二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Technology is changing the way we get our news. Many people get a lot of their news on electronic devices instead of traditional media. They turn to social media for information. Recently, China's news agency Xinhua launched computer-created news readers, the world's first artificial intelligence, or Al news presenters.

I he news readers - created by machine learning technology - are based on two real-life Chinese newsmen. One is able to present newscasts in English; the other, in Mandarin Chinese. Machine teaming was used to examine video images and sounds of the two newsmen. The system then created the Al robotic presenters, which look and sound like real people.

The AI presenters will be a great improvement to the news team because they can work 24 hours a day on its website and on social media. One of the presenters even promised to work tirelessly to keep people informed The Al newsmen were able to read the news as naturally as a human presenter

Some machine learning experts said the system showed off China's latest progress in voice recognition, text-to-speech technology and data analysis. But several experts suggested that the term Al does not correctly describe abilities of the robotic news readers. On social media, many Chinese noted that the Al presenters did not seem real. People criticized them for not being more lifelike. On Weibo, several users wrote that the news readers have no soul.

Some people argued that only low-level jobs requiring heavy labor will he easily replaced by robots. Others praised the technology as a way for companies to make money from low-cost labor machines,

A writer for the MIT Technology Review declared Xinhua's news reader announcement as fake news. China's news presenter isn't intelligent at all. the report said. MIT Technology Review said the presenter itself is little more than a digital puppet that reads. It added. “The 'AI' in this case is the software that learns what makes a convincing-looking face and voice." While the demonstration was clearly evidence of improved technology it was a very narrow example of machine learning, the report said. Some businesses have experimented with similar technology for possible use in news operations.

【1】What advantage does the Al presenter have over real newsmen?

A.The AI presenter reads news more fluently.

B.The AI presenters can work around the clock.

C.I he AI presenters can speak multi languages.

D.The AI presenter has an unusual voice.

【2】Why do some netizens dislike the robotic news readers?

    A.Because their pronunciation sounds confusing.

    B.Because they perform without passion.

    C.Because they convey wrong messages,

    D.Because their accents arc funny.

【3】What might be talked about in the following paragraph?

A.The examples of businesses with similar technology.

B.The introduction of specific operating methods4

    C.The benefits of improved technology.

D.The ways of Al news broadcasting.

【4】What could be the best title of the passage?

A.Al newsmen are changing the world.

B.Robots will take the place of human.

C.Win the robot control the labor market?

D.Will robot readers take over the future of news?

  • 22、It was December 25, 1914, only 5 months into World War I. German, British, and French soldiers, already sick and tired of the senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and started socializing with “the enemy” along two-thirds of the Western Front.

German troops held up Christmas trees with signs, “Merry Christmas”. Thousands of troops ran across the battlefields covered with dead bodies. They sang Christmas songs, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared food and even played football. Soldiers hugged men they had been trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if their officers forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high.

Fear ran through the military leaders on both sides. They felt that their power was being challenged: soldiers declaring their brotherhood with each other and refusing to fight. Generals declared this unexpected peacemaking illegal and said that participating soldiers would face a military court. Those found guilty would be imprisoned or even shot.  By March 1915 the socializing movement had been destroyed and the killing machine was back in full operation. Over the next three years more than fifteen million people died in the war.

Not many people have heard the story of the Christmas Truce (休战). On Christmas Day, 1988, a local radio host in Boston played “Christmas in the Trenches”, a song about the Christmas Truce, several times and was stunned by his listeners’ response. Thousands of people called in, praising the song, with many moved to tears by the amazing events it described.

You can probably guess why the callers were in tears. The Christmas Truce story goes against most of what we have been taught about people. It lets us see the world as it can be and says, “This really happened once.” It shows us the potential we have as humans, and contradicts all of those TV and newspaper stories that tell us how mean and heartless people are. It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true: the world really can be different.

【1】The soldiers began socializing with the enemy because ________.

    A. they couldn't bear the meaningless killing

    B. it was the best way to avoid being killed

    C. they feared that they would be caught

    D. their enemies were from similar backgrounds

【2】How did the generals finally put an end to the soldiers’ socializing?

    A. They sent the soldiers’ loved ones to prison.

    B. They moved the two groups of soldiers further apart.

    C. They increased the number of officers to control the soldiers.

    D. They warned the soldiers that they would face severe punishment.

【3】The underlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 4 most probably means ________.

    A. satisfied B. shocked C. amused D. confused

【4】The author uses the story of the soldiers to imply that human beings ________.

