and slight differences of human conversation is, however, one hurdle. There are several thousand known living languages in the world today. Adding to the difficulties are the varied ways words are shared and used across different cultures, including grammar, levels of education and styles of the speakers. Google Duplex, the technology supporting Google Assistant, which places phone calls using a natural-sounding human voice instead of a robotic one, is an early attempt to address such challenges in human communications. But these are just initial whispers in voice of AI’s long journey.

Beyond making reservations and conducting simple dialogues, virtual assistants will need to become far more useful and further fit into the parts of our everyday lives. Not only will they need to foresee what we need before we ask, they also need to understand the context of our conversations and react accordingly. Imagine a snow day when school is canceled for the kids. Knowing that you must now stay at home with your children, your phone would remind you, asking if you’d like your meetings moved to the following day. Alternatively, imagine how much more pleasant your journey home from a business trip would be if your phone could automatically arrange for a ride waiting to pick you up at the airport, based on your travel plan, location, and habits. The possibilities are endless.

1What do we know about AI?

A.They narrow our abilities. B.They limit our better choice.

C.They don’t know our limitations. D.They help us enjoy life better.

2What makes it hard for AI to understand what humans say?

A.Low level of speakers. B.Imperfection of AI.

C.Varieties of languages and cultures. D.Similarities between languages.

3Which word can best describe the author’s attitude towards AI?

    A.Doubtful. B.Approving.

    C.Negative. D.Critical.

4Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

    A.AI Will Replace Humans

B.AI Will Set Goals for Us.

C.AI Will Be Part of Our Daily Lives.

    D.AI Will Meet Challenges.

  • 22、   The palm - forward (掌心向外) "V" sign, formed by raising and spreading the wrist two fingers, has three different meanings in American culture.

The most popular meaning of the "V" sign was invented in 1941 by a Belgian, Victor De Lavalaye. Wanting a symbol for resistance to the Nazi occupation, he came up with the single letter "V", which stood not only for his own first name, but also for English victory, Flemish virijheid, and French victoire.  The symbolism of the sign spread very quickly, and Winston Churchill used it constantly in public appearance.  Thus throughout the 1940s and 1950s, the gesture meant simply" victory " .

The second meaning came in the 1960s.  Because of its military implication, American antiwar protestors used the sign sarcastically (讽刺地) against the arms, so that it became known as the "peace sign". In the 1970s, the "W' sign, which had lost its military implication, was a common greeting among freedom lovers , acid heads, political radicals, and ultimately, young people in general. So by about the middle of the 1970s, it no longer gave clue to the user's philosophy.

The third meaning is the oldest and least common. American children jokingly put " V" ,  which resembles "horns", behind friends-heads in group snapshot. They are unknowingly reproducing something that southern Europeans would find highly offensive. This mischief, called "horns of the Devil", is a variant of the European "horns" gesture, which is obscene (猥亵的). Here the "w' sign means "Your wife has been cheating on you or, when placed behind another's head, his wife has been cheating on him. "

In the United States, the gesture is typically given with the palm facing the viewer. The British use both this version and an older, palm - backward version ; the latter is obscene in American culture, and corresponds to the American "finger". Churchill got some surprised stares in 1941 when, evidently unaware of the mean usage, he gave the palm - backward "V" to British troops. In England today you could have to be a social hermit not to understand the distinction. Astonishingly, however, Margaret Thatcher repeated Churchill's error after her victory in the 1979 election.

1What's the most popular meaning of the "V" sign?

    A. Victory, B. Peace.

    C. Cheat. D. Freedom.

2Why did Churchill get some surprised stares according to the last paragraph?

    A. He was proud of his troops.

    B. He had wanted to be a hermit.

    C. He wasn't insensible of the mean usage of the "V" sign.

    D. He wanted to show congratulations to British troops.

3What can be learned from the text?

    A. The "V" sign simply means victory since 1941.

    B. The "V" sign meaning peace was invented by a Belgian.

    C. Thatcher made the same error as Churchill after her successful election.

    D. American antiwar protestors used the sign to greet among freedom lovers.

4What can we conclude from the passage?

    A. It's never too old to learn.

    B. Think well before you speak.

    C. Actions speak louder than words.

    D. Try to know culture diversity fully and regionally.

We’ve all been there. You’re around new people and you just want to impress them. It can be easy to pretend you know about movies, politics, or science just to get through an awkward situation. But contrary to what feels most natural, a new series of five studies from Pepperdine University shows that those who can admit when they don’t know something tend to actually have more knowledge. If you want to make those people think you’re smart, maybe the best thing to say is “I don’t know.”

For the study, which was led by Elizabeth Krumrei-Mancuso, the team of researchers had one question: Is there a knowledge benefit to admitting intellectual fallibility? To find out, they ran not one, not two, but five separate experiments. They engaged nearly 1,200 participants in their study, and evaluated them using a number of questionnaires testing their cognitive abilities, measuring their own predictions of their cognitive abilities, and, of course, rating their levels of intellectual humility.

