二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A simple project to help a family in need stopped Luck Mickelson in his tracks. In 2012, he and his family were inspired to build and donate a bunk bed, one bed on top of the other, after learning there were local children who slept on the floor. Shocked to discover how widespread this need was in his community, Mickelson founded Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit that builds and delivers beds to children in need.

Born and raised in Idaho, Mickelson, now 41, had a thriving career. He coached his kids' sports teams and fished in the nearby river. But when he met children who were sleeping on the floor, his peaceful life changed course.

Using safety guidelines and his daughter’s bunk bed as a model, Mickelson started buying wood and supplies to build beds with his own money. He recruited friends and family members to help around the holidays. As the word spread, interest and involvement from his and other communities flooded-along with Mickelson's bunk bed output. "That first project, we built 11 bunk beds in my garage, "he said. "The next year, we did 15. Then it doubled every year. In 2017, we built 612 bunk beds.”

With the motto "No kid sleeps on the floor in our town”, the nonprofit and its more than 65 branches have built and delivered more than 1,500 free beds to children across America. But along with the rapid growth, Mickelson was faced with a tough choice: advancing his career or his nonprofit. He chose the latter and went from making "great money to zero money". He's never looked back. "I found that the need I have isn't financial, "he said. “The need I have is seeing the joy on kids’ faces, knowing that I can make a difference.”

【1】Why did Mickelson set up Sleep in Heavenly Peace?

    A.To get more donations.

    B.To make a big fortune.

    C.To inspire his community.

D.To donate beds to kids in need.

【2】What do we know about Luke Mickelson?

A.He originally had a very good career.

B.He changed his career from time to time.

C.He used to sleep on the floor when he was a kid.

D.He had his own fish farm.

【3】How did other people react to Mickelson’s project?

A.They showed little interest in it.

B.They were supportive and involved in it.

C.They were doubtful about the safety of the bunk bed.

D.They volunteered to buy beds with their own money.

【4】What is Mickelson's attitude to the nonprofit?

    A.Ambiguous

    B.Defensive.

    C.Positive

    D.Cautious

  • 23、   During the winter in the Southern Hemisphere, a blue point of light shines overhead. The brilliant point on the sky, which looks like a bright star, is actually two stars in close orbit — accompanied by the closest known black hole to Earth.

The newly discovered black hole is about 1,011 light-years from our solar system in the star system HR 6819. Published today in Astronomy & Astrophysics, the object is locked in an orbit with two visible stars. It is estimated about four times the mass of the sun and about 2,500 light-years closer than the next black hole. “It seems like it’s been hiding in plain sight,” says astronomer Kareem El-Badry, a Ph.D. student at the University of California, Berkeley, who specializes in binary star (双子星) systems but wasn’t involved with the study. “HR 6819 is such a bright star (system) that people have been studying it since the 80s, but it seems like it’s had some surprises.”

“If you find one that is very close to you, and you assume you’re not special, then they must be out there everywhere,” says lead study author Thomas Rivinius, an astronomer at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile. Researchers have long estimated that the Milky Way is home to hundreds of millions of black holes, objects whose gravitational fields (引力场) are so strong, not even light can escape. But finding these dark objects has proven extremely difficult. Dozens of black holes in the galaxy have been spotted “feeding” on nearby clouds of gas — a process that sends out x-rays as the material moves around the edges of the black hole. But the majority of black holes in our galaxy cannot be seen, so the only way to find them is by observing their gravitational effects on surrounding objects.

In follow-up work, researchers led by study co-author Petr Hadrava aim to study the light given off by HR 6819 and understand the precise identity of the two close stars.

1What do we know about the newly discovered black hole?

A.It moves with two other stars.

B.It came into being in the 1980s.

C.It weighs much more than earth.

D.It can be seen easily during the winter.

2What can we infer from Thomas Rivinius’s words in paragraph 3?

    A.Most black holes are common.

B.More black holes can be found.

C.Black holes are difficult to learn.

D.Black holes exist in star systems.

3What will scientists probably do next?

A.Learn more about the two close stars.

B.Analyze the light around the black hole.

C.Observe the influence of black holes on stars.

D.Study the black holes in the system of HR 6819.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.A New Star System in Universe

B.Two Special Stars in the Same Orbit

C.The Closest Black Hole to the Earth

D.The Biggest Black Hole in the Milky Way

  • 24、   Bob Geldof was the lead singer and songwriter of an Irish music band named The Boomtown Rats. It was 23 October 1984, and they were not doing very well; they had not had a hit song for a while. Bob was worrying about this when he switched on the BBC news. It was a report on a famine(饥荒) in Ethiopia. Images of hungry children and crying mothers filled the screen. The reporter described the crisis as “the closest thing to hell on earth".

“There I saw something that placed my worries in ghastly new perspective,” Geldof later said in an interview. Deeply upset and saddened by the report, Geldof decided to do something about it using the language of pop music. In just over four weeks after seeing the news report, Geldof had written, with the help of his friend, another band leader Midge Ure, a song that would be a huge bestseller. In addition, he managed to convince about 40 of the most famous performers at that time in Britain and Irish pop music to come to a London xkw music studio to record the song. Bob named this super group Band Aid.

The song was "Do They Know It's Christmas?” By the last day of 1984,3 million copies had 2 been sold in Britain. It went on to sell nearly 12 million worldwide. Some people bought extra copies, and gave them away or donated them back to resell.

Geldof's next step was to organize charity super-concerts called Live Aid in London and Philadelphia, and streamed them live on television, raising an additional US$48 million. He was made a knight by Queen Elizabeth II, recognizing him for his activism and anti-poverty work for Africa.

【1】How did Bob Geldof learn about the starving children in Ethiopia?

A.From another band leader Midge Ure.

B.By listening to the BBC news on the radio.

C.Through a news report about a famine on TV.

D.During a music tour with his band in Ethiopia.

【2】Why did some people buy extra copies of the song?

A.To have more songs to enjoy.

B.To support Bob Geldof's music career.

C.To help the starving children in Ethiopia.

D.To show their deep affection for Band Aid.

【3】Which of the following best describes Bob Geldof?

    A.Sympathetic.

    B.Determined.

    C.Humorous.

    D.Sensitive.
