21、 After graduating as a graphic design major in 2018, Chen Minlin didn't hunt for a job that fits it, but became a trekker(远足者).
“Completing different trekking routes is like collecting cards in childhood-a lot of fun,” the 24-year-old told China Daily.
Like Chen, more young people are going on journeys to rediscover the simple and beneficial joys of walking. According to Youxiake,a Hangzhou-based tour operator, more than 140,000 travelers signed up for trekking trips from May 1 to Oct 31. This represents a 9. 3 percent increase over the same period last year.
For most trekkers, exploring nature by foot can help them keep fit. Hiking or trekking in nature enables them to breathe fresh air, gives the whole body a workout and keeps them away from the crowds in urban public places, making for a tranquil experience.
“I felt that exposure to nature and physical exhaustion helped me counteract the negative effects of my distress(痛苦)at that time,” Zhang Peng,33, co-founder of Beijing Hiking Club, said. Trekking “is a liberating experience to enjoy the tranquility in the wilderness. And the exhausting climb makes me feel the vigor(活力) of life.”
Trekking has, indeed, been integrated into his lifestyle. With great passion, Zhang has gone on many classic routes across the country. The longest trail he's ever finished was 240 kilometers.
With poor internet access in the wild, it encourages people to chat and interact with one another on the long walks along the trails. Zhang enjoys the social interaction, and the friendships it brings about.
For Liu Yanli, also a trekker, what she cherishes most is that the activity brings her mental strength.
Until this year, her life had always run smoothly and lacked hardship. She craved the sense of achievement that can be felt after overcoming the difficulties offered by trekking.
Ever since 2013, she's trekked in many countries, including Nepal, Japan, Greece, New Zealand, Italy and Jordan. In one situation, she felt she was at the point of collapsing, but she carried on. “I was impressed and moved by my willpower. I'd never experienced that feeling in my daily life,” Liu said.
It's perhaps this unusual feeling that appeals to more youths. “Each time when I came back from a trip, the contrast between the harsh conditions in the wild and my cozy home helps to strengthen my happiness in everyday life,” Liu added.

22、Like most couples, my husband and I dreamed of becoming homeowners. Sure, apartment living comes with its own set of advantages—less housework, shared comfort, less to clean up and care for, and usually cheaper rent. As a result, we decided to downgrade from our neat five-bedroom, 2,700-square-foot house on the water to a three-bedroom, 1,369-square-foot apartment, with two kids.
Once we arrived in our new apartment, we were surprised to find that things flowed relatively smoothly. There was so much less to keep up with—fewer floors to mop, fewer windows to clean, fewer walls to wipe, etc. Now I think of our home as our little playhouse, since it's much smaller and everything is closer together. That also makes it so much easier for me to keep up with as a mom. I collect laundry all on one floor comparing with having to climb stairs to the house's second floor!
In our new home, we use lots of shoe organizers inside of every closet door for more than just shoes—baby items, office items, and medicines. We also have a functional room that serves as an office and gym. Since both my husband and I work from home, we require at least one room to share as an office with fitness equipment fitted into a corner.
While many people choose to downsize for financial reasons, that actually wasn't a factor in our decision. We wanted to be in a lively area with like-minded young families. That was our first priority. Though we may still buy another house in this area at some point down the line, for now, we're thrilled with the concept of renting an apartment. Let me put it this way: We’re not really the “handy” types, so being able to call maintenance(维修)for any repairs is worth every rent coin!

A.Transportation.
B.Neighbourhood.

23、It’s well-known that being in green spaces is good for physical and mental health. 【1】 A population-based study published in Scientific Reports looked at the effect of urban waterways on mental health and found that proximity (接近) to water increased positive feelings of wellbeing.
“If you’re in a body of water, your internal state just becomes calm,” Dr Natalie Azar, NBC News medical contributor, told TODAY. “【2】 However, we’ve never really been intentional about it.”
Being near water gives people a consciousness of something greater than themselves. The sounds and movement of water can get people to focus their attention and this invites calm. “You don’t have to go to the coast to experience this wellbeing,” said Azar. “Any waterway will do, including lakes, rivers, canals or ponds. 【3】”
A new study conducted by King’s College London has also proved that spending time near urban canals and rivers is linked to feeling happy and healthy, stressed a press release from the college. Moreover, it has found that urban waterways are superior to feelings of wellbeing than just being near the ocean.
“【4】 This means their capacity to improve mental wellbeing is likely to be due to the multiple benefits associated with both green and blue spaces,” said Andrea Mechelli, professor of early intervention in mental health at King’s College London.
The study has also found that there are continuous improvements to mental wellbeing for up to 24 hours after visiting urban waterways. 【5】 In England and Wales, people have access to 3,218 kilometers of rivers and canals that are readily accessible. In fact, 9 million people live within 1 km of a canal—something that is easily walkable.
A.These results remain to be tested.
B.Even a flowing fountain will work.
C.This is good news for urban people.
D.It’s something that I think we’ve all experienced.
E.Our findings show that blue spaces are naturally calming.
F.Canals and rivers contain not only water but also trees and other plants.
G.Now scientists have discovered blue spaces are also connected to better mental health.
24、There have been few precious positives during the COVID-19 pandemic but academies may have unearthed one: People look more attractive in protective masks.
Researchers at Cardiff University were surprised to find that both men and women were: judged to look better with a face covering hiding the lower half of their faces.
Dr Michael Lewis, a reader from Cardiff University’s school of psychology and an expert in faces, said research carried out before the pandemic had found that medical face masks reduced attractiveness because they were associated with disease or illness.
“We wanted to test whether the idea had changed since face coverings became common and understand whether the type of mask had any effect,” he said.
“Our study suggests faces are considered more attractive when covered by medical face masks. This may be because we’re used to healthcare workers wearing blue masks and now we associate these with people in caring or medical professions. At a time when we feel weak, we may find the wearing of medical masks makes us feel less worried or frightened and so we feel more positive towards the wearer.”
The first part of the research was carried out in February 2021. Forty-three women were asked to rate on a scale of one to ten the attractiveness of images of male faces without a mask, wearing a plain cloth mask, a blue medical face mask, and holding a plain black book covering the area a face mask would hide.
The participants said those wearing a cloth mask were significantly more attractive than the ones with no masks or whose faces were partly obscured (掩盖) by the book. But the medical face mask—which was just a normal, disposable kind—made the wearer look even better.
“The results run counter to the pre-pandemic research where it was thought that masks made people think about disease and that the person should be avoided.” said Lewis. “The pandemic has changed our psychology in how we view the wearers of masks. When we see someone wearing a mask we no longer think ‘that person has a disease, and I need to stay away’.”
【1】What was people’s attitude to wearing a mask before the pandemic?
A.Doubtful.
B.Favourable.
C.Confused.
D.Negative.
【2】What can wearing a mask offer us according to the new study?
A.A sense of pride.

【3】Which of the following makes us most attractive according to the research?
A.Leaving the face uncovered.
B.Wearing a plain cloth mask.
C.Wearing a blue medical mask.
D.Hiding the face partly with a book.
【4】What does the underlined phrase “run counter to” in the last paragraph probably mean?
