21、A Scottish artist has been owed increasing the fortunes of the global pencil industry to after the surprise success of her “coloring-in” books for grown-ups.
Johanna Basford’s books of wonderful fill-in drawings have met a huge demand from those seeking to switch off from iPads, laptops and computer games. Now, having already topped the Amazon best-seller lists, her works are also giving a great increase in global sales for high-quality pencils, as coloring-in fans compete to make masterpieces of their own.
Far from being free of the digital age, pencil manufacturers are now struggling to cope with demand, with Faber Castell, the world ‘ s largest wood pencil manufacturer, revealing that it was now having to run extra shifts (轮班) at its factories.
“ People like coloring-in because they are fed up with digital, ” Ms Basford told “ The Sunday Telegraph”. “There is something nice about picking up a pencil and a pen. You are not going to get interrupted by Twitter, and there are also childhood memories in it. The last time you did a bit of coloring in, you probably weren’t about thinking about things that trouble you.” Rather like other recent middle-class crazes like home-baking, coloring-in appeals to nostalgia (怀旧感).
However, while it might be healthier than rushing in a home-made cake competition inspired by the Great British Bake Off, there is still a guilty pleasure to it, for not everyone approves of university-educated adults dedicating their spare hours to a “coloring-in” book that, in the view of critics anyway, ranks somewhere below puzzler books.
Leading the chorus of disapproval is comedian Russell Brand, who produced a recent sketch(素描) entitled “Adult Coloring Books: Is This the Apocalypse (大灾难)?” “What has turned us into terrified kids that want to live in childish stupors (恍惚)?” He got angry, accusing coloring-in fans of being scared of the modern world.
And what did Ms Basford say about criticizers like Mr Brand? “It’s a case of whatever makes you happy. There’s no right or wrong about it,” she said. “Who knows, maybe he just hasn’t found the right coloring-in book yet.”
“Coloring-in” clubs have formed worldwide, meeting in cafes and online to compare their works, and keeping the lead in the pencil of the industry.

23、If you start a sentence with, “If I were you...” or find yourself scratching your head over a decision when the answer is crystal-clear, there’s a scientific reason behind it. Our own decision-making abilities can become exhausted over the course of the day causing indecision or poor choices, but choosing on behalf of someone else is an enjoyable task that doesn’t suffer the same difficulties.
“The problem is decision fatigue, a psychological phenomenon that causes harm to the quality of your choices after a long day of decision making,” says Evan Polman, a leading psychologist.
Physicians on the job for several hours, for example, are more likely to prescribe antibiotics (抗生素) to patients when it’s unwise to do so. “Presumably it’s because it’s simple and easy to write a prescription and consider a patient case closed rather than investigate further,” Polman says.
But decision fatigue goes away when you are making the decision for someone else. When people imagine themselves as advisers, they feel less tired and rely less on decision shortcuts. “By taking upon the role of adviser rather than decision maker, one does not suffer the consequences of decision fatigue,” he says. “It is as if there is something fun about making someone else’s choice.”
“Getting input from others not only offers a fresh perspective and thought process, it often also includes riskier choices. While this sounds undesirable, it can be quite good. When people experience decision fatigue, when they are tired of making choices, they have a tendency to choose to go with status quo,” says Polman. “But it can be problematic since a change in the course of action can be important and lead to a positive outcome.”
To achieve a successful outcome or reward, some level of risk is almost always essential. “People who are susceptible to decision fatigue will likely choose to do nothing over something,” he says. “That’s not to say risk is always good, but it is related to taking action, whereas decision fatigue assuredly leads to inaction and the possible chagrin (懊恼) of a decision maker who might otherwise prefer a new course but is unfortunately hindered.”
“Just because you can make good choices for others doesn’t mean you’ll do the same for yourself,” Polman cautions. “Research has found that women negotiate higher salaries for others than they do for themselves,” he says, adding that people slip in and out of decision roles.
【1】What does the author say about people making decisions?
A.They tend to make decisions the way they think advantageous to them.
B.They may become exhausted making too many decisions for themselves.
C.They show considerable differences in their decision-making abilities.
D.They are more cautious in making decisions for others than for themselves.
【2】When do people feel less decision fatigue?
A.When they take decision shortcuts.
B.When they have advisers to turn to.
C.When they have major decisions to make.
D.When they help others to make decisions.
【3】What are people likely to do when decision fatigue sets in?
A.They avoid trying anything new.
B.They turn to physicians for advice.
C.They tend to make risky decisions.
D.They adopt a totally new perspective.
【4】What does the passage say about taking some risk in decision making?
A.It will enable people to be more creative.
B.It will more often than not end in regret.
C.It is vital for one to reach the goal desired.
D.It is likely to bring about serious consequences.
24、 Research shows that poor sleep has immediate negative effects on your hormones, exercise performance, and brain function. Here are 5 evidence-based tips to sleep better at night.
1. Increase bright light exposure during the day.
Your body has a natural time—keeping clock known as your circadian rhythm. Natural sunlight or bright light during the day helps keep your circadian rhythm healthy. 【1】 It also reduces the time it takes to fall asleep by 83%.
2.【2】
Exposure to light during the day is beneficial but nighttime light exposure has the opposite effect. Again, this is due to its effect on your circadian rhythm, tricking your brain into thinking it’s still daytime. This reduces hormones like melatonin, which help you relax and get deep sleep. Blue light—which electronic devices like smartphones and computers emit in large amounts—is the worst in this regard.
3. Don’t consume caffeine late in the day.
Caffeine has numerous benefits and is consumed by 90% of the US population. 【3】 However, consuming caffeine up to 6 hours before bed significantly worsens sleep quality.
4. Try to sleep and wake at consistent times.
Your body’s circadian rhythm functions in agreement with sunrise and sunset. Being consistent with your sleep and waking times can aid long-term sleep quality. If you struggle with sleep, try to get in the habit of waking up and going to bed at similar times. 【4】
5. Optimize(优化)your bedroom environment.
Many people believe that the bedroom environment and its setup are key factors in getting a good night’s sleep. These factors include temperature, noise, external lights, and furniture arrangement. To optimize your bedroom environment, try to minimize external noise, light, and artificial lights from devices like alarm clocks. 【5】
A.Set your bedroom temperature.
B.Reduce blue light exposure in the evening.
C.Avoid irregular or long naps during daytime.
D.After several weeks, you may not even need an alarm.
E.A single dose can enhance focus, energy, and sports performance.
F.Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, relaxing clean, and enjoyable place.
G.This improves daytime energy, as well as nighttime sleep quality and duration.
