  • 21、Sometime back, after a six-year-old lioness named Magigi repeatedly killed cattle, Botswana authorities caught and moved her into Central Kalahari Game Reserve, far from people. Magigi spent most of her time within the reserved protective boundaries, but after a year she escaped outside and was shot dead by a farmer. New research Maude and his colleagues have conducted confirms that Magigi's unfortunate story is common for many relocated lions. For decades, wildlife managers in a number of African countries have used such a kind way to deal with lions that repeatedly kill livestock (牲畜).But the new research shows that after lions are moved, most continue to kill livestock and endanger villagers' living.

Across Africa, lion numbers have fallen by 43 percent in the past two decades, to as few as 23,000 animals today. About 3,000 remain in Botswana. The sharp declines are primarily driven by development-lions now occupy just 8 percent of their historic habitat. With less space set aside for conservation, lions are more frequently coming into contact with humans. These are usually farms, expanding around the edges of the protected areas. The lions eat livestock, which negatively impacts the livelihood of the farmers in these rural areas. Without a proper way to prevent these attacks, the dinners often turn to deadly force, shooting or poisoning the lions, which has resulted in the decrease in lion population.

Rather than trying to move lions, wildlife conservationist Glyn Maude says, emphasis should be placed on reducing the chances of lions encountering and killing livestock in the first place. Many preventative measures are being tested in various African countries, including hiring lion guardians (护卫者) to monitor these big cats, creating lion-proof fences, sending out lion text alerts, and teaching herders to keep livestock away from high-risk areas.

【1】Why was Magigi moved to a reserve?

A.To stop her from being caught.

B.To prevent her from killing cattle.

C.To get her to stay with her family.

D.To train her to get along with people.

【2】What is the major reason for the decline in the lion population in Africa?

    A.Illegal wildlife trade.

    B.Human-lion conflict.

    C.A natural disaster.

D.The lack of food in their habitat.

【3】What can we infer from Maude's words in the last paragraph?

A.Lions will be fenced in to avoid meeting people.

B.The relocation of lions has proven to be effective.

C.Prevention is the cure for lions' attacking livestock.

D.It's impossible for lions to live with humans in harmony.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Big Cats' Relocation Proving Deadly

B.Lions Shot Dead after Attacking a Man

C.The Tragic Story of a Magical Lioness

D.Conservation Status of the African Lion

  • 22、   It should be one of the main goals in today's society to reduce plastic consumption. Though many believe recycling will solve the problem, and continue using plastic, it's actually the opposite. In 2013, 254 million tonnes of trash was produced in the U.S. alone, and only around 30% was recycled. This means the rest ended up in a landfill and will stay there for up to 1000 years.

Now Asian countries, including Vietnam and Thailand, are looking for new ideas to avoid plastic. One of those ideas was a new, eco-friendly way to pack their goods by avoiding plastic packaging. One of Perfect Homes Chiangmai's team members noticed a creative way to reduce plastic that a supermarket called Rimping Supermarket was using. Little did he know that people all around the world would absolutely love this idea. “I just popped in to get a few items while we were waiting to sign some contracts with our lawyer, who was delayed. When I noticed the vegetables wrapped in banana leaves and simply liked the idea. So I took a few pictures and posted them online, he said.

With more than 3.5 million views and over 17 thousand shares, the idea became something people can encourage more supermarkets to implement (实施).

Some have noticed that not everything on the shelves is completely plastic-free to which the supermarket responded that they are taking one step at a time, but it's not that easy. Many products come to the supermarkets pre-packaged and many companies are interested in wrapping their produce in plastic since it is the cheapest and the easiest option.

It's now up to the shoppers to show the supermarket which they prefer. If everyone opts for the banana leaf packaging, they will probably stop stocking the items in plastic.

【1】What can we infer about recycling from Para. 1?

A.The author thinks highly of recycling.

B.The US did a great job in recycling in 2013.

C.Recycling has failed to solve the plastic problem.

D.Recycling helps a lot in reducing plastic consumption.

【2】Why did the man go to Rimping Supermarket?

    A.To purchase some items.

B.To look for new ideas there.

C.To take photos of their shelves.

    D.To sign a contract with a lawyer.

【3】Which might be one of the influential factors in encouraging leaf packaging?

    A.The Internet.

    B.The companies’ interest.

    C.The contract.

    D.The plastic-free shelves.

【4】According to the passage, we can learn that ________.

A.people tend to prefer farm produce wrapped in plastic

B.promoting leaf packaging requires people’s joint effort

C.China used to export part of its waste to other Countries

D.it's easy for supermarkets to change the way of packaging

  • 23、They had a dozen children, six boys and six girls, in seventeen years. One reason Dad had so many children was that he was confident anything he and Mother teamed upon was sure to be a success.

Our house at Montclair, New Jersey, was a sort of school for scientific management and the removal of wasted motions — or “motion study,” as Dad and Mother named it.

Dad took moving pictures of us children washing dishes, so that he could determine how we could reduce our motions and thus hurry through the task. Each child who wanted extra pocket money put forward an offer saying what he would do the job for. The lowest bidder got the contract(合约).

