21、For years, David James, who studies insects at Washington State University, had wanted to examine the migration (迁徙)patterns of West Coast monarch butterflies (黑脉金斑蝶). The route the butterflies travel has been hardly known because the populations are too small to follow. For every 200 monarchs tagged (打标签)by a researcher, only one is usually recovered at the end of its trip, James says, and finding even 200 in the wild to tag is unlikely. Knowing the route is vital to conservation efforts, but James had no way to figure it out- until he got a phone call from Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.
The prison was looking for new activities to improve the mental health of those serving long-term sentences. So James began working with prisoners to raise monarchs through the whole process of their transformation. The adult insects were then tagged and released from the prison. Over five years, nearly 10, 000 monarchs flew from the facility. Elsewhere in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, researchers released another few thousand.
The tags included email addresses, and soon after the first butterflies took off, James started receiving messages from people who had spotted them. The butterflies, the reports confirmed, wintered in coastal California. Twelve of them landed at Lighthouse Field State Beach in Santa Cruz. Several more headed to Bolinas and Morro Bay.
The work helps researchers identify ideal places to plant milkweed and other vegetation that are important to the life cycle of West Coast monarch butterflies. It also brought out the gentler side of some of the prisoners. “They were very worried that they were going to harm the butterflies, ”James says. Watching the monarch change their form also touched the men. “This butterfly changed, ” James recalls prisoners telling him, “and maybe we can too. ”

22、Adults are happy to tell their children that crusts (面包皮) will give them curly hair, carrots will help them see in the dark, and spinach will make them strong. Even though adults know it's not totally true, they think it's good for their children's health, a study had found.
In a study about 31 per cent of adults said they once told their children the curly hair tale, and 36 per cent said they'd been told the same thing by their mother or father. Among the over-50s, almost half said they'd been promised curly hair if they ate their crusts. A quarter of the 2,000 adults questioned in the study told their children carrots would help them see in the dark. This could be true to some extent because of the high levels of vitamin A and beta-carotene in root vegetables.
Another favorite among parents is that milk will make one strong. A third surveyed said their parents told them this, and about 29 per cent said they told their children the same thing. But while there is plenty of evidence to suggest milk is good for people's health, there are also a lot of scientific papers saying it isn't.
Thanks to Popeye, spinach is also fed to children, along with the idea that it will make them strong. While there is also some truth in this one, scientists now believe it is not the iron, but the inorganic nitrates (无机硝酸盐) that improve physical power.
One in seven of the surveyed admitted telling their little ones that runner beans will make them run faster, which is nothing more than wordplay and has no basis in science. Almost one in five adults were subjected to the same tale in childhood.
Just over one in 10 parents told their children green food would turn them into a superhero, and a quarter admitted hiding vegetables in meals.
Lyndsay Jones, spokesman for Persil Washing Up Liquid, said, "It's clear that the most persuasive stories about food are passed on from generation to generation. Our research shows that the ideas continue, and we tell our kids the same things our parents told us, even if they're not always entirely true."
Crusts may not make your hair curly, but there's plenty of research that says crusts contain more of the goodness than the rest of a loaf. Hopefully, as a result of our Cook with Kids promise, more parents will be encouraged to spend time with their children in the kitchen and teach them the truth about food.
【1】We can know from Paragraph 3 that ________.
A. a third people are forced to drink milk by their parents
B. milk is beneficial to children's physical strength
C. there is doubt whether milk is helpful to people's health
D. about 29 percent people wish their children good health
【2】Which of the following does Lyndsay Jones agree?
A. Adults are willing to teach their children as their parents did.
B. Most persuasive stories about food are false.
C. Stories about food shouldn't be passed on from generation to generation.
D. Parents can't make sure if some stories about food are totally true.
【3】We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. scientists think the iron in spinach helps children grow strong
B. parents are expected to tell children the truth about food
C. runner beans can really make children run fast
D. crusts are said to contain less nutrition than a loaf
【4】How is the passage mainly developed?
A. By following time order B. By making comparisons.
C. By giving examples D. By analyzing causes.
23、China’s first domestically-developed passenger jet, C919, was delivered to China Eastern Airlines in Shanghai in late 2022. The plane, developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), was issued a certificate of airworthiness by the country’s aviation (航空) regulator, the Civil Aviation Administration of China.
Its certification signifies that China has the ability to independently develop world-class large passenger aircraft, and marks an important milestone for the country’s large aircraft industry. American aerospace manufacturer (制造商) Boeing and France-based Airbus have long dominated the commercial aircraft market. The C919, as part of China’s goal to develop homemade civil planes, is trying to compete with medium-range passenger planes from the two global giants.
The C919 narrow-body jet is China’s first trunk jetliner developed in accordance with international standards of airworthiness and with independent intellectual property rights. It has a wingspan of nearly 36 meters, a length of about 39 meters and a tail height of around 12 meters. The single-aisle plane has 158 to 192 seats. About 60 percent of the planes in the global civil plane industry, and 80 percent of the planes on the Chinese market, belong to this category in terms of the number of seats. Its aerodynamically-designed wings made from advanced metals and composites help improve fuel efficiency while reducing noise in the cabin. Its cockpit (驾驶舱), with the latest navigation technology and the so-called “fly by wire” computer controls, makes the C919 competitive with other narrow-body jets.
Narrow-body aircraft with 150 to 200 seats have been the most widely used planes in the global civil aviation market, and the C919 was designed and developed to meet the huge market demand for this type of planes. COMAC said the company is also preparing for gaining an airworthiness certificate from the European Aviation Safety Agency, aiming for the global market. And if the C919 could prove it’s safe, reliable and fuel-efficient in commercial operations, and has a competitive price, it will of course be welcomed by the global market.
【1】What does the C919’s certification mean?
A.Chinese aircraft manufacturing ha superior to American.

D.An experiment report.
24、Whether it’s a cup of coffee, a cup of hot tea, or a bottle of soda, consuming caffeine (咖啡因) is a good choice for millions who want to wake up or stay up. Now, researchers at Johns Hopkins University have found its another use: improving our memory.
“We’ve always known that caffeine has effects on raising cognitive (认知的) abilities, but its particular effect on strengthening memory has never been proved,” said Michael Yassa, one of the scientists of the research team.
The researchers conducted a double-blind trial in which participants who did not regularly eat or drink products consisting of caffeine received either a placebo (安慰剂) or a caffeine pill five minutes after studying a series of pictures. The next day, both groups were tested on their ability to recognize pictures from the previous day’s study session. On the test, some of the pictures were the same as those from the day before, and some were new additions which were similar but not the same.
More members of the caffeine group were able to correctly identify the new pictures as “similar” to previously viewed pictures rather than mistakenly see them as the same. The brain’s ability to recognize the difference between two similar but not the same items reflected better memory, the researchers said.
“If we used a standard recognition memory task without these similar items, we would have found no effect of caffeine,” Yassa said. “However, using these items requires the brain to make a more difficult discrimination — what we call pattern separation, which seems to be the process that is improved by caffeine in our case.”
“Almost all the previous studies distributed caffeine before the study session, so if there is an improvement, it’s not clear whether it’s due to caffeine’s effects on attention, focus, or other factors,” Yassa said. “By offering caffeine after the study session, we rule out all of these effects and make sure that if there is an improvement, it's due to memory and nothing else.”
