21、 In the search for clean, renewable energy to meet our ever-increasing needs, wind power might seem to be the perfect option. Since ancient times, wind power has been used to move ships, pump water and grind grain. Around the end of the 19th century, the invention of the wind turbine(涡轮机)made it possible to use wind to generate electricity. Now large-scale installations of wind turbines, called wind farms, create and develop clean electricity for people around the world. Yet despite the advantages that wind energy offers, challenges to using this renewable resource can be found.
The first advantage of wind power is that it truly is a renewable resource. No matter how much wind we use to generate electricity, we will never deplete the supply. This is its greatest advantage over non-renewable resources like coal or oil. However, wind does not provide a constant supply of energy. Even the windiest places on Earth have periods of calm. Without a strong wind, wind turbines are not able to produce electricity. That means that wind power isn’t feasible as a single source of electricity. It can only work with other sources that supply power.
Wind power is a clean source of energy, meaning it produces electricity without environmentally harmful missions. This is in contrast to conventional power plants that burn fuel to generate power, thereby producing pollution. But that isn’t to say that wind power doesn’t have an environment impact. The large spinning blades of a wind turbine can be fatal to birds and bats. The turbines also create noise pollution. The sound produced through normal operation can be annoying or disturbing to people that live near.
Fortunately, wind turbines are particularly well suited for areas far from homes and cities. The large towers that provide the base for the wind turbines also have a small footprint, which means that they don’t take up a lot of space. With all of the challenges of wind power, it obviously cannot be the sole solution for clean energy production. But the advantages of wind power generation shouldn’t be forgotten in the search for clean, renewable energy.

22、My fourth-grader came home from school crying recently, after discovering that she hadn’t been invited to a birthday party. I wanted to join in her pity party.
I, too, had just seen pictures of a gathering on social media. I was asleep by 9:00 that night, unaware of all the fun things that were happening.
I always assumed that FOMO (fear of missing out) was a feeling reserved for kids and teens. But FOMO affects every age group. In fact, there’s a scientific explanation for FOMO: Our survival as a species is based on being included in group activities. In order to survive, we must share resources and work as a team.
In a 2018 study published in Motivation and Emotion, researchers found that FOMO is felt by everyone, regardless of their personality. And while FOMO was originally based on survival, today it is associated with sleep problems, fatigue (疲劳) and stress.
“When glancing through social media, we see the best versions of people’s lives and we think we should be doing something to feel more fulfilled and satisfied, instead of focusing on activities that actually give us less joy,” said Meha Agrawal, founder and CEO of Silk & Sonder.
Cutting back on your social media time would help limit your FOMO feelings. But you can also decide to change your thinking. “You always get to choose your thoughts,” said Vikki Louise, an anxiety coach. “The concept of missing out is subjective: You always decide if you are not included.”
Additionally, connecting with the reasons you chose not to participate and owning your choice can go a long way, said Adi Jaffe, mental health expert and lecturer at UCLA. This is true even if you didn’t actually make the choice to be excluded.

23、What do you do when you have a problem? Do you go to an expert, ask your friends to come up with an idea? Or would you ask a crowd of strangers for a solution? It may sound strange, but it has spurred more than a few successful innovations. That’s the thinking behind a “challenge prize”.
Challenge prizes come in many shapes and sizes but the basic concept remains the same. Rather than consulting and paying an expert to innovate a solution, you offer the prize up to anyone who believes they can solve it and present the first to do so with a prize. Many would argue, “Who is better qualified than an expert?” But actually, not using one seems to result in a great deal of thinking outside of the box.
Some argue that formal education can kill creativity because it sometimes only teaches a single solution to a problem or single method to achieve a task. In the same way, some suggest that experts can suffer from tunnel vision. “If we launch an XPRIZE and it’s just the ‘experts’ that come out and compete, they’re usually the ones that will tell us it can’t be done.” says Marcus Shingles, former CEO of the XPRIZE Foundation.
There are other advantages too. “You’re not asking people to use a particular solution set on how to solve that problem. So you get this tremendous amount of diversity.” adds Shingles. What’s more, the crowd can also throw up issues that may have been overlooked.
However, there are dangers connected to blue-sky thinking. “You don’t want to be creating a challenge prize which pushes people to solve a problem where there is no demand,” says Tris Dyson, executive director of challenge prizes. And of course, there are those who invest their personal time and money only to see no return at all: someone else claims the prize, or they find that the reward does not match the resources they invested.

24、Just when you think life is going a certain way, there can be an unexpected twist of fate. James Fox found this out after meeting a total stranger.
Life is not easy for James Fox. His arms and legs are disabled because of an accident. Even worse he was homeless. Both his mom and dad had pas-sed away after the pair had first met. Even though Dan didn’t know much about James, he took him to his office and gave him a $10, 000 check. Since then, James has become like a member of Dan’s family and has even started up on his main passion, computer work, once more.
Dan even bought James a flat in South Point Villas. The home is completely accessible as the floors flow throughout, so James can use his skateboard to get about. Dan also created a GoFundMe for. James, called “Let’s Make 2020 James Fox’s Best Year Yet”. The target was set at $13, 000, but it has already surpassed $10, 000.
