二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   An elephant, who accidentally fell into a dry, 25-foot deep well in Northeast India, lived to see another day thanks to the quick-thinking rescuers' scientific knowledge. The chain of events unfolded early in the morning on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, when citizens of Amliya toli village, in the state of Jharkhand, awoke to the cries of the trapped animal and called the forest department for help.

When the rescuers arrived, they instantly realized that pulling out the huge animal, which seemed to be about 30 years old, was not a practical idea. Fortunately , the forest department officials had been paying attention in their science class and were well aware of the Archimedes' principle. The physics law of buoyancy(浮力),which explains how ships stay afloat, states that when a body is partially or fully immersed in a liquid, it experiences an apparent loss in weight that is equal to the weight of the liquid displaced by the part of the body in the liquid.

In this case, that meant filling the well with enough water to displace the elephant's weight. It took the three motorized pumps over three hours to add the hundreds of gallons needed to enable the heavy animal to float up to the surface. However, it was well worth the effort. A heart-warming video shows the villagers cheering as the animal, using the makeshift ramp (斜坡)dug by the rescue team, pulls itself out of the well and walks away to safety in the nearby forest.

1Who first found the trapped elephant?

    A.Some scientists. B.Forest rescuers.

C.Nearby villagers. D.The forest department officials.

2How did the rescuers feel about pulling out the elephant?

    A.Impossible. B.Challenging. C.Secure. D.Realistic.

3What does the underlined word “immersed” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Broken. B.Covered. C.Stuck. D.Dampened.

4What can be the best title for the text?

A.An Elephant Trapped in the Water

B.Villagers Used Water to Save Animals

C.Forest Rescuers Invented a New Technique

D.An Elephant Saved by the Archimedes' Principle

  • 22、Have you ever lost something in a hard-to-reach space, like behind a couch or a cupboard? Wouldn’t it be nice to just be able to squeeze in and out? New innovations in the field of robotics will soon be able to make this mice idea into a reality.

In a study published on Jan 25 in the science journal Matter, engineers from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Carnegie Mellon University in the US have developed small robots that can quickly change back and forth from liquid to solid states.

According to the website Mashable. the scientists were inspired by sea cucumbers. They are able to change the stiffness (僵硬度) of their body or reduce the potential for physical damage. The robots in the study were made from gallium (镓), a soft meta with a low melting point of 30 C. The scientists then used changes in the magnetic field to control the magnetic particles inside the gallium material to provide heat. This heat then allowed the robots to change between solid and liquid states as well as to move around.

As the website Tech Xplore pointed out, other similar materials require external heat sources such as heat guns and electrical currents to induce a change of states; but now, the robots can use a heat source inside itself to change states independently. During the robots” experimental trials. the scientists conducted a number of tests. These tests included having the robots melt into liquid and re-form to escape a prison-like cage. It can remove a foreign object from and deliver medicinal drugs to a model stomach. The robot is also able to build and repair hard-to-reach circuits. The robots’ ability to switch between states of matter allows for a number of possible uses and advancements in different fields, such as the biomedical and circuit assembly (组装) industries.

Still, in the words of senior author Carmel Majidi at Carnegie Mellon University, for now these are all just “proofs of concept” which show the abilities of these new kind of robots.

【1】Why can the robots switch between solid and liquid?

A.Because they consist of a unique metal and magnetic particles.

B.Because they can reduce the potential for physical damage.

C.Because they are able to change the stiffness of their body.

D.Because they have external heat sources any time any where.

【2】What does the underlined word “induce” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.witness

    B.remove

    C.cause

    D.accept

【3】What will be the function of the robot?

A.To help scientists inspire sea cucumbers.

    B.To put a couch into a hard-to-reach space.

C.To get rid of foreign objects from an organ.

D.To assist people in escaping a prison-like cage.

【4】Where is the text probably taken from?

    A.A health report

    B.A science fiction.

    C.A Chemistry textbook.