For that last part, they used different methods in different studies to get a more wellrounded set of results. One IH survey used eight questions to assess participants on two elements: the “KnowingItAll” subscale, which judged their attitudes of intellectual superiority, and the “Intellectual Openness” subscale, which assessed how open they were to learning from others. In other studies, they used the 22-question “Comprehensive Intellectual Humility Scale,” which assesses participants on four elements: independence of intellect and ego, openness to revising one’s viewpoint, respect for others’ viewpoints, and lack of intellectual overconfidence. The five studies were used to examine past learning, thinking styles, traits, and motivations.

What the researchers may agree is that the best thing to remember is that curiosity seems to be a good thing. The world is big, and it’s impossible to know everything. At your next dinner party, ask questions and admit your own cluelessness. It might make you a little less clueless next time.

1Why did Elizabeth Krumrei-Mancuso led the study

A.to find out whether admitting that you don’t know something is beneficial.

B.to find the certain benefit of admitting intellectual disability.

C.to compare the modest people with proud people.

D.to stress the importance of curiosity.

2From the article, we can learn that .

A.we all tend to pretend we have a good command of knowledge.

B.the study engaged over 1,200 participants in their study.

C.”I don’t know” may be a good answer to people who ask you if you are clever.

D.a number of questionnaires are used to test participants’ cognitive humility.

3What is the best title of the article

    A.Be yourself! B.Admitting your fallibility!

C.Express your drawbacks! D.Let curiosity lead you!

  • 24、   Rats and other animals need to be highly tuned to social signals from others so that can identify friends to cooperate with and enemies to avoid. To find out if this extends to non-living beings, Loleh Quinn at the University of California, San Diego, and her colleagues tested whether rats can detect social signals form robotic rats.

They housed eight adult rats with two types of robotic rat—one social and one asocial (不爱社交的)—for 5 our days. The robotic rats resembled a bigger version of a computer mouse with wheels to move around and colorful markings.

During the experiment, the social robot rat followed the living rats around, played with the same toys, and opened caged doors to let trapped rats escape. Meanwhile, the asocial robot simply moved forwards and backwards and side to side.

Next, the researchers trapped the robots in cages and gave the rats the opportunity to release them by pressing a button. Across 18 trials each, the living rats were 52 percent more likely on average to set the social robot free than the asocial one. This suggests that the rats perceived the social robot as a genuine social being. They may have bonded more with the social robot, because it displayed behaviours like communal (共同的) exploring and playing. “This could lead to the rats better remembering having freed it earlier, and wanting the robot to return the favour when they get trapped,” says Quinn.

The readiness of the rats to befriend the social robot was surprising given its plain design. The finding shows how sensitive rats are to social signals, even when they come from basic robots. Similarly, children tend to treat robots as if they are fellow beings, even when they display simple social signals. “We humans seem to be fascinated by robots, and it turns out other animals are too,” says Wiles.

【1】Quin and her colleagues conducted a test to see if rats can ________.

A.pick up social signals from non-living rats

    B.distinguish friends from enemies

    C.learn sociable skills through training

D.send out warning messages to their fellows

【2】What did the social robot do during the experiment?

    A.It followed the asocial robot.

    B.It made friends with toys.

C.It set the trapped rats free.

    D.It moved around alone.

【3】Why did the rats release the social robot according to Quinn?

A.They tried to practice a means of escape.

B.They expected it to do the same in return.

C.They wanted to display their intelligence

D.They considered it an interesting game.

【4】What can we learn from the text?

A.Rats are highly adaptable to new surroundings.

B.Rats are more socially active than other animals.

C.Rats behave differently from children in socializing.

D.Rats are more sensitive to social signals than expected.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Winter sports can help you burn calories, increase your cardiovascular fitness, and strengthen muscles. Being outdoors and getting exercise are great for your mental health. Exercise boosts mood, and sunlight seems to help beat back the winter blues. So slap on some sunblock and go.

Winter is a great time to experiment with new sports. If you like to walk, keep walking-on snowshoes. If you want to try an endurance sport, go for cross-country skiing. And snowboarding is just plain fun. Runners can also train during the winter, although beware of wet or slippery roads. Or slip on a pair of snowshoes. One of the easiest sports around, snowshoeing can be excellent cold-weather cross-training for runners and cyclists - or anyone wanting to take a wintry walk in the woods.

Whatever sport you choose, don't rely on a friend for instruction. You wouldn't let an amateur perform brain surgery on you; why let one teach you to ski or skate? That's what instructors are for- to help newcomers start out right. Instructors can give you advice about equipment, techniques, safety, and dealing with injuries if they do happen you.

It's tempting for an eager athlete to advance too quickly through learning the ropes. Resist the temptation. If you want to progress, invest your time in learning the basics thoroughly. Everything else you do as a skier, boarder, or skater will be built on these first skills.

Play safely by figuring out what, special equipment and safety gear you'll need. Planning an afternoon of snowshoeing or cross-country skiing? Pack water, snacks, fruit, and extra socks. If you're going out for a long time, keep your water bottle insulated from the cold so it doesn't freeze.

Don't head out onto the slopes or into remote country areas alone. Always go with a buddy and tell a friend what time you plan on returning. If you get in trouble and don't show up when you are supposed to, your friend has your back.