    A. are not trustworthy under stress

    B. are naturally aggressive and war-like

    C. are basically caring and kindhearted

    D. will always do what is in their own self-interest

  • 23、Recently, I had lunch with a young Chinese student who studies at a college in New York. He is very bright and ambitious and I enjoyed our conversation. Still, I felt upset and useless afterwards because I was not able to provide him with any good news. Graduating at the end of this year, he asked me how he could find a job in this country and fulfill his career dreams.

In recent years, students who found a job here after graduation have had to go through a cruel lottery system to obtain their H-1B working visa. And the success rates have been declining year after year because of the ever growing number of applicants. Last year, there were 233,000 applicants and only 30 percent of them were lucky, about half of the rate in 2013.

And it can only become worse. US former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies in this country have been tightening up and this trend will continue for at least the next few years. In this case, foreign students studying social sciences, a field in which starting salaries are rarely above the required amount, can kiss their visa hopes goodbye.

Compared to the older generation of Chinese students, today’s young people no longer consider the US as the only option. Many start to think China offers better opportunities in the longer term.

This is not to say that Chinese students in the US are not interested in job opportunities here any more. A few years of work experience in the US can give them advantages when they finally land back in their home country. But if the job opportunities are largely reduced by the tightening of immigration policy, I expect there will be a decline. And if that happens, it is the American economy that will suffer from the loss of those educated, hard-working and talented immigrants.

【1】The author felt useless because ___.

A.he couldn’t find a job in the fierce job market.

B.he was less bright and ambitious than the Chinese young student.

C.he couldn’t win the cruel lottery.

D.he had to make the Chinese student realize it was difficult to find work there.

【2】Which is not the reason why foreign students have difficulty finding jobs in the US?

A.It is increasingly hard for them to get their H-1B working visa.

B.The number of applicants in the job market is ever growing.

C.Donald Trump’s immigration policies have been tightening up.

D.The starting salaries they require are higher than expected.

【3】Supposing there were 250, 000 applicants in 2013, how many of them got their H-1B working visa?

    A.125, 000.

    B.75, 000.

    C.150. 000.

    D.200, 000.

【4】What’s the writer’s attitude towards the tightening of immigration policy in the US?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Concerned.

    C.Favorable.

    D.Objective.

  • 24、Soil creates life from death. The production of more than 95% of the food we eat relies on soil. But this precious resource is eroding (侵蚀) at a global average of 13.5 tons per hectare per year. Instead of nourishing crops, fertile topsoil is washed and blown away, ending up in inconvenient places such as ditches and oceans.

Jo Handelsman and Kayla Cohen try to make readers care about soil in A World Without Soil. Their prologue (前言) takes the form of a letter to the government. With the letter, they hope to make soil management a federal priority. The following chapters cover the basic science of soil as well as the causes and consequences of its erosion. In the last part of the book, the authors turn to possible solutions—many of them simple, and some centuries old. They describe about traditional soil management techniques, including planting diverse crops in rotation (轮种), increasing organic content, ploughing as little as possible, etc. With these techniques, farmers are able to produce rich agricultural production while maintaining deep banks of fertile soil.

Why, then, is fertile soil being allowed to be washed and blown away? The answer, not surprisingly, rests in global capitalism. Farmers' profit is thin, forcing farmers to plant the highest-profit crop from field to field every season. To ensure food security, Handelsman and Cohen urge the world to demand a real top-down change in how agricultural production is managed. "The burden of protecting soil cannot be shifted to farmers and environmental activists," they note. Governments must begin to move towards a model in which farmers are less independent business people growing and selling food, and more government-supported land workers managing both food production and soil protection. This should be the core of agriculture.

Our land and soil are too precious to be destroyed by the market price of crops. We must invest deeply and thoughtfully in our farmers so that they can invest deeply and thoughtfully in the land. This is the future of farming.

【1】What is paragraph 1 mainly about?

A.The gradual process of losing soil.

B.The worrying situation of soil erosion.

C.The alarming decrease of food output.

D.The great significance of soil protection.

【2】What do we know about the book A World Without Soil?

A.It targets federal officials as its main readers.

B.It puts forward some practical solutions to soil loss.

C.It advocates changing traditional farming techniques.

D.It blames governments for not taking care of farmlands.

【3】What do Handelsman and Cohen suggest farmers do?

A.Invest in the most profitable crops.

B.Grow and sell food all by themselves.

C.Shoulder the burden of protecting soil.

D.Work the land with government support.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.A Call to Save Soil

    B.Tips to Reshape Agriculture

    C.Ways to Enrich Farmland

D.An Appeal to Guarantee Food Supply
