二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   If you think of the jobs that robots could never do, you would probably put doctors and teachers atop of the list, it's easy to imagine robots and factory workers. But are we underestimating what robots can do?

In some cases, they already do better than doctors at diagnosing illness. Also, some patients might feel more comfortable sharing personal information with a machine than a person. Could there be a place for robots in education after all?

British education expert Anthony Seldom thinks so. He even has a date for the robot takeover of the classroom: 2027. He forecasts that robots will do the main job of disseminating knowledge and teachers will be like helpers. Intelligent robots will read students' faces, movements and even brain signals. Then they will pass the information on to each student in the way he or she can understand.

However, it's not a popular opinion. Most people think it's impossible that robots will have the ability to really connect with humans like another human can.

One thing is certain, though. A robot teacher is better than no teacher at all. In some parts of the world, there aren't enough teachers and 9%—16% of children under the age of 14 don't go to school. That problem could be partly solved by robots because they can teach anywhere.

Being a teacher is a difficult job and teachers often feel overworked. Perhaps the question is not “Will robots replace teachers?” but “How can't robots help teachers?” Teachers spend a lot of time doing non-teaching work, including more than 1 hour a week marking homework. If robots could cut the time teachers spend marking homework and writing reports, teachers would have more time and energy for the parts of the job humans do best.

【1】What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?

    A.Robots can do creative work.

    B.Robots work better than humans.

    C.Robots will replace doctors soon.

D.Robots can do more jobs than imagined.

【2】What does the underlined word “disseminating” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Storing.

    B.Spreading.

    C.Analyzing.

    D.Replacing.

【3】Which word best describes the public's attitude to Anthony Setdom's forecast?

    A.Reasonable.

    B.Uncreative.

    C.Unrealistic.

    D.Unacceptable.

【4】What's the main idea of the text?

A.Whether robots will completely replace human teachers.

B.Whether robots will evolve by themselves.

C.What robots are never able to do.

D.What the weakness of robots are.

  • 22、Just like happiness and sadness, anxiety is part of everyone's lived experience—but it's not always tolerated as such. “People often spend too much time and effort trying to rid anxiety,” says Dr Joel Minden, a clinical psychologist. “I encourage them to remember that anxiety is a normal emotional response.”

If you try to banish anxiety, all you're doing is putting it more at the forefront of your mind. But if you accept anxiety as part of life, you can learn to relate to it with self-pity or even with humour. This is a cornerstone of acceptance and commitment therapy(ACT), which has been gaining clinical validation, including by the American Psychological Association. ACT guides people to see their unpleasant emotions as just feelings and to accept that parts o£ life are hard. Sufferers are encouraged to begin a dialogue with anxious thoughts, examining their causes while also keeping in mind their personal goals and values.

This way of relating to anxiety has been a powerful strategy for John Bateman, the 52- year-old host of the podcast Our Anxiety Stories. When negative thoughts arise, he acknowledges them but doesn't let them drive his decisions. Over the years, Bateman has noticed that if he submits to his thoughts, they don't go away but dramatically increase. But if he recognizes them for what they are, just a passing thought and not a fact that needs to be acted on, they gradually go away.

Learning to live with anxiety is an individual process and one that requires trial and error to get just right. While acceptance is the first and most important step to take, some lifestyle changes have been proven to take the edge off, as well. Since tiredness, increased tension and stress leave us much easier to fall into anxiety, a well-balanced diet, sufficient rest and, especially, regular exercise can help us manage it better.

【1】What may Dr Joel Minden agree about anxiety?

A.It goes hand in hand with joy.

    B.It should be seriously taken.

    C.It is easily-earned experience.

    D.It is often improperly treated.

【2】What can explain the underlined word “banish” in Paragraph 2?

    A.Ignore.

    B.Hide.

    C.Recognize.

    D.Control.

【3】Why does the author mention John Bateman in Paragraph 3?

    A.To explain a strategy.

    B.To describe a phenomenon.

    C.To present a successful case.

    D.To introduce a public figure.

【4】What is advised to deal with anxiety in the last part?

    A.Concentrating on the process.

    B.Making lifestyle adjustments.

    C.Avoiding exposure to pressure.

D.Learning to get things in place.

  • 24、The United States is one of the world’s wealthiest countries. Despite this, many Americans are not even getting enough to eat. In fact, around 37 million Americans struggle just to put healthy food, or any food at all, on the table every day.

One might think that a food shortage is happening in America, but this is not the case. There is more than sufficient food for everyone. Unfortunately, 40% of food is wasted every day. There are many different ways food is wasted: farmers only pick the best-looking crops, deliveries aren’t made on time, supermarkets throw out extra products, customers buy more than they need, and so on. The highest level of wastage tends to happen in the richest communities.

Meanwhile, people who live in poor or rural areas often have little or no access to food. These areas are called “food deserts”. They have fewer supermarkets, and the only food options that they can afford are often unhealthy ones. Healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables may be impossible to find. Sadly, 12. 8% of the American population live in food deserts.

What can we do to help those who don’t have enough food? Shirley and Annie Zhu came up with a solution. In 2017, when Hurricane Harvey destroyed over 100,000 homes in their city, Houston, the sisters got involved. While helping to clear water from a flooded supermarket, they saw a hugeamount of food being wasted. At the same time, thousands of people in the city didn’t have enough to eat.

The girls were only 15 when they set up Fresh Hub with 10 of their classmates. They created an app which could be used by residents to find out whether fresh food was available. Then they contacted local farmers and supermarkets to ask for their extra food.

At first, they found that people didn't take them seriously because they were so young. They decided to work with Second Servings, a local organization that had been providing food to food deserts around the city. The owner of Second Servings, Barbara Bronstein, was impressed with the twins and introduced them to several food providers. To date, Fresh Hub has delivered more than 15,000 pounds of food to people in need.

【1】What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us?

    A.What causes food shortage.

B.How much food is wasted every day.

C.How food is wasted in America.

D.Where the highest level of wastage happens.

【2】When did the sisters realize the problem of food waste?

A.When they were assisting in flood relief.

B.After they had made a survey about it.

C.When they were visiting a food desert.

D.After they had read reports about it.

【3】What can we say about “food deserts”?

A.Crops can’t grow in food deserts.

B.People in food deserts have no access to fresh water.

C.Only fruits and vegetables are available in food deserts.

D.About one in ten Americans live in food deserts.

【4】What can be inferred about Fresh Hub from the last two paragraphs?

A.Its founders are mostly college students.

B.It has gained support from Second Servings.

C.It has created a most popular food app.

D.It is welcomed by local farmers and supermarkets.