    D.A scientific magazine.

  • 23、   Selah Thompson shares her love of reading and even creates her own stories.

Books have the power to transport you to another place and make you feel like you are part of the story. A love of reading should be developed at a young age so children can benefit a lot. That’s a gift 8-year-old Selah Thompson from Atlanta, Georgia, received from her parents and wants to pass on to other children.

When Selah was five, she came home from her first day at kindergarten and told her parents that a lot of her new friends at school didn’t know their ABCs, which really bothered Selah and she wanted to do something about it.

She then asked her parents to give away 20 hundred thousand books. Her parents began to do research and found that there is a huge amount of illiteracy (文盲) in America and that two-thirds of students who cannot read skillfully by the end of the fourth grade will end up in prison or on welfare.

After understanding the need for books and establishing a love for reading, Selah’s parents were on board. In 2018, they created the nonprofit Empowered Readers Literacy Project. This organization promotes families to create solid reading habits so children see books as something positive.

More than 2,400 kids and their parents participated in the reading activities in Atlanta in the first year. They also run an adventure time readers club and the 500 books project to get books into children’s hands.

Over the past two years, the literacy project has donated 8,000 books, including Selah’s own series. Although her goal of “20 hundred thousand books” is still quite far, Selah is on the right track. She is ambitious and a true role model for children and adults. Hopefully her love for books is contagious and children will be more willing to read when the main character actually looks like them.

【1】How did Selah feel when knowing some kids were illiterate?

    A.Surprised.

    B.Relieved.

    C.Concerned.

    D.Embarrassed.

【2】What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

A.Selah’s parents have the habit of researching literature.

B.Poor reading skills might cause one to fail in life.

C.Only a small number of parents teach kids at home.

D.Two-thirds of kids receive good school education.

【3】What does the underlined phrase “on board” in Paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Deeply moved.

    B.Ready to take action.

    C.In a group as a member.

D.Riding on or in a ship, train, airplane.

【4】What do the last two paragraphs mainly focus on?

A.What they have done to help local schools.

B.How kids have formed the habit of reading.

C.How Selah has turned her dream into reality.

D.The influence Selah and her parents have brought.

  • 24、   Rodney Smith is a man with a task. The Bermuda native is in the midst of a trip that will take him to every state in the nation, mowing lawns(修理草坪).

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a warm summer morning. I had just finished reading the grocery specials in the paper. I didn’t really need anything for the next few days. Nothing stuck out as a particularly good deal except the bonus chicken packs.

Five minutes later I headed to the store on my bike: helmet on my head, old pack on my back, and five bucks in my pocket. The temperature seemed to have gone up a little. I locked up my bike and went in. I headed straight back to the meat counter. I grabbed a package weighing slightly over ten pounds, and then headed for the checkout.

“Paper or plastic,” the clerk asked. She gave me a whole lot of change for so much meat and slipped the family pack into a sack, with most of it sticking out the top.

I headed outside, pleased with my purchase and with visions of fried chicken and chicken and rice in my head. Reality set in when the air hit my face. Not warm air, but really hot air. I realized I didn’t have the car, so the chicken would be riding on my back.

Actually, the partially frozen chicken felt cold against my back. In my head I began to count the number of stop signs left before I got home. The signal light turned yellow so I stopped.

For a moment at the signal, it was quiet. Then I heard a woman start screaming. The light turned green but the cars didn’t move. Maybe there had been an accident? I looked behind me even though I never heard any cars’ crunch.

What I saw was a small herd of people coming up the road towards me. There was a man in a suit, a woman with a beach towel, and a few others. I heard someone yell, ‘I’m a nurse. " I looked around again and still, no visible accident. Moving faster, this herd of folks started talking loudly in my direction.

“Were you in an accident” Are you alright?” Who are they talking to, I wondered?

I had no idea what was wrong. I was puzzled!

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

“Look, you are bleeding! Why don’t you get off your bike and take off your backpack?”
