二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、One of the astronomy's most well-known telescopes-the 305-metre-wide radio telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico-is closing forever. Engineers cannot find a safe way to repair it after two cables supporting the structure suddenly and catastrophically broke, one in August and one in early November.

The Arecibo telescope, which was built in 1963, was the world's largest radio telescope for decades and has historical and modern importance in astronomy. It was the site from which astronomers sent an interstellar radio message in 1974, in case any extraterrestrial might hear it, and where the first known extrasolar planet was discovered, in 1992. It has also done groundbreaking work in detecting near-Earth planets, observing the puzzling celestial blasts known as fast radio bursts, and studying many other phenomena.

The cables that broke helped support a 900-tonne platform of scientific instruments, which hangs above the main telescope dish. The first cable broke panels at the edge of the dish, but the second tore huge gashes in a central portion of it. If any more cables fail-which could happen at any time-the entire platform could crash into the dish below. The US National Science Foundation(NSF), which owns the Arecibo Observatory, is working on plans to safely lower the platform down in a controlled fashion.

NSF's officials insist that the cable failures came as a surprise. After the first, engineering teams spotted a handful of broken wires on the second cable, which was more crucial to holding up the structure, but they did not see it as a major problem because the weight it was carrying was well within its design capacity.

Some of the observatory's scientific projects may be able to be transferred to other facilities, said Ralph Gaume, the NSF's head of astronomy. And he expects scientists to suggest where to shift their research. Science does continue at other portions of the Arecibo Observatory, which includes more than the 305-metre-dish. They include two lidar facilities that shoot lasers into the atmosphere to study atmospheric phenomena.

【1】What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The history of building the telescope.

B.The key role of the telescope in astronomy.

C.The benefit of learning astronomical events.

D.The process of locating near-Earth planets.

【2】According to Paragraph 3, we know that________.

A.NSF's officials tried to repair the platform

B.the second cable failure destroyed the platform

C.the scientific instruments broke down due to the cables

D.the platform would not break down if no more cables should fail

【3】Why were NSF's officials careless about the broken wires on the second cable?

A.The cable was not very old.

    B.The wires were specially designed.

C.The weight the cable bore did not go beyond its limit.

D.The cable was not as important as the first one.

【4】What will happen to the ongoing scientific projects at the observatory?

A.All of them will be shut down.

B.Some of them will be moved to other facilities.

C.They will be distributed to different scientists.

D.Some of them will be put off.

  • 22、September 23 marks the start of a new season. 【1】 In Great Britain, the third season of the year usually has only one name: autumn. But if you travel across the Atlantic, you’ll find that people use both fall and autumn interchangeably when referring to this time of year, making it the only season in the English language with two widely accepted names. 【2】

According to Dictionary.com, fall isn’t a modern name that followed the more traditional autumn. The two terms are actually first recorded within a few hundred years, with the term fall being used even a bit earlier.

【3】 The word is of Germanic origin and meant “picking” or “collecting”, a nod to the act of gathering and preserving crops in the field before winter. In the 1500s, English speakers began referring to the season separating the hot and cold months as either the fall of the leaf or the spring of the leaf, or fall and spring for short. 【4】 By the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word “automne” and the Latin “autumnus”, had overtaken fall as the standard British term for the third season.

Around the same time England adopted autumn, the first-ever British American colonists (殖民者) were voyaging to North America. 【5】 While the former fell out of fashion overseas, it established itself in the local vocabulary by the time America won its independence. Today, using both words to describe the season before winter is still a unique American behavior.

A.With them they brought the words fall and autumn.

B.The Americans prefer using fall to using autumn.

C.However, what exactly you should call that season depends on where you are.

D.But for some reason, only spring had staying power in Britain.

E.It is time to gather apples, rice and other things for the farmers.

F.So what is it about the season that makes it so special?

G.Before either word appeared, the season between summer and winter was known as harvest.

  • 23、   Getting stuck with gifts we do not want is no small problem. In a survey across 14 countries in Europe, meanwhile, 1 in 7 said they were unhappy with what they received for Christmas, yet more than half simply kept the gifts.

