21、Read the following two blogs and answer the questions that follow.
Our buses drive me to distraction
I’ve had it up to here with buses! To be more precise, I am sick to death of the service offered by our local bus company and which dares to call itself Reliabus—a misnomer if ever there was one, since its exhaust-fume-coughing, atmosphere-choking buses are anything but reliable. Nine times out of ten they arrive late, and when they do eventually turn up, there’s no guarantee you’ll get on. I’ve lost count of the times I have watched as a full-to-bursting number 26—which I try to catch home from college—sails past the bus stop (another misnomer), leaving weary travellers like myself to wait for at least another 20 minutes until the next one comes along. Unless of course that’s full as well, in which case we have to wait even longer. Why don’t they lay on more buses!
It annoys me to think that they are turning people away from travelling by public transport, encouraging them to use their cars and causing traffic jams in our already heavily congested town centre. I wrote them an email and gave them a piece of my mind. If you’re as fed up as I am, why not do the same? They might just sit up and take notice.
Leave me alone!
If there’s one thing that gets on my nerves, it’s people who keep trying to sell me things I don’t want. It drives me mad when I’m in the middle of my dinner or watching a film and some smooth-talking idiot phones up and asks me if I’m interested in new kitchen units, a subscription to a book club or a superfast internet connection. No, I’m not, thank you very much, and if I was, I’d get in touch with you! I very nearly burnt the house down the other day answering one of their ridiculous calls. I forgot I’d left something frying in the kitchen—just got back to the blackened remains in time.
It’s even worse outside of the home—sometimes you can’t move for people handing out fliers in the street, advertising computer classes or urging you to buy this, that or the other. They push one into your face, and if you don’t take it, they give you a nasty look and you can hear them swearing and muttering under their breath about you as you walk away. Not nice at all.
【1】Both the two blogs are meant to .
A.address a problem
B.ask for sympathy
C.make a complaint
D.clarify a misunderstanding
【2】By “another misnomer” (paragraph 1), the blogger actually means .
A.the bus seldom stops there
B.20 minutes’ wait is too long
C.she is often too late to catch the bus
D.public transport is not a good choice
【3】What annoys the blogger according to the second blog?
A.The bad quality of kitchen appliances.
B.The endless phone calls to sell something.
C.The terrible experiences of cooking for the family.
D.The attitudes that her colleagues have towards her.
22、 The annoying persons walking down the street with their heads buried in their cellphones—sometimes you could be one of them—are not just slowing themselves down. They are also damaging other people's ability to move quickly and efficiently(有效地), according to a new study.
Like flocks of birds or schools of fish, human crowds self-organize to move safely and efficiently. But such efficiency is only possible when people can anticipate others' moves so that they can adjust their own movements accordingly.
To test how a phone tapper might mess with this flow, scientists set up a straight passage on a closed-off street for two groups of 27 pedestrians to walk down in opposite directions. They tracked each person's path of travel, measured how fast these walkers were moving, and calculated the groups' order parameter, which measures where and when straight lanes(路线) formed. The researchers also tasked three participants in one group with typing on their phones as they walked, and ran three different experimental conditions where the participants using cellphones were in front, middle or back of their walking group.
Such is what happened with the inattentive individuals in front: Lanes both behind and opposite them developed slowly and—when compared with the middle and back positions—several seconds later than they would have if all pedestrians were alert(警觉的).
As expected, phone users had trouble making predictions about the movements of others because they couldn't see the crowd around them. But the researchers also found that alert pedestrians, especially those moving toward cellphone users, had to make sharp turns or step out of the way to avoid collisions. The volunteers were also unable to tell the moves of the inattentive walkers in advance, even though they could devote their full attention to the paths in front of them.

23、Danny Smith worked for a celebrated firm and he had an affectionate family. Danny’s parents regarded themselves to be the luckiest, to be blessed with such an amazing child. But on the other hand, Danny was not happy with himself, since he thought himself to be an ugly, unconfident and unattractive person.
One evening, while returning home from work, he, along with many people, was waiting for the bus. On arrival of the bus, Danny somehow made his way into the bus and managed to find a seat.
After sitting, he looked around the bus and noticed a handsome and charming man sitting opposite him. On looking towards the man, Danny became discouraged once again regarding his looks and personality. All types of bad thoughts started coming in his mind that he was not worth this beautiful world. He thought that lucky man, with such a beautiful and attractive face, must always be the center of attraction.
Danny became jealous of that man and could not bear him in front of him. So he changed his seat to avoid him. On the way all the negative feelings kept coming to his mind, imagining how his life would have been only if he were more handsome and good looking.
Finally on reaching the destination he came out of the bus. As he was walking, a person suddenly pushed Danny from back. Danny angrily turned around and what he saw brought tears in Danny’s eyes.
The same “fortunate” man he had been envying all his way had difficulty in walking, since his one leg was shorter than the other. The “fortunate,’ man apologized to Danny, but Danny couldn’t say a word and walked away with tears in his eyes and guilt in his heart.
While walking, he realized that we must be satisfied with what we are and even the basic qualities that we have might be a dream to someone else. So we should be grateful for what we possess.
【1】What made Danny feel unsatisfied?
A.His expectation.
B.His career.
C.His appearance.

D.Because he envied the man’s looks.

24、Part of buying a home is making it your own. That can mean a huge number of things, from the simple act of repainting to something more adventurous, like adopting a brand-new lifestyle.
For the Wright family —Yvonna, Brett and their two daughters, Marley and Lola — creating a home of their own meant stepping outside their New York City comfort zone. It was a major shift, but they found a whole new level of contentment not too far from where they started. Now, the Wrights are raising chickens, keeping bees and planning a future as a farmhouse family in the Hudson Valley, just north of Manhattan.
As longtime residents of Harlem, Brett and Yvonna Wright didn’t always consider farm life their destiny(命运). But after finding success in the worlds of entertainment and publishing, they felt the need to build something their whole family could own for years to come. The brownstones of Harlem were difficult to leave behind, but the promise of open space, fresh air and boundless nature was too charming (迷人的) to resist.
The Wrights’ journey to homeownership wasn’t without obstacles. Their daughters were understandably a bit skeptical about moving. It can be difficult to have your life uprooted at any age, and for city kids moving to the country, the culture shock includes adapting to a whole new lifestyle.
Since buying their home, farm life has suited the Wrights even better than they had hoped. The charms of county life won over their daughters more quickly than anyone could have expected. Now, they are helping Mom and Dad with their business, Lomar Farms. It might seem like a total reinvention, but this family is well equipped to create a life as sweet as honey.
【1】What can we say about the farmhouse of the Wright family?
A.It is located in Harlem.
B.It was owned by a relative.
C.It used to be a publishing house.
D.It is not too far from their old home.

B.It is kind of adventurous.
C.It is out of their comfort zone.
D.It is a shock to their neighbors.