Dad put process and work charts in the bathrooms. Every child old enough to write — and Dad expected his children to start writing at a young age — was required to sign their names on the charts in the morning after he had brushed his teeth, taken a bath, combed his hair, and made his bed. At night, each child had to weigh himself, mark the figure on a graph, and sign the process charts again after he had done his homework, washed his hands and face, and brushed his teeth. Mother wanted to have a place on the charts for saying prayers, but Dad said as far as he was concerned prayers were voluntary.

It was strict management, all right. Yes, at home or on the job, Dad was always the efficiency expert. He buttoned his vest from the bottom up, instead of from the top down, because the bottom-to-top process took him only three seconds, while the top-to-bottom took seven. He even used two shaving brushes to make his face smooth enough, because he found that by so doing he could cut seventeen seconds off his shaving time. For a while he tried shaving with two razors, but he finally gave that up.

“I can save forty-four seconds,” he complained, “but I wasted two minutes this morning putting this bandage on my throat.” It wasn’t the injured throat that really bothered him. It was the two minutes.

1Why was the author’s house considered a sort of school?

    A. It had a team of twelve children there.

    B. The children were taught how to work well in it.

    C. The parents could teach their children better at home.

    D. The parents could have the children’s daily activities recorded.

2What is the purpose of signing the charts?

    A. To help to do things efficiently.   B. To manage the big family effectively.

    C. To look after the children better.   D. To remind the children to obey the rules.

3What did the father complain about one morning?

    A. He should have given up shaving.   B. His bleeding throat bothered him.

    C. He couldn’t shave with two razors.   D. He failed to cut short his shaving time.

4We can we infer from the text?

    A. The kids had to bid for everything they wanted.

    B. The author took pride in his father’s management.

    C. The couple were always troubled by their children.

    D. The father’s work was to teach the children at home.

  • 24、With so many different kinds of plants out there, telling them apart can seem like an impossible task. But you don’t have to have a degree in botany to start putting names to the plants you come across. Learning to recognize various species begins with studying the plants’ unique physical features carefully and recording what you see.

【1】 If you spot a plant outdoors and don’t have the first clue as to what it is, start identifying it by scanning your surroundings. In particular, consider the overall climate, the conditions of the terrain, and any nearby water sources. A quick glance should be able to tell you what you’re looking at.

Study the plant’s features carefully. Whenever you come across a species you’ve never seen before, stop and take note. Look over each of the individual parts, like the stems (茎,梗), leaves, and flowers.

    【2】

Use viewing aids to take a closer look. A magnifying glass will allow you to zoom in and analyze a plant’s features in more vivid detail. Similarly, you may require a pair of binoculars or a telescopic lens when you want to inspect a particular specimen (样本) from a distance. 【3】

Write down the plant’s key features. 【4】 Be sure to make mention of attributes like size, shape, color, and texture, as well as any unique patterns or other distinguishing marks. In order to learn to identify plants on your own, you’ll need to hone (磨练) your use of descriptive language to be as precise as possible.

Ask an expert to take advantage of their firsthand experience. Show your notes and any photos you’ve taken to a botanist, gardening specialist, or respected outdoorsman and see if they can help you discover the identity of a certain plant. 【5】 People who have spent years studying plants can often pick them out by sight or description.

A.Observe the plant carefully at first.

    B.Take your environment into consideration.

C.Record each characteristic in your own words.

D.Judge the age and shape of the plants you have found.

E.Without these tools, you’ll be stuck doing a lot of guesswork.

F.You’ll have an opportunity to absorb a little of what they know.

G.Most plants can be grouped and distinguished by these structures.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

High school exit tests are tests that students must pass to graduate from high school. In the last few years. however, a number of states in America have dropped them. Although some states still use them for diplomas, the number is down from a high of 27 states during the testing craze promoted by No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

The appearance of this phenomenon is small wonder. Researches clearly show that exit tests have little positive effects on students. A 2014 report found exit testing was associated with lower graduation rates, negatively affected labor market outcomes, and, most alarmingly, produced a 12.5 percent increase in incarceration( 监禁)rates. Exit exams, the study concluded, had tended to add little value for most students.

Exit testing relies on the following assumptions. One is that standardized testing can serve as a kind of “quality control”for high school graduates, guaranteeing that graduates are college ready. The other is that they have predicting value for future success in academic situations.

But there is little evidence. The tests don't exactly measure what they pretend to measure. For example, qualities such as intelligence, academic ability, college readiness are not determined. Those that should be developed in all young people, like responsibility, critical thinking, and empathy (移植),are not measured, either.Even supporters of exit tests have acknowledged that they don't offer reliable data.

Thus, more and more people are suggesting that exit test scores ought to be just one component of the high school diploma. Schools should consider many other records including credits earned, courses taken, activities, service, projects and other elements of academic accomplishment so that students can be evaluated flexibly. In other words, exit test scores should never be the only criterion for high school diplomas.
