22、English is the international language of science, but most of the world's scientists speak it as a second language. We shoulder an extra career challenge: Not only must we gain a command of science, but we must also be able to write in a foreign language to communicate that science.
My mother tongue is Hebrew. Fm now a researcher at Monash University. There are six people on my research team, five of whom are non-native English speakers. Writing highly technical English is crucial to our science. Our topics embrace cell biology, materials science and chemistry, so our writings must make sense to both non-experts and experts.
To be frank, English is suitable as an international language in a number of ways. On the surface, it’s easy enough to convey basic meanings when conducting trade, business and tourism, as well as on social media. In most contexts, it doesn't matter if you misuse “the” or "-ing,” or get the word order wrong. Although the spelling is chaotic, once you get a feel for the typical patterns, it’s not too hard.
However, when meanings are complex and technical, precision is a must. Then, English becomes a difficult beast to wrestle with.
The Australian poet Clive James once called English“big and baggy." I can't disagree. The vocabulary is large. Furthermore, the grammar is extraordinarily flexible, leaving us often confusing. There lies the problem: Such rich language makes it easy to produce long writings of questionable quality.
Worse still, we outsiders ta English are likely to have been taught to use complicated wording and long sentences to show our authority on a topic. However, English is the opposite: The language is at its most elegant when plain and simple. But simplicity is hard in English!
Another shock to me was the importance English speakers place on front-ending their messages. In many languages, you might expect readers to stay with the text throughout. In English, however, I’ve developed healthy fear that my readers will skim-read unless I state the essence at the opening of a paragraph, then walk backwards while explaining it.
【1】Why is English suitable as an international language?
A.It can be easily used to get basic meanings across.
B.It has relatively simple grammar and spelling rules.
C.It is spoken by the majority of the world’s population.
D.Its huge vocabulary helps express complex meanings.
【2】The challenge scientists have as non-native speakers is ___________.
A.how to convey complex and technical meanings precisely in English
B.how to produce professional writings in complicated English
C.how to establish their authority in the field of science in English writing.
D.how to make scientific writings in English accessible to authorities.
【3】What does the underlined phrase “front-ending their messages” in Paragraph 7 refer to?
A.skimming for the main idea of the text
B.expressing ideas at the end of the text
C.presenting key messages at the beginning
D.having a thorough understanding of the text
23、Bruce is a manager who had a team of around 40 people. Most of them were bright, enthusiastic, and hardworking young fellows. This helps to promote their independence. 【1】 But as a team, they are not so good, which is crucial for the organization.
【2】He invited everyone to a hall for a game consisting of 3 rounds. For the first round, he told everyone to blow a balloon kept on the table and then write their name on it without bursting it, and each of them did it. Then they took a break outside for the second round. Soon after he called them back in, with more balloons scattered around without names on them. He declared that they had 15 minutes to find the balloon with their name written on it. 【3】
For the next round, Bruce told them if any team member found a balloon with a name on it, he or she had to give it to the owner of the name. All started searching, and within a couple of minutes everyone had their own balloon with their name on it. Bruce went to the dais and said, “You see, in the second round, no one was able to find their balloons as they were working on individual targets. But in the final round. within a couple of minutes, everyone had the balloon with them. 【4】”
Most of the time, people hide information, avoid collaboration, and distance themselves from their team members.【5】And it also, in the long run, affects the individual. So, everyone in the team should share and work effectively for greater ambition for the team.
A.Consequently, no one got their balloons.
B.However, he found he was not successful.
C.That’s the power of teamwork and sharing.
D.So he considered taking his group on a trip.
E.Individually, everyone on the team is outstanding.
F.This sort of mindset forms obstacles for team growth.
G.He decided to address the issue by launching a team activity.
24、 Let’s begin with the story: King Hiero contracts the ancient Greek polymath Archimedes (阿基米德) to detect fraud in the manufacture of a golden crown. Archimedes accepts the challenge and, during a subsequent trip to the public baths, realizes that the more his body sinks into the water, the more water is displaced — making the displaced water an exact measure of his volume.
Realizing he has hit upon a method to determine whether the King’s crown was made of gold or silver, the young Greek leaps out of the bath and rushes home naked crying “Eureka! Eureka!” Or, translated: “I’ve found it! I’ve found it!”
Too bad, however, Archimedes probably never uttered the phrase in that way.
First and foremost, Archimedes himself never wrote about this episode, although he spent plenty of time detailing the laws of buoyancy (浮力). The oldest authority for the naked-Archimedes eureka story is Vitruvius, a Roman writer, who included the tale in his introduction to his ninth book of architecture. “Vitruvius may have gotten it wrong,” says Chris Schmitt, a mathematician at the University of Berlin and a self-described Archimedes fan. “The method attributed to Archimedes in the story works in theory so it sounds right, but when you actually try it, you find that the real world gets in the way.”
In fact, Schmitt is one of a long line of scientists, including Galileo, who have read the account and thought, “That can’t be right.” As Galileo wrote, Archimedes could have achieved a far more precise result using his own law of buoyancy and an accurate scale. In fact, the surface tension of water can make the volume of a light object like a crown immeasurable. “There may be some truth to it,” Schmitt adds. “Archimedes did measure the volume of things but the eureka moment was maybe due to his original discovery concerning buoyance, not to sitting in the bathtub and then running through the streets naked.”
Much like Newton’s apple, the exclamation persists because of the enduring power of the story: a golden crown, a life in the balance, a naked mathematician. The suspect foundations of the eureka moment take nothing away from the word’s ability to uniquely and concisely convey the flash of inspiration.
【1】According to the first paragraph, how would Archimedes measure the volume of the crown?
A.He would weigh himself with and without the crown.
B.He would weigh the crown first and then put it into water.
C.He would go to the public baths wearing the crown on his head.
D.He would sink the crown into water and measure the water displaced.
【2】What did Galileo probably think of the naked-Archimedes eureka story?
A.He believed the word “eureka” was said in another situation.
B.He suspected Archimedes didn’t run through the street naked.
C.He doubted Archimedes carried out the experiment independently.
D.He thought Archimedes would not have used the method described.
【3】What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A.The word “eureka” is still widely used today.
B.The word “eureka” is now a formal scientific term.
C.Most people accept the authenticity of the original story.
D.People are still inspired by the achievements of Archimedes.
【4】What is the purpose of this text?
A.To introduce the famous scientist Archimedes.
B.To examine the credibility of the eureka story.
C.To explain how the word “eureka” was created.
D.To urge people not to use the word “eureka” anymore.