Why can’t more gifts be passed along to people who appreciate them? People in a study published in the Journal of Consumer Behaviour, for instance, used such words as guilty, lazy, thoughtless and disrespectful in describing their feelings about regifting. Popular culture casts it as taboo (禁忌), as well.

However, our research with Francis J. Flynn, a professor of organizational behavior at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, suggests the shame associated with regifting is largely unwarranted. Indeed, our research consistently tells us that people overestimate the negative consequences.

We asked people to imagine themselves as a “giver,” who gives someone a gift card and later learned it had been regifted. The general attitude of the original givers was: “It’s your gift, do what you want with it.” Next, we asked givers to compare regifting a supposed wristwatch with throwing it in the trash. For the original givers, regifting the watch was a much less offensive act than trashing it.

Finally, we invited to our lab at Stanford people who had recently received presents, and divided the people into two groups. When we gave the first group an opportunity to regift that present, 9% did so. When we gave the second group the same opportunity, we added that it was “National Regifting Day”. It wasn't really National Regifting Day, but the group didn’t know that: 30% of them agreed to regift.

Everyone has received unwanted gifts in their lives, and generally we will receive more in the future. Our research offers a simple solution to that problem. This holiday season, consider regifting, and encourage receivers of your gifts to do the same if what you gave them isn't quite what they hoped for.

1Why does the author mention the study in Journal of Consumer Behaviour?

A.To highlight the importance of regifting.

B.To show people’s attitudes to regifting.

C.To challenge the rightness of regifting.

D.To express his concern for regifting.

2What is the meaning of the underlined word “unwarranted”?

    A.Unnecessary. B.Uncertain.

    C.Unimportant. D.Unconscious.

3What do we know about the research?

    A.9% simply kept unwanted gifts.

B.30% didn’t know National Regifting Day.

    C.Givers generally didn’t mind regifting.

D.Receivers tended to trash unwanted gifts.

4What can we conclude from the text?

A.Regifting is offensive. B.Regifting is forbidden.

C.Regifting is popular. D.Regifting is acceptable.

  • 24、   Sam Mehr, a psychologist at Harvard started working on the project after he kept reading an overfamiliar line at the top of research papers that said, “music is universal.” But every time he came across the statement, there wasn't a citation to back it up.

To see if there was any proof to this claim, he and his fellow researchers created two databases: one with descriptions from the researchers of what happened when music from the 1960s was playing, and another of 118 audio recordings from 86 different societies.

He found that there were three characteristics of behavior that consistently characterized music: formality, arousal (or how calming or exciting a song was), and religiosity—religious respect.

People did a decent job guessing the themes, especially for dance songs and nursery rhymes, says Manvir Singh, a Harvard Ph. D. student in the department of human evolutionary biology.

“Music appears in this huge diversity of behavioral, social, emotional context in human societies,” Singh says, “but it does so similarly across societies. ”

“The musical brain may have led to things that we take for granted in human nature, like compassion and empathy (同情与共情), because music uniquely can help us achieve those states,” Daniel Levitin, a cognitive scientist who's done similar research on music and evolution, explains, “Not to mention awe, appreciation, and gratitude.”

For Mehr and his team, the hunt for data is just the beginning. The lab is running more detailed quizzes to dig into how people respond to what they hear. They also hope to do studies on different populations like babies to see how they react to tunes like nursery rhymes from faraway societies.

Singh says he also hopes to analyze lyrics and the way they shape people's feelings and actions, even if it's in a language they don’t understand. ‘‘Exploring the lyrics allows us to better understand how music can bring these emotional or behavioral responses,” says Singh, “but also, in a broader way, the world view of the people who are singing.”

【1】What's the main idea of the text?

    A.Music shapes people's world views.

    B.Music is universal across societies.

C.Music behaviors are different in cultures.

D.The scientists have different opinions on music.

【2】Which music behavioral characteristic will appear when rock music is playing?

    A.Gratitude.

    B.Formality.

    C.Religiosity.

    D.Arousal.

【3】What does Daniel Levitin think of music?

A.It plays a role in emotion.

    B.It can't lead to appreciation.

C.It can help us achieve goals.

D.It is a talent we are born with.

【4】What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

    A.More quizzes will be conducted.

    B.Different populations will be studied.

C.The hunt for data has already been finished.

D.Further data wait to be sought.
